George Takei can’t show you Sharp’s fourth pixel, can still blow your mind

We’ve seen our fair share of thin HDTVs — and pressed iPhones against them for comparison — so it’s no big deal when Sharp swivels its latest edge lit LED creation and shows off its 1.6-inch depth, but George Takei’s “Oh My” reaction is priceless. We were in the house for Sharp’s unveiling of its quad-pixel technology (now called Quattron) and weren’t sure we got the difference, so there’s no doubt they needed an extra something to show viewers why they should care (embedded after the break in case you didn’t spot it during the NCAA Tournament) since your display just isn’t ready for constant loops of sunflowers, saxophones and repeat playback of Oh Yeah via the USB media port.

Dell joins dog pile, sues five LCD makers over price-fixing allegations

Looks like Dell is getting itself a membership in a club of which AT&T, Nokia, and the US Department of Justice are none too pleased to say they’re members. The company has filed suit in a San Francisco court today against four Japanese LCD makers – Sharp, Hitachi, Toshiba, and Seiko Epson – and Taiwan-based HannStar. The crime at hand? None other than the much-chronicled LCD price fixing cartel. At least two of the aforementioned companies (Sharp and Hitachi) have already come forth to admit involvement and pay fines elsewhere, and now it looks like the troubles are still coming for them and others. If only there was some way the companies could band together to increase profits and help pay for these suits… oh, wait.

Leak: Microsoft Pink phones coming to Verizon, on shelves April 20th?

Details on Microsoft’s Pink phones seem to be leaking all over the place this week, and we just got a huge piece of the puzzle: an extremely reliable source just told us the two Sharp-made devices will launch exclusively on Verizon, with a possible street date of April 20th. We’ve also got two more photos of the Pure and Turtle — which are legit, as far as we can tell — and some info on the Pink ad campaign, which will indeed be targeted at teens and twentysomethings and centered around that “truly madly deeply” line Microsoft employees have been tossing around lately. (Sort of explains that 4/20 launch date, right?) Whether any of this is good enough to overcome the fact that Pink seems to be a limited featurephone platform launching into a world of cheap smartphones remains to be seen, but this thing is definitely happening. New pic of the Turtle after the break.

Update: We’ve just heard that Pink will be coming to Vodafone internationally as well — which explains why we’ve heard of both CDMA and GSM variants of the two devices.

Sharp PB20ZU gets FCC approval — is this ‘Pure’ from Microsoft’s Project Pink?

The puzzle pieces are all fitting together now, aren’t they? Just a few days after regulatory passage of the PB10ZU from Sharp — a device that could very well be the pebble-shaped Turtle — we’re now seeing a separate filing for the PB20ZU. The label document isn’t terribly detailed here, but if you squint your eyes, you can definitely see how this lines up perfectly with the concept of a landscape QWERTY slider which is exactly what Project Pink’s rumored second phone, the Pure, is expected to be. Despite Microsoft’s blowout announcement at MWC earlier this month, there was nary a mention of Pink or the Danger-influenced hardware and software said to surround it, so we’re expecting to see this stuff soon — especially now that we’ve got FCC certification under our belts. CTIA, perhaps? Notably, this phone rocks CDMA with Bluetooth and WiFi, so if it sees duty on an American carrier — which it almost certainly will — it’s gotta be either Verizon or Sprint. Stay tuned.

Sharp crams digiframe into JD-4C1CL/CW telephone

Face it, kids — it’s tough to make a landline telephone hip in the age of cellular telephony, but somehow or another Sharp has managed to do just that. For the second time in a year, no less. The new JD-4C1CL/CW is a rather typical cordless phone, but the super-dee-duper docking station has a 4.3-inch digital photo frame and 64MB of internal storage space. Beyond that, most everything else is under wraps, but we’re told that it’ll ship in brown, red and white this April for an undisclosed amount.

Microsoft’s PB10ZU (turtle) and PB20ZU Project Pink phones outed by FCC?

Oops. Those two pics looks similar, eh? And if we’re not mistaken, Microsoft’s Pink phone is rumored to be made by Sharp. This wirerame for model PB10ZU just hit the FCC looking every bit the “Turtle” device that was leaked last year. Of course, seeing Sharp behind Pink is only natural since it was one of Danger’s manufacturers of choice for the Sidekick — a team wholly ingested by Microsoft a few years ago. Looking through the FCC docs we see that it’s a slider with dual-band CDMA, EVDO Rev. A, Bluetooth, and 802.11b/g WiFi. We also see reference to a second model, the PB20ZU (aka, “pure“?), although that model is lacking any detail whatsoever. The tastiest of FCC docs are being withheld by request until March 29th — right in line with a rumored spring launch. Hopefully Microsoft will have more to say about Project Pink and Windows 7 devices here in Barcelona so stay tuned.

[Thanks, Jeremy F.]

Sharp debuts 60-inch 240Hz Aquos LED LCD TV, 68-inch set with a touch of yellow in its RGB

Like the steady hand on your wristwatch, Sharp is arriving at CES with a handful of new television sets… so let’s get on with the show! This year, the Aquos LED LCD TV series is touting an impressive 1.6-inch thin frame, Energy Start Version 4 compliancy, and “four primary color technology” — in a nutshell, it’s a “RGB-meet-Y for yellow” world. The LE920 flagship series comes in 52, 60, and 68-inch models with Aquomotion 240 and edge-lit LED; those are due in May with prices listed firmly as TBD. The LE820/810 series hits the slightly tinier, 60, 52, 46, and 40-inch screen size markets and boasts 120Hz frame rate conversion and 4ms response time. They’re slightly more within your reach, debuting in March with prices ranging between $1,800 and $4,000. Looking for something even faster? Meet the 60-inch E88UN with a 240Hz refresh rate alongside a X-Gen panel — mum’s the word on pricing, but it’ll be the first of these out, in February. Presser after the break.

Sharp’s BD-HP70U Blu-ray player adds a little red with Netflix support

Two new Blu-ray players straight from the brightly-lit, cemented halls of Sharp HQ. The BD-HP70U outputs at 1080p at 24 frames per second and boasts Wireless LAN with Netflix support (always a selling point). The BD-HP24U doesn’t boast online love, but both do feature Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio support. The latter is coming first quarter for $280, the former in Q2 for $500. We don’t have a picture of the player just yet, but really it’s not gonna be the casing that sets your heart aflame here, right? Press release is after the break.

Live from Sharp’s CES press event

It’s CES week and that means the press conferences never stop, with Sharp the next up to flaunt its wares for the coming year. Last year the company ducked the Widget onslaught and continued its own AquosNet path, we’ll see what 2010 has in store.

VUDU coming to Sharp, Toshiba and VIZIO, adds tons of new apps

VUDU Apps

The folks over at VUDU have been very busy apparently, not only have deals been struck to get VUDU onto new Sharp, Sanyo, Toshiba, and VIZIO HDTVs and Blu-ray players, but there are also 100 new apps for select models — TV manufactures like LG can decide not to support the Apps even though the VUDU movie streaming is supported. The list is pretty extensive, but many of the names look iffy — more like show names than apps — so we’ll hold back on judgement until after we’ve gotten a chance to try them first hand. There are some that piqued our interest though; like Twitter, Facebook and Weather. Check out the entire list for yourself after the break.
