Hasta La Gadget!

C’mon now, don’t act all surprised. This one followed the picture perfect path to shipping: announcement, hands-on, a stop by the FCC’s database and now, a formal portal in Creative’s webstore. If the Galaxy Tab, eLocity A7, G Tablet and Advent Vega haven’t exactly tickled your fancy, there’s hardly a chance the 7-inch ZiiO will have what it takes. That said, it’s now up for grabs at $249.99, with that sum getting you 8GB of storage ($20 more doubles it to 16GB), an 800×400 resolution display, Android 2.1, a ZiiLABS ZMS-08 HD processor, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a front-facing VGA camera. Unfortunately, this thing has a zero percent chance of revolutionizing your life in the way that the ZiiEagle already has, but perhaps it’ll bring you joy in some smaller, less meaningful way.

The Advent Vega was never the most polished Android tablet in the world — after all, we had to rely on a custom ROM just to get native Android Market access — but a reasonable price tag and NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 has still made it hard to resist. For those who’ve managed to snag one already, you may have noticed that the Flash playback isn’t exactly… awesome. That’s probably because the version loaded onto already-shipped versions isn’t certified by Adobe, and in order to fend off future complaints, the company’s yanking Flash Player entirely from newly-shipping models for the time being. The certification process is apparently underway, and the outfit expects Vega tablets shipped “in the early part of 2011” to have a green-lit build pre-installed; as for everyone else, they’ll be provided a gratis update as soon as it can be pushed out onto the interwebs. Do you “have enterprise sales experience and an existing knowledge of the mobile market and the technologies that support it?” Do you “have strong IT knowledge in the areas of enterprise messaging and collaboration, VPN, WiFi and enterprise security technologies?” And most importantly, do you “possess the ability to work without direct supervision or detailed direction?” If so, you might just be suitable for Apple’s latest and greatest job listing. The HR team in Cupertino is apparently looking for a Verizon iPad system engineer, primarily to work with Apple’s sales team and legions of business partners in order to “drive the adoption of iPad in enterprise accounts.” What’s interesting is the Verizon angle; if Apple simply wanted nondescript iPads in Corporate America, why hire someone familiar with Big Red? Moreover, this certainly says something about Apple’s relationship with Verizon — namely, that it’s growing, and we’re guessing that the pleasantries will eventually extend far beyond a tablet. So yeah, it’s no real shocker that Apple and Verizon are in cahoots on some level, but this kind of invitation usually comes with one or two undercover intentions. Any upstanding gentleman attached to his better half would understand.

How big is the Notion Ink Adam‘s screen? Well, it depends on what time you looked at the company’s site today. If you were one of the unlucky folks who saw the image titled “preordernow.jpg,” the screen’s a tiny bit smaller and the bezel a tad larger than it is for all the fortunate peeps pre-ordering from the “preordernow1.jpg” pic that’s currently gracing the site. Now’s your chance, guys — go grab yourself the truly magical and revolutionary tablet whose specs change with the wave of a Photoshop airbrush.

Update: To be clear, we don’t know which of the two ‘shops is the real deal — technically, neither is, they’re both renders — but earlier prototypes have shown some pretty slinky bezels. It’ll be on Notion Ink to demonstrate just how slim the Adam’s screen surround is when it finally unveils the real deal.

So what if the Libretto exited the common consciousness almost as quickly as it entered it while the Folio 100 was bad enough to get its major UK retailer to discontinue it? Toshiba promised it’d have a family of tablets for us by the end of 2011’s first quarter and the plan apparently hasn’t changed. DigiTimes is reporting today that three new Toshiba slates are set for their debut at CES in a month’s time, two of them equipped with 10.1-inch screens and a third sized at 11.6 inches. Microsoft’s Windows 7 and Google’s Chrome OS and Android will each be responsible for providing the operating environment on one of these new tablets, indicating that Toshiba — much like the rest of the world — has yet to make up its mind about what the best tablet OS out there is. We should know more in just a few short weeks.
