Nokia’s flagship N97 gets its own website, pre-order link ($699)

If flash animations and S60 5th edition are your idea of a good time then you’ll want to head on over to Nokia’s new interactive N97 landing page. From there you can get as close as you’ll ever get to Nokia’s flagship slider with 3.5-inch, 640 x 360 pixel resistive touch-screen display prior to its expected June launch. So go ahead, take ‘er for a spin and then hit the newly live pre-order button after you’re convinced that this is the smartphone for you. Sure, there’s lots of potential June competition out there but take heart: the Android-powered Samsung i7500 lacks a QWERTY, there’s no guarantee that a next-gen iPhone will launch in June, and the Palm Pre might be a big fat dud. There, feel better about your choice?

Update: Tipster Chris just let us know that the N97 shows a $699 phone-only price on the “find products” tab over at Nokia USA. That’s $6 cheaper than the N96, strangely enough. See screen-grab after the break.

Update 2: Pre-order is go for the US.

Sony Ericsson CS8 passes FCC, looking T-Mobile bound

If you were looking for a C905 with just a little dash of AWS 3G thrown in, look no further than this little gem. The so-called CS8 breaks from Sony Ericsson’s traditional model naming convention, but they could call this thing the Behold 2 if they wanted to — all we care is that we’re getting access to an 8.1 megapixel slider with myFaves (you can clearly see the myFaves logo plastered on the back of the user manual’s diagrams, and yes, it’s that important). It also sports Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and our undying love and affection, so we hope to see you soon, dearest Cyber-shot.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXCIX: NokiPhone N3000i dual slider is one part N95, two parts iPhone, and six parts win

Combining two pretty great ideas in a way that is all kinds of illegal in the US, the China-produced NokiPhone N3000i looks to be a pretty straightforward iPhone ripoff with bonus N95-esque dual slider capabilities. The GSM smartphone’s got 3.2-inch QVGA screen, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, dual SIM support, microSD slot, and video recording capabilities. Price of admission is $129 right now, which according to chinagrabber is a hefty discount from its $400 MSRP. Your move, NOKLA.

Samsung Impression now on sale at AT&T

If you were waiting for a big-ass OLED display before pulling the trigger on a new North American handset, go ahead and get your wallet (or coin purse, or piggy bank, whatever) ready. The Samsung Impression has now officially launched on AT&T, bringing HSDPA, microSD expansion, landscape sliding QWERTY keyboard, and a 3 megapixel camera — but the headlining feature clearly has to be that gorgeous 3.2-inch AMOLED screen clocking in at 400 x 240 resolution. $199.99 on contract after rebate makes it yours, if you think you can really handle everyone within a 50-foot radius being dazzled every time you turn it on.

LG’s GD900 with (multi-touch?) transparent keypad gets S-Class UI

The recent glut of telephony news can mean only one thing: CTIA Wireless 2009 is getting ready to kick off in Vegas baby, Las Vegas. In the runup we have LG upping the hype on its 13.4mm-thick GD900 handset first outed in Barcelona at February’s MWC show. This time, however, the 7.2Mbps HSDPA slider with world’s first transparent glass (not plastic as originally assumed) keypad will be functional, running LG’s new S-Class UI on the 3-inch display. We know that the GD900 features vibrational haptic feedback and that the transparent keypad seems to double as a touch-sensitive mouse pad (like that on your laptop) when surfing the internet or navigating the UI — it also seems to support gestures like writing “M” to launch the MP3 music player and multi-touch such as pinch to zoom on photographs. The GD900 will launch in Europe and Asia sometime in May. No US release announced so we’ll have to make the most of our time with it this week in order to clear up all the mysteries presented by the Korean press release. One more pic showing an apparent finger-swipe rotating the UI after the break.

LG Xenon appears in semi-unflattering photoshoot

LG’s Xenon has just shown up over at Smartphone Nation in an impromptu photoshoot, and it’s not looking too bad. There’s nothing out of the ordinary here — slideout QWERTY keyboard, resistive touchscreen, 2 megapixel camera — you get the idea, right? Seems to be expected on or around the month of April on AT&T, and we hear it will come in three colors — red, black and something else — and that it’ll run somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 after a mail in rebate. Of course, none of that’s official yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we? One more shot after the break, hit the read link for the whole set.

AT&T-bound Samsung SGH-a877 gets detailed further

We already had plenty of reason to believe that Samsung’s QWERTY-packin’, landscape-layin’ SGH-a877 was headed to AT&T, but now it’s pretty much a lock. phonescoop has dug up a few more pertinent details about the so-called Impression, confirming the 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen and adding that the handset will include an accelerometer and built-in Bluetooth. If this one has your eye, we’d wager that it won’t be long before it goes on sale for real — maybe all’s that is left is a formal CTIA unveiling?

Nokia introducing 5030, 5330, and 5730 XpressMusics at tomorrow’s event?

We know that the shindig Nokia’s putting on tomorrow has something to do with music, so it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that we’d see some new XpressMusic handsets there, and indeed, All About Phones seems to have scooped the goods. It looks like we’ll be treated to no fewer than three models — all Xpress-branded, naturally — starting on the low end with the 5030 candybar. This one eschews XpressMusic for the less audiophile-sounding “XpressRadio” name, pimping its in-built FM radio support and a large, squarish speaker around back at a crazy low price of €40 ($51) unsubsidized. Moving one rung up the range is the 5330 XpressMusic slider, packing a 3.5mm jack, some sort of special light effects for the ravers in the audience, and 24 hours of listening time; it’ll be available in the third quarter for €160 ($204). Finally, we have the rumored 5730 (pictured) — the only of the three to run S60 and lay claim to a genuine smartphone title. This one follows in the E75’s footsteps by packing both a numeric and a landscape QWERTY slide, WiFi, a 3.2 megapixel cam, HSDPA, and GPS, but the most interesting new feature here might be the “Xpress Home Screen” which exposes your loaded media right from the phone’s — you guessed it — home screen. This one should hit in the second quarter for €280 ($357) and will be offered in a Comes With Music version in some countries. How’s about killing off DRM while you’re at it, Nokia?

Update: iDNES.cz points out that the 5030 has already been on sale in Pakistan since November, so it’s conceivable that Nokia will be using the event to present the low-end phone to a broader audience — or that it won’t be shown at all.

Samsung A877 with AMOLED touchscreen coming to AT&T this month?

Are we looking at the best thing this side of a smartphone to grace AT&T? Quite possibly, and jilted Quickfire owners who miss the form factor should probably be taking note. Rumor has it that we’re looking at the Samsung A877 here, delivering some 3.2 inches of AMOLED glory at WQVGA resolution, a 3 megapixel cam with geotagging support, TouchWiz (naturally), GPS, HSDPA, and a landscape slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Even better, PhoneDog’s tipster says it’ll be hitting just a couple weeks away on March 29, so we don’t have terribly long to wait. The Eternity just got a whole lot less interesting, eh?

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXIX: meet the HTC A296 — and its gaping maw

We can totally picture this scenario at a bar, party, or Engadget reader meetup: “Hey, check out my Touch Diamond… oh, oh, wait, what’s this? Wha-BAM!” Out comes the numeric keypad, right out of nowhere, accompanied by a sickeningly bad S60 knockoff interface. Observers are stunned, dumbfounded; some even pass out in shock. Babies are crying, you can hear the forlorned wail of sirens in the background, and mass riots ensue. Put simply, the world was never designed to handle a fake Touch Diamond with a slide-out keypad — but you had to cross the streams, didn’t you? Jerk.

[Thanks, Jack G.]
