Flock Will Begin A New Marketing Tactic

This article was written on August 21, 2006 by CyberNet.

Flock LogoFlock is getting ready to start using word-of-mouth as a way to publicize their new browser. Sure they have already gotten a lot of recognition for their efforts but they want you to start spreading the love even more.

So how are they going to do it? Well, you see all of the Firefox buttons just about anyplace you go that say things like “Get Firefox” or “Take back the web”,  so they decided to try something like that. They just announced that you have until Tuesday 12:00PM PST to submit your vote for the top 4 slogans that you want to see on a button. Here they are:

  • Flock with me
  • Join my Flock
  • Flock n Roll
  • Flock Freely
  • I Flock
  • Flock as You Are
  • Be a Flockstar
  • Flock = Social Web
  • Mind Flock

Personally I think “Flock Freely” is the best one out of that bunch. I think they could have been a little more creative as well and maybe done something like “Flock: your web, your way”.

Opera 9.23 Released – Mum’s the Word on Opera 9.5

This article was written on August 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

Computer Repair DoctorOpera 9.23 has been released and is ready for consumption by the general public. A majority of the things fixed in this release are credited to Mozilla’s jsfunfuzz tool that was released at Black Hat about two-weeks ago. The tool found four bugs in Opera that caused crashes, and one "highly severe" security vulnerability:

  • Fixed four crash bugs found using Mozilla’s jsfunfuzz tool.
  • Fixed a stability issue with Speed Dial.
  • Fixed a critical JavaScript security issue discovered with Mozilla’s jsfunfuzz tool: "A virtual function call on an invalid pointer that may reference data crafted by the attacker can be used to execute arbitrary code."
  • Windows Vista Only: Scrolling problem with some Microsoft mice fixed.

I’m happy that Mozilla was kind enough to release the tool for everyone to use, and I’m extremely happy that people are actually using it! As I stated last time, jsfunfuzz has caught an astonishing 280 bugs in Firefox’s JavaScript engine, and more than two-thirds of those have already been fixed. Thanks to jsfunfuzz, and the creator Jesse Ruderman, the Web has just gotten a little safer.

Now I’m hoping to see test builds of Opera 9.5 soon, and from the looks of it the Opera Desktop Team isn’t taking kindly to comments regarding future versions of the browser. Almost all comments that mention Opera 9.5 are said to be off-topic, and are consequently being removed. I’m sure it is getting annoying for them when every other comment is along the lines of "can’t wait for 9.5," but that is just their community getting excited for the release. Now commenters are referring to it as "The-Build-Which-Should-Not-Be-Named," or TBWSNBN for short. ;) I understand why it is being done, but I was pretty disappointed when I saw my comment get removed as well.

So now I can’t wait to get my hands on TBWSNBN!

ZoneAlarm ForceField Offers Virtual Surfing

This article was written on September 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

ZoneAlarm ForceField Screenshots ZoneAlarm is a very well respected security company, and for the longest time it was my primary choice for firewall protection. They’ve remained pretty strong in that area, but lately I’ve seen people converting to other security apps, such as the free Comodo firewall.

ZoneAlarm is trying to recapture the focus by launching a new app that could very well be their most security-aware offering yet. It’s called ZoneAlarm ForceField and among other things it is used to place your browser in a sandbox. While in the Beta stage it is free for testers, but it will cost $29.95 when released.

What’s all this talk about virtual surfing? From the sounds of it there isn’t much of a difference between this and other free alternatives that we’ve previously mentioned: BufferZone, LivePC, and Sandboxie. It creates a virtual space on your hard drive where your downloads are stored and executed from. When run from that location programs have access to a virtual Registry and virtual system files, and therefore cannot access anything on your PC. Downloading a virus onto your computer would therefor have very limited consequences to your system, and could easily be removed.

Here are some of the other features it offers:

  • Bank & Shop security – Multiple layers of protection safeguard the information you enter online.
  • Private Browser – Surf anywhere and type anything without leaving a single trace on your computer.
  • Dangerous download detector – Frisks every file you download so you don’t get anything nasty on your computer.
  • Advanced anti-phishing, anti-keylogger and anti-screengrabber technology – Flags fraudulent Web sites and blocks spyware trying to steal your identity.

ZoneAlarm ForceField will install a toolbar in your browser so that it can actively notify you of the current site’s security. One of my favorite features, however, are the detailed notifications that you receive (pictured above, click to enlarge them). They provide information such as when the site was registered, where it is located, and whether it is a known phishing or spyware distributor. The registration date can serve a vital purpose when identifying a phishing site, because a bank that’s been around for dozens of years will probably have a website that was created more than a few months ago. :)

Right now ZoneAlarm ForceField works on 32-bit Windows XP SP2 or Vista, and is only compatible with IE 6/7 and Firefox 2. There are currently several known bugs and third-party software compatibility issues that you should be aware of before installing the free ZoneAlarm ForceField Beta.

Head over to PC World if you want to see more than a dozen screenshots of ZoneAlarm ForceField.

Thanks for the heads up “s”!

NoMute reclaims iPad orientation lock in iOS 4.2, but only if you jailbreak

If you’ve yet to upgrade your iPad to iOS 4.2.1, and you’re head-over-heels with your orientation lock, you’ve got two options: upgrade and lose that functionality altogether, or upgrade / jailbreak and get it back. Naturally, we’d recommend the latter. In what can only be described as “so typically Apple,” the software engineers at Cupertino figured that they’d convert the perfectly acceptable orientation lock switch into a mute switch. We lamented this fact in our review of the update, but rather than Apple creating (non-fiddly) alternatives within its software, we’re left to look for a solution in the jailbreaker’s app store. NoMute has just emerged under the BigBoss repository in Cydia, promising to reclaim the switch you’ve already become accustomed to using. It’s available now for absolutely nothing, but users are encouraged to cast a wicked glare in Steve’s direction as the download ensues.

Update: After installing the tweak and doing our own testing, we came one minor issue. Some apps decided to mute when the physical orientation (er, mute) switch is flicked on. So, when we played Angry Birds and physically locked the orientation, we lost sound. However, the sound remained when we locked our screen and tested videos on YouTube via Safari.

Download The New Azureus 2.5.0.0

This article was written on August 22, 2006 by CyberNet.

Azureus 2.5.0.0

The new Azureus 2.5.0.0 has finally emerged and is ready for you to download it. It has been a few months since I have seen even a minor update so this is highly welcomed. Here’s what you’ll find new in this release:

  • Send to a friend – A wizard to simplify sending a link to content to a friend or to embed in a web page (e.g. a blog).
  • Auto upload speed – This feature controls your upload speed based on the latency of your Internet connection as gauged by pinging other members of the Distributed Database.
  • OSX: Open .torrent files into Azureus via Finder/Desktop/etc.
  • ‘Do not download’ files handled more consistently with respect to download completion.
  • Renaming of a download directories.
  • Moving of data files on torrent removal from Azureus.
  • Signed updates and plug-ins for improved security.
  • Interface improvements – more information: date added, idle times, new info view, file piece view; more per-torrent options.
  • Debug information generator.

If you already have Azureus installed then you can easily upgrade by going to the Help menu and selecting “Check for Updates.” Okay, after you get it up and running you will be all set to download those torrents, you know, for the software and music that isn’t illegal. ;)

CyberNotes: Time Savings Windows Clipboard Software

This article was written on October 24, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Time Saving Tuesday

Computers would not be nearly as productive as they are if they didn’t have the copy and paste commands available to use. Think about how often you copy and paste text, files, images, and more throughout the course of your day. I do it so often that it seems like my fingers naturally rest on the Control+C keys on my keyboard.

Today I want to focus on tools that extend the functionality of the Windows Clipboard to make it easier to use and allow you to get tasks done much more quickly. Here is the software that I managed to find:

–Clippy (Homepage)–

Clippy Clippy is one of the coolest clipboard utilities that I have to present to you. It lets you perform common operations to any text that is currently located on the clipboard.

There are a ton of different things that you can have Clippy do and you will really see it shine in certain situations. This is one of those situations that we would have all liked to have this:

How often have you needed to extract text from your emails, only to find the simple, menial task to take more time than it should. You’ll have many ‘>’ characters appearing at the beginning of lines because your email has been replied to, back and forth, countless number of times. Often, you’ll also need to painstakingly reformat the text to make it appear readable.

Now with Clippy, you’ll be able to remove ‘>’ characters and reformat your text with a single click of a button.

You can add individual “tasks” for Clippy to complete or you can create your own “Clippers.” The Clippers are a group of tasks that you put together so that the program can perform multiple operations on the text with just one click. I like to think of these more like macros.

–Ditto (Homepage)–

Ditto Clipboard Ditto is a free open source program that extends the Windows Clipboard to have even more features. The number of configuration options that it has is absolutely insane but don’t let those distract you from its primary purpose: copying and pasting!

Here are a few of the great features that Ditto has:

  • Search and paste previous copy entries
  • Keep multiple computer’s clipboards in sync
  • Data is encrypted when sent over the network
  • Accessed from tray icon or global hot key
  • Select entry by double click, enter key or drag drop
  • Paste into any window that excepts standard copy/paste entries
  • Display thumbnail of copied images in list

–Auto Copy (Homepage)–

When you highlight text in a web browser it is often to copy it so that you can use it somewhere else. There is an extension for Firefox that will actually copy the text to the clipboard anytime that you highlight some text. There really isn’t much more to it than that but you may be surprised at how useful the extension is.

–Overview–

Those are the clipboard utilities that I currently use or have used in the past. They all have some unique features that can save a bunch of time and hassle if you frequently copy and paste things like I do. If you know of any other great clipboard utilities please let me know because I am always looking for things to improve the standard clipboard’s usefulness.

Opera Continues To Release Weekly Builds

Opera continues to roll out the weekly builds even after Opera 9 was released. The Opera DesktopTeam has released two weekly builds since Opera 9′s final release and they will continue to provide them to the public as they work towards Opera 9.01.

Here is a list of changes in Opera 9.01:

  • Fixed issue with setting external source viewer, now there is a separate field for parameters
  • Fixed problem with text in forms that broke when zooming
  • Fixed bug where embedding mms:URIs and rtsp:URIs directly did not work
  • Several stability fixes
  • Hotmail localization fixed
  • Save image as doesn’t put it in transfers anymore
  • Last used search engine is now remembered
  • Using namespace in widgets now works
  • Find in page with same search word on newly loaded pages now works
  • Search engines now can’t be added without a keyword
  • Newsfeeds can now be renamed

If you have noticed any of those issues then you can download and use the weekly build. Please remember that these are not final releases so there may be some stability issues, but I have always had good luck when running these weekly builds.

Boxee Box owners can be thankful for their first firmware update

Just a couple of weeks after its debut, the Boxee Box is getting its first software update today. While it might not address all the concerns raised in our review, this edition does include fixes for notable issues like 1080i playback problems, WiFi connectivity and issues handling certain audio and video files. The Boxee Blog has the full (long) list of tweaks and additions, while CEO Avner Ronen promises the company plans to release screenshots and a list of usability/UI issues still to be addressed next week. Other upgrades before 2010 runs out of time should include the Netflix and VUDU apps, so when the question of “what are you thankful for?” comes up, just say “build #1.0.1.16319,” which your Box should find automatically within 24 hours, though the impatient can prompt for an update manually.

CyberNotes: Online Unit Converters

This article was written on June 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Time Saving Tuesday

Converting from one unit of measurement to another is something that should never be difficult, and luckily there are several online unit converters that make the process drop-dead simple. They save you from having to lookup any conversion values, and often take less than a second to return an answer to you. That’s why today we’re going to outline three of our favorite websites that will do the conversion work for you.

–Unit Converter–

Unit Converter is exactly what you would expect from a conversion utility. First it breaks down the different types of measurements into 14 different categories, and from there you can enter in the starting measurement along with the type of units you’re converting between.

You’ll notice that there is no “submit” button anywhere on the site, and that’s because there’s no need for one! If you change a value in either the “from” or “to” fields it will automatically adjust the result in the other field. That’s definitely nice in the event you have to convert several different numbers.

unit converter.png

–Google–

The search engine that many of you probably use every day, Google, is also one of my favorite unit converters! Whenever you perform a regular search it will try to determine if you’re looking to convert a value. The keywords that you want to be sure to include in your conversion query is either “in” or “to,” which can be seen in these examples:

When performing a search that Google recognizes as a conversion it will show the results immediately below the search box:

google converter.png

Mac users can grab this Dashboard widget which utilizes Google Calculator to perform a conversion. Similarly Yahoo! Widget users (both Mac and Windows) can add a Google Calculator widget.

–Instacalc–

Instacalc is the online solution for performing and managing several conversions simultaneously. Much like the Google Calculator it uses a natural language system to bypass the need for excessive drop-down menus, but it takes it a step further than Google. It’s actually more like a spreadsheet because it lets you add as many rows as you want, and in each one you can get fast conversions:

instacalc.png

We actually covered this site back in October 2007 because we found the Vista Gadget which gives the same conversion power right from the sidebar of your computer. Then just a few months ago they kicked it up a notch by making a bookmarklet that works in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. For the sake of convenience I’ve copied the bookmarklet, and all you have to do is right-click on this to save it to your bookmarks:

Instacalc bookmarklet

If you want to see what the bookmarklet is capable of first just try clicking on it. You should see a small “window” open in the upper-right corner of the site where you can perform your conversion. Now how’s that for efficient?

–Overview–

Unit converters have been incredibly useful for me in the past, and Google’s method has quickly become my favorite. We’d love to hear in the comments how you go about doing your conversions!

openSuse 10.2 Alpha 4 Gets New Kickoff Menu

This article was written on September 08, 2006 by CyberNet.

Suse Kickoff Menu About three-weeks ago we got a sneak peak at the new “Start Menu” that openSuse was going to implement in their upcoming builds. The time has come for the new menu, called Kickoff, to be implemented in the openSuse 10.2 Alpha 4 release.

I’m downloading it right now because I want to see what this new menu is really like. It looks not only slick, but also very usable.

I have really gotten used to Vista’s new Start menu and the search box is the thing that I use the most. It would be horrible for me to go back to XP where I don’t have that search box.

There was already a quick demonstration of the Kickoff menu posted which shows how well thought out it is. Judging from what you have seen between Vista’s Start menu and the new Kickoff menu which one do you think is better?
