Retrieve Your Windows Vista And Office 2007 Product Keys

This article was written on September 18, 2006 by CyberNet.

Keyfinder Thing LiteLast week when Office 2007 Beta 2 TR was released there was several people who were asking how they could retrieve their Product Key. Keyfinder Thing Lite can recover your Windows or Office keys and that includes Office 2007! Both the lite and the full versions are free and there is nothing to install, just download the file and run it.

The full version of Keyfinder available has a slightly nicer interface but it requires .NET 2.0 FX to be installed. I recommend just getting the small Lite version because it is simple and quick to use.

Arduino-powered lighting system infuses your LED with some Ambilight-like pizazz (video)

Why spend your hard-earned money on one of Philips’ Ambilight displays when you can just make your own, using some Arduino-based wizardry and a little bit of elbow grease? Fortunately, Minty Boost creator ladyada is here to help. All you’ll need is a strand of digital RGB LED pixels, a five-volt DC power supply (along with a female power adapter), any USB-equipped Arduino micro-controller and, of course, the appropriate Processing programming environment. You can find the full how-to at the source link below, but the results are pretty impressive — a capture-based sketch system that’s compatible with just about any media player. See it for yourself in the video after the break.

[Thanks, Phil]

Qt developers gain NFC support with Nokia’s latest SDK update

Nokia’s development community just got its first taste of near field lovin’ with the first Qt SDK to support NFC. While you’ll be forgiven if you’re not up in arms over the latest revelation, owners of the company’s latest handsets can soon expect a greater number of useful apps that take advantage of this newfangled technology. The developer tools enable the creation of applications for both Symbian and MeeGo, and allows software authors to simulate NFC tags and create events based around them — all within the virtual environment. Programmers looking to dip their toes into the water will find a couple of experimental apps from Espoo’s pride that highlight near field communication, along with the complete source code for each. Sounds like it’s time for some to make a pot of coffee and let the coding madness ensue.

Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.8 Released

This article was written on November 07, 2006 by CyberNet.

Firefox 1.5.0.8 Mozilla just released Firefox 1.5.0.8 but it apparently does not have the built-in upgrader for users switching to Firefox 2 (I tried to do an update after the upgrade and it said no updates were available). I was expecting Mozilla to place that feature in this release so that people would be prompted to complete the upgrade to the new Firefox but they apparently decided not to do it. It is still very easy for people to upgrade because they just have to download Firefox 2 and install it. The installation process will automatically upgrade your current installation without any problems but it does take a few extra steps compared to Firefox doing it all for you.

Firefox 1.5.0.8 also has some security fixes integrated and Mozilla will continue to release security updates until April 24, 2007 for the Firefox 1.5 branch. They do recommend that you upgrade to Firefox 2 for the best security though.

If you would like to download Firefox 1.5.0.8 you can go here or just use this downloader:

I do wish that people would be prompted to upgrade to Firefox 2 just because there are a lot of people I know who never go check for updates themselves. If they see that an update is available without having to go download and install it then they would definitely be more willing to go through with it. Maybe they just haven’t initiated the major upgrades?

Microsoft Says Farewell to Bill Gates Today

This article was written on June 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

Today is the day that Bill Gates walks away from his roll at Microsoft to move on to his philanthropic work. After 30 years, his final day at the company he founded is here. Microsoft has been planning his departure for the last two years and have done various things to celebrate Gates’ time with the company. Many of you have probably already seen the video shown at CES about Gates’s last day, but we thought it was worth showing again:

Once his day is over, he’ll be spending the evening with all of his pals from Microsoft who will be celebrating his work and time at the company at a gala dinner. The three men that have already taken over his various roles include Steve Ballmer (CEO), Ray Ozzie (Chief Software Architect), and Craig Mundie (chief research and strategy officer).

So what will Bill be doing over at the Foundation? Not leading, that’s for sure. According to the Associated Press, Gates has no intention of taking on a leadership roll, instead he plans on being involved with strategy and advocacy, and helping people become aware of the problems out there.

Farewell Bill, Microsoft and the CES Keynotes will not be the same without you!

Quickly Search Through Text Files

This article was written on September 16, 2011 by CyberNet.

Text filter

arrow Windows Windows only arrow
Programs like Notepad++ are great because they provide powerful text file editing, but the searching can leave something to be desired. Text Filter is an app dedicated to searching through text files and it does a great job of it. It instantly highlights results as you type, and can optionally hide lines that don’t contain any matches.

Once you get past the fact that this is not a file editor you can start enjoying it for the things it’s good at:

  • Search as you type
Text lines are instantly filtered as you type your search phrase, with all matched terms highlighted in a contrasting color.
  • Auto suggestion for search phrase
While typing into the search box, the program lists searched phrases for you to choose from. This makes text search easier and faster.
  • Regular expressions
You can do regex searching by checking Regex Query in Search menu.
  • Multiple query modes
Besides regex query, you can also do Naive Query and Smart Query. Naive Query lets you search anywhere in the document for the entered text, while Smart Query allows for matches on word boundaries only.
  • Multiple filter modes
You can choose to hide either matched or unmatched lines for an easier text view. If you prefer viewing the entire document, make sure the option Show All Lines is checked in Search menu.

If you’re looking for a Notepad replacement you’ll have to continue your search since this can’t be used to make changes to files, but if you’re looking for more powerful ways to search through text files this is just the app you need.

French court reverses DS flash cart ruling, Nintendo smiles

Nearly two years ago, a French court dismissed a lawsuit that Nintendo filed against a group of vendors accused of illegally selling DS flash carts. At the time, the game-maker argued that sales of the cartridges should be halted on the grounds that they could be used to illegally pirate software, but the presiding judge thought differently, countering that the R4-like devices could be used to develop homebrews or other DIY projects. Last week, however, the Paris Court of Appeals overturned the ruling, in a decision that Nintendo has met with understandable delight. In a statement released today, the company confirmed that Divineo SARL and five other flash cart retailers must pay a total of €460,000 in criminal fines, along with €4.8 million in damages to Nintendo, as ordered by the appeals court. Details behind the ruling remain vague, though Nintendo hailed it as a “strong message to French companies… that such activities are illegal and will not be tolerated,” and that convicted vendors will “risk prison terms, face substantial fines and obligations to pay damages.” Sail past the break to read Nintendo’s statement, in full.

Norton Internet Security 2007 Not Much Better Than 2006

This article was written on September 23, 2006 by CyberNet.

The other day we mentioned how a site had analyzed a lot of different software to see what slows down your computer the most. They decided to do some more tests and Symantec must have not been too happy with their Norton Internet Security 2006 result because they provided a copy of Norton Internet Security 2007 to test this time. The outcome was exactly what you would expect…not much better:

Rowan Trollope, who worked on Norton Internet Security 2007, commented here on CyberNet saying:

Take a look at Norton Internet Security 2007. I worked on this product, and this year we spent alot of time rewriting almost the entire product to make it light and tight.

The results are that Norton Internet Security 2007 and Norton AntiVirus 2007 are the best performing security products on the market.

The only thing that you have to take into consideration when viewing the above results is that many of the others listed are not security suites (firewall, antivirus, etc…). However, it doesn’t appear that it is the “best performing security product” since even the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite beat it in every aspect of this test.

Eset (makers of NOD32) will be releasing their security suite later this year and it will be interesting to see how it stacks up to the competition.

Final Internet Explorer 7 (Yahoo Version) Released

Internet Explorer 7 (Yahoo Version)

Internet Explorer 7 is getting released today, as announced last week, and it looks like Yahoo’s version is already made available. Of course when you install this version it does come with the Yahoo toolbar and that kind of stuff.

Neowin, however, got smart and noticed how you can download Yahoo’s IE 7 and install it without the extras. All you have to do is extract the setup file using WinRAR (or a similar program) and execute the IE7-Setup.exe file. If this sounds like too much work then I will be posting later when Microsoft actually makes the regular IE 7 available.

Turn in a Software Pirate, Get $500

This article was written on December 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

Counterfeit Pirated Software

The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) has decided that they want to try and catch software pirates red handed. If you purchased software from on an online auction site, such as eBay, you might be eligible for a $500 reward if the software is pirated! Here’s how it works:

This campaign will run from December 13, 2007 to January 30, 2008.  The Program generally works as follows: The first 100 individuals who inadvertently purchase counterfeit software on an auction site, complete an application to participate in the “Don’t Get Mad, Get Even” program, submit the application to SIIA by no later than 5 pm EST January 30, 2008 and satisfy all the eligibility requirements necessary to participate in the program, will be eligible to receive up to $500 from SIIA.  The payment is intended to help the buyer purchase  a legitimate copy of the software.

The software you purchased has to be from a company that the SIIA has partnered with, which rules out all Microsoft software. The list does include companies like Adobe, Apple, Intuit, McAfee, Nero, and Symantec to name a few. Now’s the time to try and spot the counterfeit software on eBay, and purposely buy a copy…it could make you $500 richer!

This is good news for all of you selling software out of the trunk of your car! Since this only applies to online software sales you don’t have to worry about the SIIA trying to hunt you down. A bulk of their efforts will be focused on online piracy.

By the way, you can see my little shop above located next to my jewelry stand. Let me know if there’s any software that interests you. It’s a mobile business because every now and then we have to outrun the cops deliver some software, but that means we can come to you!

In case you’re not familiar with our humorous attitude here on the site, that is not really my software stand. Mine is much nicer and our software is a lot newer. Plus we’re not located next to a jewelry stand, instead we share a space with someone who sells stolen well-priced car stereos. ;)
