Microsoft Updates Vista 5308 Days After Its Release

This is the first time I have ever heard of Microsoft updating a CTP/Beta release just days after a build was released. That is right, Microsoft has released Windows Vista Build 5308.60 (the previous version was Vista Build 5308.17).

They supposedly made drastic speed improvements, fixed memory leaks, and is more stable. This is an unstaged build (the previous one was staged) where the unstaged build installs much faster.

The image above is from the Microsoft Connect site where it is available for download right now. Soon enough a torrent will become available and we will let you know as soon as it does. The current information on this build is as follows:

Name: FebCTP_5308.60_32bit_Main_Unstaged_DVD_EN.iso
Build Date: 02/23/2006
ISO Size: 2,256.74 MB
Versions: 32-bit & 64-bit / Server & Client
Download Link: Microsoft Connect (registered users only, a torrent should be available soon)

Download The “Official” Windows Vista Beta 2 Torrent

This article was written on June 11, 2006 by CyberNet.

Download The

Windows Vista Beta 2 has been made available by Microsoft for users to download for free. However, the download speeds can be terrible because there are so many people downloading it! So that is why a site was created that has made the Vista Beta 2 torrent available. They include the MD5 checksum so that you can verify that this is the real version of Windows Vista Beta 2.

Microsoft has not setup this site but some very reputable people, Chris and Jake, have put the site together. They said that if Microsoft wants them to take the site down then they will. So this is not officially done by Microsoft but the torrent is the Official Windows Vista Beta 2 version that was released to the public.

Here are the steps that you have to take to download Vista Beta 2 via the BitTorrent network:

  1. Start by downloading **FILE REMOVED FROM HOST**. If you don’t already have a BitTorrent Client, we recommend the free µTorrent for Windows (or the open source Azureus on Linux and/or OS X).
  2. When the ISO has completely downloaded, please run a checksum verification against the file. It must match this MD5 hash: 4B6641731977D390838B24A0C300D1C6. Accept no substitutes, as we downloaded this ISO directly from Microsoft’s servers. We recommend freeware like MD5 for verifying file/text integrity.
  3. If you haven’t already, you will need to visit Microsoft to get your registration code for this Vista beta. They’re free for the taking!
  4. This step is optional, but we ask that you please keep the torrent open once you’ve finished downloading it – as that will help increase the speed of subsequent downloads. We’d also appreciate it if you let others know about this site and the torrent.

Do you think Microsoft will let them leave the torrent up? I think that they might because of the horrible experience people are having when they try to download the ISO image from Microsoft.

How to Put a Calendar on Your Desktop Wallpaper

This article was written on December 10, 2010 by CyberNet.

arrow Windows Windows only arrow
One of the features in Windows 7/Vista that I use quite regularly is the ability to click on the time in the System Tray to reveal a month-to-month calendar. The only problem is that some of the systems I use on a regular basis are stilling running Windows XP, but in situations like that I fallback to a solution I’ve been using for years… a customized wallpaper for the desktop.

Lately I’ve been using a free app called SE-DesktopContructor that works really well. You can have it put both a clock and calendar on your desktop, and it works with custom images if you have an existing background that you’re particularly fond of already. Personally I opt for the solid black background for simplicity sake.

Here’s a rundown of my favorite things in SE-DesktopConstructor:

  • Customizable colors along with preset themes.
  • Adjust the positioning of clock/calendar using a drag-and-drop interface – remember, these are not widgets so any changes to the position will need to be made from within the settings interface.
  • Turn on/off the display of the clock and calendar depending on your own needs.
  • Automatically updates background as time/date changes.
  • Portable version is available.

The only thing I don’t like is that I can’t set the clock to a 12-hour format, but they do have some analog styles available if you’d rather go that route.

SE-DesktopConstructor is available in both installable and portable formats. It will always need to be running if you want the wallpaper to automatically update, otherwise killing the app leaves the modified wallpaper in place. In my tests it only used up about 11MB of memory, and didn’t use any CPU except for the split-second that it makes the wallpaper change at the turn of each minute.

Firefox 2.0 Gets Undo Close Tab & Scrolling Tabs

After upgrading to the latest nightly build of Firefox 2.0 I noticed two features that I haven’t seen before. One of the features was an “Undo Close Tab” button when you right-click on the tab-bar or on a tab. This allows a user to recover a site that they may have just accidentally closed. This is great because ever since they put that little red “X” on each tab I have accidentally closed sites several times.

The other feature that I don’t like very much is a scrolling tab-bar. When you open too many tabs Firefox will put scroll buttons on each end of the tab-bar. On my 1280×800 laptop screen it only allows me to open 10 tabs before it displays the scroll buttons. Hopefully they will end up letting users choose the minimum size of the tabs before the scroll buttons appear, otherwise I am sure there will be an extension to cure this!

Microsoft Shows Us Windows Vista

Microsoft Shows Us Windows Vista

Microsoft is showing us applications that are being created for Windows Vista. The demonstration is below and it is actually a little dull. The applications that are being previewed are, for me, some of the less interesting that are out there. I think that they are trying to target the business side, but I give you props if you take the time to watch all of them :) . After two or three I found myself falling asleep.

Download Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) Beta 2 Build 5299

If you have been waiting for the Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) Beta 2 then here is YOUR chance to preview it! It was just released a little while ago, well, I guess it was really leaked and not released. Make sure you check this out (screenshots can be seen at the source):

UPDATE: There is also a No-Install version of IE7 on RapidShare where you just need to extract the folder and run iexplorer.exe! This sounds simpler but I would only use it as an alternative.

UPDATE 2: PLEASE USE THE MEGAUPLOAD MIRROR BECAUSE RAPIDSHARE HAS REMOVED THE FILE! Please note, however, there is an inappropriate pop-up using this file sharing service! The No-Install version listed above is also still functional.

UPDATE 3: A RapidShare Host has been added by a user so CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD FROM RAPIDSHARE. By popular demand they put it in ZIP format! For everyone’s sake, if the link goes down please post here letting us know, it makes things much easier!

UPDATE 4: Microsoft has officially released IE7 Beta 2 Preview so CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD FROM MICROSOFT.

Download: PLEASE SEE UPDATE 4 ABOVE!

Patching Instructions for those Not running a Genuine Copy of Windows XP:
1) Download the patched iecustom.dll
iecustom.rar ( 68.32k )
2) Using a program like WinRAR, extract the contents of IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe to a random temporary directory
3) Open up the new temp dir and browse to the “update” folder
4) Replace iecustom.dll with our Patched version
5) Now, run update.exe, NOT iesetup.exe (Sorry, no purdy installer for you warez monkeys)

Firebug: The Most Useful Firefox Extension For Web Developers!

This article was written on December 05, 2006 by CyberNet.

Firebug

Some Firefox extensions are known for the large array of features and usefulness that they add to the browser. I have been impressed by several Firefox extensions before but Firebug takes it to a whole new level. It doesn’t even seem like it could be an extension because it adds that much functionality to Firefox.

I always loved being able to highlight some text on a page, right-click and select “View Selection Source.” That would pull up the source code for what I just highlighted and Firebug has something very similar, but again, it is much better. You can right click on any element or text and select “Inspect Element.” Doing so would pull up a window similar to the one that I have pictured above. It puts that source code in a collapsible tree format so that it isn’t difficult to sift through it looking for a particular spot. Then on the right side it will show you the CSS style element related to what you have selected.

I haven’t even gotten to the coolest thing in Firebug yet! You can actually edit the HTML and CSS code inside of the Firebug window and it will show you the changes live on the page. No more having to edit the CSS and refresh the window to see how it will affect things. Besides just being useful it is fun to tinker around with sites. :)

How long does it take a page to load? Firebug will break down how long it takes individual elements on a page to load and then total it up (this is found on the “Net” tab). According to its calculations CyberNet takes 7.71 seconds to load which is pretty close to what I had measured before…so I would say it is accurate.

I am just starting to tip the iceberg with the features Firebug has so you can go check out the rest. As of right now Firebug is free for everyone to use but it is currently in the Beta stage. The developer is considering the possibility of charging for the extension so that it can continually be improved. As much as I would like to see this remain free there is no doubt that the developer deserves the $25 that he is thinking about charging. If it remains free I’ll probably donate the money anyways because it is so useful.

Update:
Looks like Firebug will remain free and open source!

Thanks to “natmaster” for the tip!

Been too long since your last MeeGo fix? Foursquare’s stepping in to hold you over with a video of the popular location-based service on Nokia’s upcoming N9. While waiting to get your grubby paws all over Elop’s miscarriage, indulge yourself in an updated S40 app — shown running here on a couple Touch-and-Type devices — which now features tighter Ovi Maps integration and the heretofore omitted “Explore” function. The inclusions, the company reckons, will help those in emerging markets like South America and Asia grow its ten million over-sharing user base. Glimpses of both can be seen beyond the break along with Foursquare’s CEO Naveen Selvadurai musing on all things Finnish.

New Virus Poses As Windows Genuine Advantage

This article was written on July 13, 2006 by CyberNet.

New Virus Poses As Windows Genuine Advantage

There are not many people who are fond of Microsoft’s new Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Tool but there is obviously someone that really despises it. A new virus that is in the wild will pose as Microsoft’s WGA Notifier. It will run as a service named “wgavn” and describes itself as “Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Notification”.

The Virus is currently being passed through AIM via an instant message from an unknown sender. The message will contain a link and if you click on it, well, you should go crawl in a corner. It will disable your Windows Firewall and open a backdoor for future attacks. If you try to close down the service it will let you know that doing so will cause instability in your system.

Eset, the creators of NOD32 antivirus, rank this one as 1,400 on their threat list. Even though this is not high on the list AIM users should take caution when receiving messages from unknown people, which you shouldn’t have to be told that :D .
