Get Rid Of The Delay When Installing Firefox Extensions

Get Rid Of The Delay When Installing Firefox Extensions

We have all had the situation before where we have a nice clean Firefox profile and we start installing our favorite Firefox extensions. After you install the first few extensions you start to get frustrated because of the 5-second period that Firefox makes you wait before you can “authorize” the extension to install itself.

MR Tech Disable XPI Install Delay extension will eliminate that waiting period and allow you to click “Install Now” immediately. Just install the extension and save yourself some time. How much time will you save by getting rid of the 5-second delay? Let’s put it into perspective:

  • If you install 6 extensions/month for 10 years you will save yourself 1 hour! That’s enough time to get all of your pictures developed that you have laying around the house.
  • If you install 15 extensions/month for 15 years you will save yourself 3 hours and 45 minutes! That’s enough time to watch an entire NFL football game.
  • If you install 1 extension/day for 15 years you will save yourself 7 hours and 30 minutes! That’s an extra nights sleep for you (probably two nights for some of you :) ).
  • If you install 2 extensions/day for 30 years you will save yourself 1 day and 6 hours! Heck, you can take a vacation!
  • I think you get the point now :D .

For some people the number of extensions may seem high, while for others they may seem low. What a difference a few seconds here and there can make!

Microsoft Office 2008 SP1 Download

Interestingly enough Microsoft has released Office 2008 Service Pack 1 today for Macs. What’s interesting about that? Well, it is one of the fastest turnarounds for a Service Pack that I’ve ever seen. The suite of applications was just released back in January 2008, and here we are four months later with a Service Pack. Office 2007 for Windows didn’t see it’s first Service Pack for nearly a year after the consumer launch.

The press release issued by Microsoft said that the “velocity of sales for Office 2008 is nearly three times what [they] saw after the launch of Office 2004.” To help celebrate they decided to give us a glimpse of what the future holds for the next version of Mac Office. Drumroll please… VBA support! That’s right, but you’ll likely be waiting a few years before we see a new Mac Office pop out of the Microsoft bat cave.

What’s really interesting is the timing of the VBA announcement. It was just last week that OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta was released with some early stages of VBA support, and it’s almost as if Microsoft was afraid that users might start looking to OpenOffice.org to pick up where Microsoft left off. That might not be the case, but that was the first thing that popped into my mind.

At any rate Office 2008 SP1 is out, and ready for you to download. The list of features and improvements can be found below, but the 180MB download doesn’t bring anything too earth shattering.

Microsoft Entourage

  • Calendar. Significant enhancements to improve calendar view and all-day reminders with reoccurrence
  • Exchange Server support. Overall improvement to synchronization support, including removing attachments from Exchange Server messages and synchronizing to the server, as well as support for editing the contents of Exchange Server messages via AppleScript and synchronizing the changes to the server
  • E-mail images. Ability to send and view images in Entourage from third-party tools

Microsoft Office Word

  • Printing. Improved accuracy when orienting tables with cell shading
  • Document map. Improved reliability and responsiveness to select items
  • Notebook layout. Updated formatting, recording status and a variety of display options

Microsoft Office PowerPoint

  • Printing. Improvements to eliminate crashing when printing documents to high-dpi printers and increased overall printing speed by 10 times on some large presentations

Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.4 Released Today

Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.4 has been released even though Mozilla has not officially announced it. This build has been placed in their FTP folder under the releases section. I would think that they would announce the release later today, or at least by the weekend. However, the Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 release notes page has already been posted which is surprising since the Firefox one isn’t up yet.

For those people who want Portable Firefox then it is simple. All you have to do is download the Portable Firefox 1.5.0.4 file below. Then you unzip the file and browse for the file PortableFirefox.exe. Just execute that file and you will be running Firefox 1.5.0.4! The profile is kept with the PortableFirefox folder so you don’t have to worry about messing up your other profile and the uninstallation process is simple…just delete the folder! Don’t forget to stick it on your USB drive and carry it with you wherever you go.

Download Opera 9.1 Pre-Release With Fraud Protection

Opera 9.1 Fraud Warning

The Opera Desktop Team just posted an early build of Opera 9.1 that has the built-in Fraud Protection implemented. I went ahead and downloaded it to give it a try and it looks pretty nice so far. To test out the fraud protection you can refer to Google’s blacklist that I have posted here. Remember that most of the sites in that file are REAL phishing sites so be careful with your information.

They say that there is still some work that needs to be done before the phishing protection is fully functional but I think it is still better to be using this test build than to be using a build without the fraud protection. It has also been a month since their last weekly release of Opera so this build has quite a long changelog available.

Here are the direct download links for those people who want to browse the web using the latest bleeding edge technology:

Mozilla, of course, has been getting in on the effort to port Firefox and Thunderbird over to the Intel Mac computers. With the recent release of the Intel Mac laptops this is going to be a necessity! The finalized plans are estimated for March at which time all of the known bugs should be fixed. However, if you cannot wait that long then feel free to give the intermediate versions a shot. The download links are listed below.

Microsoft Releases Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0689 Beta Refresh

Microsoft has finally released a refresh of Windows Live Messenger and has made it publicly available. This build appears to offer some significant speed enhancements for signing into the Messenger service. They appear to have made some changes to the user interface in order to make it more streamlined and to make it match the whole Windows Live ‘theme’.

I have been very impressed with the changes that Microsoft has been making to Windows Live Messenger. They are definitely improving over the previous MSN Messenger versions. I just wish they would just get rid of the those darn advertisements so that I wouldn’t have to get a patch to do it for me.

Apple product managers respond to Final Cut Pro X criticism

During our call to discuss Final Cut Pro X earlier this week, an Apple product manager boasted about the product’s low price, media management, and ground-up redesign. Unfortunately, when starting from scratch, developers seem to have overlooked a few features that professional users have come to depend on, prompting widespread backlash — both on internet forums and even on Apple’s own App Store, where the $300 download-only app currently has a rating of just 2.5 stars (out of five), including nearly 500 one-star ratings. (Note: you must purchase the app before submitting a rating or review.) The New York Times spoke to product managers about these issues, which include an inability to import old FCP files, no multicamera editing, no support for RED cameras, and no ability to specify QuickTime export settings, among many others. Apple says there are (pricey) workarounds available, or fixes on the way for all but the first issue, but head over to the source link for the full rundown at NYT.

Active Virus Shield “Update Failed: Incorrect Signature” Fix

This article was written on September 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

Active Virus Shield - Update Failed: Incorrect Signature AOL’s decision to dump Kaspersky for McAfee was not accepted very well by the tech community. There was no official Vista-compatible version of Active Virus Shield (AVS) released before the switch had been made, but I had assumed that they would continue to provide support for at least the next few months for the XP version.

That turned out to not be the case as several readers have reported to me that as of last week they were receiving an "Update failed: Incorrect signature" error (the corresponding error codes were 0x8000005C and 0x8000005A). Netster007x was the first to notify me of the issue, and after looking around I began to think that the issue lied in the update server.

I managed to find a Google Group that had several other people complaining about the same error message in Active Virus Shield. One eagle-eyed commenter noticed that you could bypass the problem by removing the two AOL entries from the list of update servers. Here’s the quick how-to on doing that:

  1. Right-click on the Active Virus Shield System Tray icon and close the program. Alternatively you could boot your computer into Safe Mode.
  2. Open this file:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\AVP6\Data\aol-updcfg.xml
  3. Remove the top two lines from the file:
    <site2 url="ftp://download.newaol.com/avs/update/mirror/" diff_url="diffs" weight="10000001" region="*" />
    <site2 url="http://download.newaol.com/avs/update/mirror/" diff_url="diffs" weight="10000000" region="*" />
  4. Save the changes and restart Active Virus Shield (or restart your computer).

Now your Active Virus Shield should be back to normal, and updating regularly. Of course support for this application is extremely limited now that AOL isn’t using it anymore, but the last version is still available for download on sites like Softpedia, MajorGeeks, and CNet.

So it looks like there is a workaround for the time being, and for some of you it will be worth it since Kaspersky (which powers Active Virus Shield) is ranked as one of the best antivirus solutions. Although I prefer to just use the always free Avast! or AVG.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Small Apps That Do Big Things (For Windows & Mac’s)

This article was written on December 16, 2006 by CyberNet.

Thumbnail Generator Freeware is always my favorite kind of software and that is what I try to write about the most. There aren’t any nag screens, trial periods, or anything that you have to worry about…just download, install, and run. The other great thing about freeware is that they typically keep your computer pretty clean by containing their preferences and settings in a single folder, instead of adding keys to the registry that will never get uninstalled properly.

There are all kinds of sites that I have come across that offer great lists of freeware but TinyApps.org is a little unique. Just like the name implies the site is dedicated to making it easy to find the software you’re looking for while minimizing the amount of hard drive space that the applications use. Most of the programs that I have seen on there are under 1MB in download size and after installation they will probably occupy around 1MB to 2MB of hard drive space. That’s virtually nothing compared to some of the bloated software we’re used to!

Flipping through some of their categories will reveal some interesting software that you have probably never heard of, with everything from file renaming applications to media players. For each program they list the filesize along with a brief description so that you can figure out if it is right for you. Also, if you look for the little computer icon at the end of the description that means you can click on that icon and it will show you a screenshot.

Mac users are also in luck because they have a category that contains some tiny applications just for the Apple computers. Pocket PC users aren’t quite so lucky but Palm users may find the small list of software useful as well.

Note: The software that is pictured above is the Easy Thumbnail generator that I found in the Graphics Category.

You heard right — Samsung’s slimmest slate yet is now on speaking terms with OS X, well over a month after the first ones slipped out to developers at Google I/O. Oddly enough, it looks as if Android File Transfer is still stuck in yesteryear, with Samsung itself pushing out a revised build of Kies to enable Tab-to-Mac relations.
