Sunswift IV, world’s fastest solar-powered racer, leaves GM Sunraycer in its dust

The Sunswift IV (aka IVy) might look like a mobile dinner table, but it’s actually the world’s fastest solar-powered vehicle. The table-top on wheels got the official nod from the Guinness Book of World Records last week, for hitting a top speed of 88km/h (about 55 mph) — nearly 10 km/h faster than the previous record-holder, the GM Sunraycer, which bears a striking resemblance to a disembodied Android monster. IVy, designed by Sunswift, a student-run non-profit at the University of New South Wales, reached its top speed using 1050 watts, about 400 watts less than the Sunraycer, and performed its record-smashing run without the 25kg battery it’s usually packing. Faster runs have been clocked, including by IVy, but Guinness has not been on hand for confirmation.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: of space elevators, floating cities and solar sheltered drinking machines

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

Zephyr solar-powered UAV breaks three more world records

The Zephyr is a winning machine. Last we reported, QinetiQ’s solar-powered drone had just completed 7-days in the air, and counting. Now, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) has confirmed that Zephyr completed that record-breaking flight with a solid 2-weeks in the air (336 hours). If that wasn’t enough to put other drones to shame, FAI found that Zephyr also destroyed records for flight duration for a UAV of its class, and the altitude record for that class at 21,562 meters, or 70,741 feet. So keep the records coming, Zephyr, because everyone loves a winner, even when that winner is a unmanned war machine.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: rocket fuel, recycled jeans, and the electric eel powered Christmas tree

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

Eco transportation took off this week as researchers in Sweden discovered a new molecule that could make rocket fuel 30 percent more efficient. We also caught up with Russia’s plans to construct a new high-speed rail system for the 2018 World Cup, and we saw several major auto manufacturers give their vehicles green upgrades – Ford announced it will insulate its 2010 Focus with recycled jeans, and Chevrolet launched plans to transform 100,000 pounds of used oil booms into parts for the Volt.

The past week also saw bright horizons dawn for renewable energy as the world’s largest parabolic trough solar plant received a $1.5 billion DOE loan. The world of consumer tech was energized by the sun’s rays as Toshiba unveiled a new solar-powered e-book reader and one designer developed a solar-powered desalination system that could keep shipwrecked survivors alive at sea. We also brought you artist Michael McKean’s plan to shoot rainbows across the sky at will with his solar-powered rainbow generator.

Speaking of spreading renewable cheer, this month Japan’s Enoshima Aquarium unveiled the world’s first Christmas tree powered by an electric eel. The FAA also got into the holiday spirit as they approved a next-gen Santa sleigh that delivers gifts 53% faster, and if you unwrapped a new video game system this year, you may be interested to know that the Nintendo Wii was recently crowned the most energy-efficient next-gen gaming console. New solar machine could generate hydrogen fuel, food for your future vehicle

We’re hesitant to file this one in the folder marked “Awesome Things That’ll Never Happen,” but it’s definitely on the watch list. A new prototype solar device has been concocted to convert sunlight into fuel, much in the same way a plant does. Eco-minded folks will probably understand that conventional photovoltaic panels “must use the electricity they generate in situ,” and thus, cannot deliver energy at night; this here device takes a rather unorthodox approach, using the sun’s rays along with ceria (a magical, marvelous metal oxide) to “break down carbon dioxide or water into fuels which can be stored and transported.” In theory, at least, the device could be used to create hydrogen and / or carbon monoxide, with the former being obviously useful for fueling up hydrogen-based cars of the future. Sadly, the existing prototype is horribly inefficient — only around 0.7 percent of the solar energy can be converted into fuel — but researchers are adamant that they can boost that to nearly 20 percent in time. We’ll check back in a decade or so to see how things are progressing.

Solar Vox, a Portable Sun-Powered Charging Station

The Solar Vox, from Detroit-based designers  Eric Strebel and Jim Nogarian, is a USB charger powered by the sun. The project has been launched on Kickstarter, the place where potential customers can pledge their cash for startups, in exchange for getting one of the first products off the line.

The Solar Vox consists of a solar panel and a pair of rechargeable AA batteries, housed in a box shaped like a tiny air-hockey table. This odd design, a rather 1980s-style vision of the future, has a purpose: the case can be tilted to fully soak up the sunbeams. The odd angles let you prop the box at 0, 30, 70 and 90-degrees.

Once charged, you hook up your cellphone or other portable device and pop it into the inner chamber. This keeps things tidy, and protects the phone from the sun.

Eric and Jim plan to have the first units ready in the first quarter of 2011. To sign up and get one when they’re done, you’ll need to pledge $100.

Eton Raptor emergency radio trades the crank for solar power, rakish good looks

If “danger” is your middle name and yet “caution” a favorite word, you’ve probably already got an ugly old emergency radio buried somewhere in your car. Today, Eton’s unveiling a model that you might actually feel comfortable using in public without disaster having to strike first. The solar-powered Eton Raptor boasts a slender, 11-ounce carabiner-like design that seems positively packed with tools, including the typical (AM / FM / WB radio, compass, LED flashlight), the adventurous (altimeter, barometer) and the plain ol’ useful (audio line-in, bottle opener). It’s also got a USB port for charging gadgets from the internal 1800mAh battery and takes splash-proof cues from the Eton Soulra. No word on price, but we know a few road warriors who might be interested when it hits shelves in the first quarter of next year. PR after the break, images immediately below.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: electric cars compared, molten salt solar, and a renewable Merry Christmas!

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

Electric vehicles took the country by storm this week as both the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt were officially released to eager customers – if you’re still trying to decide between the two, check out our electric vehicle smackdown, which compares the two EVs based on their most important features. We also took a spin inside Honda’s electric Fit, and we showcased a futuristic home decked out with enough solar panels to completely charge an EV. The Sonex airplane also signaled bright horizons for electric aviation as it completed its maiden flight.
