Intel issues firmware update for ailing X18-M and X25-M SSDs

Wait, what’s this? Intel admitting that its X18-M and X25-M SSDs do actually have the potential to slow after extended use? After the company flat out denied allegations brought forth by PC Perspective earlier this year, it has now quietly pushed out a v1.1 update for the 80GB and 160GB versions of the aforementioned devices. All we’re told is that it brings along “several continuous improvement optimizations intended to provide the best possible user experience,” but there’s absolutely no denying what it’s really aiming to fix. Intel still maintains that the likelihood of users experiencing any long-term issues are next to nothing, but we’d suggest applying the update just in case. Wouldn’t want to be missing out on any lightning fast read / write rates, now would you?

SandForce breaks into SSD market with speedy SF-1000 processors

With SSD prices still well above the point of affordability, we’re thrilled to see more entrants joining the burgeoning market. Big players like Western Digital and Corsair are being greeted by small timers such as PhotoFast, Fusion-io and SandForce, the latter of which has just escaped “stealth mode” in order to launch its first solid state drive processor family. The chips utilize DuraClass technology and promise to address “key NAND flash issues allowing MLC flash technologies to be reliably used in broad based, mission critical storage environments.” More germane to our discussion is the nice boost in transfer rates and lower cost of production; we’re told that the SF-1000 crew sports a standard 3 gigabit-per-second SATA host interface connecting up to 512 gigabytes of commodity NAND flash memory, and that it delivers 30,000 IOPS and 250MB/s performance (sequential 128KB read or write transfers) with 100 micro-second latency. If all goes well, select OEMs will be launching SSDs based on this processor later this year, so we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled.

Super Talent ships $1,500 2.5-inch MasterDrive RX 512GB SSD

Just a year ago, Toshiba was dreaming of 512GB SSDs while simultaneously trying to figure out why in the world HD DVD became such a dumpster fire. Fast forward to today, and you can own one of these mythical masterpieces (albeit with a Super Talent logo) if you don’t mind parting with $1,499.99. Starting this very moment, the company’s most capacious MasterDrive RX device yet is ready to rumble, bringing with it loads of MLC NAND flash, 230MB/sec read rates and 200MB/sec write rates. Suddenly, that forthcoming Z Drive doesn’t look so outrageously priced, huh?

Corsair’s ultra speedy 256GB SSD sneaks out, hits the bench

My, how fast the cutting edge becomes dull. Nary four months ago, we were introduced to Corsair‘s first SSD: a 2.5-inch 128GB slab of MLC NAND goodness that promised 90MB/sec read and 70MB/sec write speeds. Needless to say, those numbers weren’t about to shatter any records, so the company went out and produced something that just might. The benchmarking fiends over at HotHardware managed to scoop up a 256GB S256 from the company and put it through the first of many tests. As for results? Early reports show average read speeds nailing the 200MB/sec mark, while average write rates hovered just under 170MB/sec. The only issue is the breathtaking $749 price tag (expected, anyway), but at least you’ve apparently got a few months to save up.

Fusion-io nabs more funding, teases new PCIe-based ioSAN

Given Fusion-io‘s dominance in the SSD-on-a-PCIe-card arena, we aren’t at all shocked to hear that it just landed a nice fat check in its Series B funding efforts. $47.5 million, to be precise. According to the firm, it’ll use the dough to buy bottled unicorns, a kilo of fairy dust and “increase production capabilities” in order to pump out more wares (and hopefully at lower prices). One of those products, we’re told, will be the summer-bound ioSAN, which is explained as a “PCI Express-based product that extends the raw power of Fusion-io’s solid-state technology across the network.” In related news, the company also selected David Bradford to be its CEO, instantly making him one of the most fortunate bigwigs in the world right now.

Super Talent’s 2TB PCIe RAIDDrive promises 1.3GBps sequential writes, 1.2GBps reads

These PCIe SSD drives can’t arrive fast enough for our needs… ok, wants considering the thousands they cost. The latest announcement comes by way of Super Talent Technology with its new 2TB RAIDDrive. The card slips into a PCIe x8 slot and ships in Enterprise (battery backed), Workstation, and Gamer (!) configurations with MLC (cheap, fast) or SLC (expensive, faster) NAND and optional RAID 5 capability. Super Talent claims that its RAIDDrives “are capable of delivering sequential Read speeds of up to 1.2GB/s, sequential Write speeds of up to 1.3GB/s.” Unfortunately, no ship date or price was announced, only that we’ll get more “performance details” in June. Presumably that means something useful like random IOPS benchmarks.

Motion brings Verizon WWAN, SSD, other upgrades to C5 and F5 tablet PCs

It’s been a solid tick since Motion Computing overhauled its F5 Slate PC, but all that’s changing (seriously) today. As you can tell, the device now sports a freshened look with a black exterior to “better withstand dirty and dusty mobile work environments.” Additionally, the C5 tablet is joining in for the rest of the upgrades, which include inbuilt support for Verizon Wireless’ EV-DO network, Intel’s WiFi Link 5300 series 802.11a/g/n, Core 2 Duo CPU options, improved battery life, a 64GB SSD option and an external battery charger for hardcore field users. The Motion F5 gets going at $2,699, while the C5 starts up at $500 less; both machines are shipping now to the company’s network of resellers and distributors, and the release can be peeked in full just after the break.

Western Digital enters SSD market via $65m SiliconSystems acquisition

Man, the consolidation efforts are really heating up. Just days after Cisco forked out a small fortune to acquire Pure Digital, HDD mainstay Western Digital has penned a check for $65 million in cold, hard cash in order to acquire SiliconSystems, Inc. Said outfit is an Aliso Viejo, California-based supplier of solid-state drives for the embedded systems market, and rather than wasting any more time falling behind in the SSD realm, WD figured it prudent to just buy the technology it needed to position itself as a legitimate competitor. WD has already made clear that it hopes to sell SSDs for the netbook, client and enterprise markets, and given that integration will begin “immediately,” we’re hoping to see some shipping products sooner rather than later.

AnandTech explores the virtues and woes of today's SSD

If you’re interested in SSD, chances are you’ve been paying attention to the allegations of performance degradation in Intel’s X25-M drives. AnandTech dives into the issue (and many, many more topics) in 31 page exploration of the state of solid state. It’s a spine-tingling read, in part explaining how write-speed degradation is largely thanks to partially used pages containing portions of deleted files. We all know deleted files typically aren’t really gone until they’re overwritten, a problem in SSDs because to clear a section of a page the entire page needs to be cleared. That entails moving anything you want to keep to the cache, wiping the whole page, then re-writing that good data from cache. The hope is that a new delete command dubbed TRIM (set to find support in Windows 7) will speed up writes by forcing the system to perform this work during deletes, but ahead of that the article still recommends Intel’s drives; even at their worst they’re still generally faster than the comparably priced competition when it comes to average use — not to mention faster than your platters.
