Samsung Galaxy S 4G pegged for February 23rd launch at $150

Liked that Galaxy S 4G we just showed you chowing down on tapas out in Barcelona? Well, take heart, T-Mobile subscribers: your Vibrant replacement with HSPA+ support and video calling capability has just been assigned a February 23rd release date for $149.99 on contract. We’ve known for some time that it’d be released in February, granted, but look at it this way: they’re pushing it out a full five days before they’d absolutely have to in order to stay true to their word. If you’re feeling tempted, given Sammy’s track record, just be sure you’re comfortable with the idea that you might be on Froyo for a while.

T-Mobile Galaxy S 4G hands-on

What do you get when you gently massage HSPA+ support and a front-facing camera for video calling into a Vibrant’s backside using technology, science, and a selection of essential oils? Well, you get a Galaxy S 4G — and in the case of Samsung’s US-focused event this evening here at MWC, you get a Galaxy S 4G on orange crushed velvet. The phone feels exactly like a Vibrant — thin, but still almost ridiculously light for its size — and looks exactly the same from the front. Like a mullet, though, it’s the back where the Galaxy S 4G starts to party: T-Mobile’s switched up the cheap-looking gloss black plastic on the Vibrant for a trick gray optical effect battery cover that seems to shimmer as you move it around. Definitely a step up, and it’ll let the T-Mobile enthusiasts around you know that you mean business. Follow the break for our quick hands-on video!

T-Mobile G-Slate hands-on: yep, it’s an LG Optimus Pad

In case there was any lingering doubt in your mind, we can now definitely confirm — having just played with it — that the G-Slate that’ll be going on sale shortly from T-Mobile in the States is a dead ringer for the Optimus Pad officially unveiled here at MWC this week. We just posted our impressions on that bad boy a few minutes ago, so let’s go over the few differences: first off, there’s a tastefully small T-Mobile logo silkscreened toward one side of the back (and thankfully, no logo whatsoever on front). As software goes, the only customizations include a utility to activate the tablet on T-Mobile’s network along with the standard My Device app that users of T-Mobile’s other Android hardware will be familiar with; the carrier tells us it’ll be making some additional announcements revolving around media and content partnerships closer to launch (tablets are good for reading and watching things, don’t you know), but they don’t have anything ready to unveil just yet. That’s literally it — other than those minor details, customers on both sides of the pond are going to be enjoying the same 3D-capturing Honeycomb action with this one. See the full gallery below!

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4G for T-Mobile going for $149 at Walmart

It may be a Vibrant with Froyo, a front-facing camera and a thing for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but it’s still downright enviable when you consider the Galaxy S 4G‘s innate support for 21Mbps downloads. As of today, neither Samsung nor T-Mobile USA have been perfectly clear about how much they’d be demanding for this guy, but thanks to a leaked pricing sheet from Walmart, it looks as if it’ll be a solid $50 less than most new smartphones. Those who waltz into Wally World later this month will be able to take one home for $148.88 with a two-year service agreement, or if you’re the No Strings Attached kind of individual, $650. Ah, the choices we’re saddled with.

LG G-Slate handled on video, looks like a giant Optimus 2X

The wonders you can find on YouTube, eh? LG’s G-Slate (to be known as the Optimus Pad outside the US) has made yet another appearance on Google’s video repository, this time giving us a whirl to show off its slender body and port and speaker arrangement. The integrated 3D cameras also get a demo, as you can see above, though we’re much more excited to be able to churn out 1080p video with this device thanks to the Tegra 2 SOC it’s built around. Its smartphone buddy the Optimus 2X delivered some very smooth output and we can’t see any reason why the G-Slate should do any worse. Make your way past the break for all the intimate video action.

[Thanks, KC]

T-Mobile is Offering Free Phones for Two Days with New Contract

T-MobileOffer.jpg

To help its customers feel the love this Valentine’s Day, T-Mobile is offering up all of its phones for free with a new contract. How did they know all we want for Valentine’s Day is a free smartphone?

If you sign up for a new two-year contract on Friday, February 11 or Saturday, February 12, you can get any of T-Mobile’s 30 handsets for free, no phones excluded. So you can choose from it’s newest and most popular phones, including the myTouch 4G, HTC HD7, Samsung Vibrant, and T-Mobile G2 with Google. You may have to send in a mail-in rebate for it to be “free,” but that’s not too much of a hassle for a any free phone of your choosing. T-Mobile also just announces that Khloé Kardashian will be in a special Valentine’s video. To view it, visit T-Mobile’s YouTube or Facebook page on Wednesday, February 9.

Oh my, the excitement of free phones and Kloé Kardashian.

T-Mobile offering all phones for free on contract this weekend

T-Mobile has a reputation for offering some of the more steeply-discounted promotions among the big four US carriers, but this one takes the cake: as long as you’re willing to sign on for a new contract, you can get any phone they offer for free this weekend. Billed as a Valentine’s Day deal, shoppers on Friday and Saturday will be eligible to get literally any handset in the store — including the myTouch 4G, HD7, G2, and Vibrant — gratis, albeit with their names inked on a new two-year deal. You still might be contending with a mail-in rebate to bring the net cost down to free, but it still ain’t bad — and if you already have a line of service, you can get in on the offer by agreeing to a full upgrade. Follow the break for the press release.

Elaborate Arduino tutorial explains the nuts and bolts of communicating over GSM

If you’re looking to make yourself somewhat more productive on this lazy weekend, and you’ve got an Arduino or two collecting dust, we’ve got just the thing to add line after line to your dwindling to-do list. Tronixstuff has a borderline insane tutorial series going, and as of now, 27 chapters have been published. It’s essentially the Arduino Bible, but the two most recent additions in particular have piqued our interest. With the explosion in mobile broadband, even hackers are looking to get their creations online. If you’ve mastered the art of Arduino, but haven’t yet been brave enough to toss in a bit of GSM communication, the how-to guides linked below definitely deserve your attention. Just be careful how you write that code — one wrong line with a SIM card installed could lead to text overages that’ll take two lifetimes to pay off.

T-Mobile’s upcoming HSPA+ WWAN offerings get leaked, comical codenames revealed

It’s been a hot minute since the folks at T-Mobile have introduced a new USB WWAN modem, but if the document above is to be believed, that could be changing in short order. As the Jet ages, it looks like a few others — codenamed Kitty Hawk, Washington and Wayne — could be swooping in to take things from here. The former is rumored to hit shelves in March, offering HSPA+ speeds of 21Mbps and the ability to solve most of the world’s problems. As for Washington? That’ll be T-Mob’s first USB modem to offer HSPA+ speeds approaching 42Mbps, and if all goes well, this guy will also splash down next month. Moving on, there’s a pair of Waynes that’ll serve as the carrier’s first mobile hotspots, enabling five WiFi-enabled devices to mooch off of a 21Mbps (Lil’ Wayne) or 42Mbps (Big Wayne) connection. Here’s hoping T-Mobile does the smart thing and sticks with the codenames — the marketing exec in us just knows it’s the right thing to do.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play retail booths exposed

We said it at the Show and we’ll say it again, Sony Ericsson just can’t keep a lid on (any) secret information. The Xperia Play, formerly and more poetically known as the PlayStation Phone, has been previewed, videoed, and loved (mostly by us), but today we can add even more to our foreknowledge about this still unannounced device in the form of its in-store booths. Yes, SE has planned out how resellers and carriers will pimp its gaming smartphone at retail, and yes, renders of that “brand experience” have leaked out. It’s nothing jaw-dropping, just some upright pedestals with the words “smart phone, smart gaming” on its side, but at least it signals that we’re at an advanced stage of preparations ahead of the handset’s launch. There is a T-Mobile logo on there too, but that could be just a placeholder or could refer to territories outside the US. Either way, spring does sound like the perfect time for some more Gingerbread in our lives.

Update: Although we’ve been assured that the layout above is genuine, the slim device pictured on top of the stands looks like the Xperia Arc. The device at the bottom looks more like a cross between a PSP Go and the Xperia Play. Of course,
we’re expecting to see a myriad of Android devices announced with PlayStation Suite support, so who knows.
