Germany’s Deutsche Telekom — better known in the States as T-Mobile USA’s disciplinarian parent — was out in New York today chatting up its American division’s prospects for the future, and execs from both sides of the pond had quite a bit to say. The biggest outstanding concerns for the carrier revolve around revenue and customer churn — which, let’s be honest, are the core benchmarks that any carrier in the world is looking to improve — and the division’s CEO Philipp Humm just announced a series of initiatives to help get those numbers in line. On the churn side, they’re “going big with Android” to combat the iPhone, continuing to roll out WiFi calling to alleviate network coverage issues, and tightening up “risk management” issues that have let some bill deadbeats slip through the cracks. Funny to think that non-payment is a big enough issue to be a revenue risk for these guys, but it’s true.

Whoa, this is kind of out of the blue: on top of the Vibrant 4G that we’ve already had leaked ad nauseam (though he refers to it as a “Galaxy S 4G”), T-Mobile USA CEO Phiipp Humm mentioned at an event this morning that the company is preparing an HSPA+ Sidekick — yes, a Sidekick — albeit with Android slotted in place of the defunct Danger Hiptop operating system. For the record, T-Mobile hasn’t had any Sidekicks in its lineup since the middle of last year, though it does own the Sidekick brand — not Danger / Microsoft — and would undoubtedly love to bring it back to relevance. Coincidentally, Mister Android himself, Andy Rubin, came from Danger — so the Sidekick’s starting to follow him around. Kind of like… you know, a sidekick. Both products are said to be “coming soon.”

The texting-while-driving epidemic is starting to get a lot of carrier attention, and T-Mobile’s taking it to the next level today by throwing its weight behind a new subscription-based upgrade to the DriveSmart app that’s been available on the LG Optimus T since launch. DriveSmart Plus runs $4.99 a month for all lines on your account (provided the lines are attached to compatible devices) and upgrades the basic DriveSmart app by automatically detecting when your car’s in motion — no need to enable it by hand — at which point incoming calls are automatically sent to voicemail and incoming text messages are met with an automatic response that the recipient is currently driving. Naturally, there’s an emergency override built-in — but to make sure young drivers aren’t abusing it, DriveSmart offers parents the option of being contacted by text or email when it’s overridden and can let them monitor overall phone usage through a web interface. The service is only available on the Optimus T initially, but more hardware support is “coming soon.”

On a related note, T-Mobile is also introducing FamilyWhere, matching similar services already offered by Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint by letting parents see where their young’uns are and set up customized alerts by location and time; it’s apparently compatible with “nearly any type” of phone on the T-Mobile network, so you shouldn’t need to equip the tykes with superphones just to get this action set up. It runs $9.99 a month and covers all the lines on your account; follow the break for both press releases.

We know exactly what Canada’s Rogers is thinking right now: “c’mon, T-Mobile, you guys are leaving money on the table!” Though Rogers and its Fido subsidiary are charging CAD $50 to unlock an iPhone, T-Mobile’s Dutch division is now willing to do it gratis, citing the fact that multiple Dutch carriers now offer the iPhone and they no longer feel the need to keep it SIM-locked. Refreshing attitude, isn’t it? As of January 12th, newly-activated iPhones on T-Mobile Netherlands are unlocked automatically; existing customers can call into customer service to get an unlock now, or wait until February for a do-it-yourself method. Of course, the irony is that when a carrier treats you that well, you don’t really want to leave — but this’ll be a great option for folks that do a lot of roaming and don’t care to go the ultrasn0w route.

Perhaps Samsung’s Vibrant 4G won’t be tied to Froyo, after all. Although the initial leak suggested Android 2.2, Boy Genius Report’s managed to obtain what it suggests is an in-the-wild shot with a lock screen that looks remarkably reminiscent of the aesthetic touches from Android 2.3 Gingerbread. No TouchWiz UI here, but word on the street (i.e. from its source) is Sammy’s hard at work to remedy that disconnect and make the skin jibe with the new version. And if that’s not enough, TmoNews is claiming a leaked document that indicates Vibrant 4G will launch February 23rd. Back to the picture, though: if that timestamp is at all accurate, and this is really just hours fresh, perhaps that lucky right-handed gent can snap a few more convincing shots while it charges.

Update: As a number of readers have pointed out, there’s some odd discrepancies between this image and the Gingerbread lock screen we all know, chief among them the inclusion of AM / PM in the top bar (that option doesn’t exist in actual 2.3. we just checked to be sure). Brief Mobile’s got a more nuanced breakdown, but the point is, this looks to be either a half-baked ROM or the work of a certain Robin Goodfellow.
