Hasta La Gadget!

Yes, true: T-Mobile announced last week by way of Twitter that it would be retailing the HD7 on November 8th — the same day as AT&T’s Samsung Focus and HTC Surround — for $199.99 on contract. Thing is, it turns out that AmazonWireless is going to be selling it for $169.99 on contract… which, by our calculations, is $30 less for the same product! Obviously, it’s the norm for retailers like Amazon and Wirefly to charge less for phones on new two-year deals than their first-party counterparts — but what’s notable here is that Amazon will be undercutting T-Mobile by a nice little margin on day one. Well, at least we think it’ll be day one; the site quotes “usually 1 to 3 weeks” for shipping, which should match up with the drop date, give or take.

Update: Newegg (via seller Simplexity) has ’em for $150… so yeah, needless to say, looks like there’ll be no shortage of ways to get this thing for less than the $200 T-Mobile wants. Thanks, Matt!

After what feels like an eternity of leaks, RIM has finally (finally!) come forward with the first BlackBerry Bold to ship with BlackBerry 6. The Bold 9780 looks exactly as we expected it to (meaning not too far from the 9700 design tree), boasting an optical trackpad, QWERTY keyboard, a WebKit-based browser and a five megapixel camera. You’ll also get inbuilt 3G / WiFi, and at least on the T-Mob version, UMA / WiFi calling. Geotagging your images is a breeze courtesy of the integrated GPS module, and RIM’s also tossing in 512MB of Flash memory as well as a microSD slot. We’re told to expect it from “various carriers around the world beginning in November,” with T-Mobile USA confirming that its version will hit on the 17th of next month for $129.99 on a two-year contract.

T-Mobile said it was “working to deliver” hotspot support to T-Mobile G2 users, and now we might know the reason for the delay — an allegedly leaked document details Magenta’s scheme to offer a comprehensive data tethering plan for a $14.99 monthly fee. According to the convincingly worded internal memo, the new feature will let you tether over WiFi, Bluetooth or a physical USB cable at both 3G and HSPA+ speeds, though only on a $20 or higher unlimited data plan — so if you’ve got just 200MB, you’ll have to spend them on the small screen. The doc also says it’s subject to T-Mobile’s recent throttling efforts, so don’t expect to enjoy HSPA+ on your tethered tablet for long: “Customers who purchase a T-Mobile mobile broadband product like the upcoming Galaxy Tab should activate with a webConnect plan to ensure the best experience,” the document specifically suggests. The plan’s apparently coming November 3rd, a date which is associated with another likely rumor, too — TmoNews has a leaked email of its own suggesting the new myTouch will hit November 3rd as well. With Verizon, AT&T and Sprint all already charging for connection sharing, we suppose the writing was on the wall. The days of ambiguous wireless freedom are just about over, folks.

Pick your poison: Vodafone Netherlands? T-Mobile UK? A shop associated with Orange? Or heck, how about RIM itself? All of the above have started teasing the BlackBerry Bold 9780 recently, RIM’s oft-leaked upcoming replacement for the Bold 9700 — so it seems like this will be a pretty wide-scale deployment around the globe (as most of RIM’s launches tend to be). We’ve yet to see any leaks via American carriers, but we’d say it’s safe to argue that AT&T (and perhaps T-Mobile, too) will be signed up to take delivery of these things before too long. As a refresher, the 9780 is basically a 9700 with a better camera, more RAM, and BlackBerry 6 preloaded… so if you love your 9700, you’re probably going to love the 9780 even more. Timing is unclear, but one carrier — Vodafone Netherlands — has proclaimed that it’ll have ’em in early November.

It’s almost Halloween, kiddies. Do you have your spooky stories ready for telling around the campfire? If you need a little help, take inspiration from this doozy told by Grant Castle, a Director at T-Mobile USA. It was submitted to the FCC way back in January and as a sort of written protest against “risky and unnecessary” net neutrality rules. He tells the tale of an undisclosed IM app that caused the network of an undisclosed city to go offline due to its too-frequent polling to check for updates. T-Mo engineers had to reach out to that app’s developer and get him to change its code, saving the company’s towers from the program’s thousands of users. There’s no telling which of the company’s many outages were caused by the app that wouldn’t die (shriek), but we’d sure hate to think that any members of the FCC are losing sleep over this saga of corporate woe.
