Hasta La Gadget!

Great news, fans of multitouch (at least in Windows 7): According to the crazy kids at Netbook Market, the Eee PC T91 — that 8.9-inch resistive touch screen convertible tablet sporting an Intel Atom Z520 (1.33GHz) processor, Windows XP Home, a max of 2GB memory and a 16GB SSD, will start shipping today. And you know what that means! It’s only a matter of time before some sick person guts one of these things and sends us a pics and / or video. We’ll be keeping an eye out, and we’ll be sure to notify the proper authorities.

Our initial experience with Windows 7’s multitouch was decidedly less than stellar, but it looks like Microsoft’s taking the initiative to ramp up the usability with the newly-unveiled Touch Pack. It’s a software suite consisting of three games and three Surface apps, including a a globe you can pinch and twist around, the ever-popular surface collage for images, and and a zen-inspired lagoon screensaver. OEMs making touchscreen-capable Windows 7 rigs are being offered the pack to use as a pre-installed option, so look for these to arrive around the same time as the new OS, which should be sometime this holiday season. In the meantime, GottaBeMobile’s gotten their hands on the app collection early, and you can view their efforts in the video after the break.

Guard your retinas, fashionistas — this one’s bound to burn. Data Ltd has just loosed its latest ultra-rugged tablet PC, and it’s quite clear that the gains in rigidity come at a severe cost to style. The DLI 8400 is actually rather diminutive for a tablet, weighing just three pounds and packing a 7-inch sunlight-viewable LCD. Other specs include a backlit QWERTY keypad, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, built-in WWAN, 2GB of RAM, twin hot-swappable batteries (good for nine hours of use) and a shock-mounted HDD or SSD. Naturally, the IP54-rated enclosure is home to Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom CPU, and there’s a plethora of ports for field workers with gobs of peripherals. The Q2-bound rig gets going at $1,795, and while there’s no telling what kind of beating this thing can survive, it’s obviously done well to walk away from that awful plummet from atop the ugly tree. At first glance, PeeWee PC’s Pivot Tablet Laptop is a formidable rival to the long-standing OLPC XO. Unfortunately, the lofty price tag puts it in a class of its own, but it’s still a solid machine for those looking to a learn a bit (or just give their kids a wholesome distraction). Debuting today, the three pound convertible tablet boasts a spill and drop-resistant shell, a carry handle, a presumed 10-inch touchscreen display and a 6-cell Li-ion battery. Within, you’ll find a 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, two USB 2.0 ports, a 60GB HDD, 1.3 megapixel camera, Ethernet, WiFi, Windows XP Home, a proprietary security suite to keep kids from picking up a new favorite stalker and ten age appropriate software and game titles. We’re still not sold on the $250 price tag for Skytone‘s Android-powered Alpha 680, and these video hands-on of the tablet / netbook from netbooknews.de don’t help. While the apps shown off run smoothly — browser, Maps, Skype, Office, etc. — they also serve as painful reminders that multitasking’s just not gonna work when each app takes up the full screen and can only be opened one at a time. Not that we necessarily expected to do nine things at once with an ARM-based processor, but something tells us we’d be reaching for the Jaunty Jackalope before too long.
