Samsung Galaxy Tab hitting T-Mobile USA on November 10th, $400 on contract

America’s number four carrier just landed a launch date for Samsung’s Froyo-based Galaxy Tab, and sure enough, it’ll be trotting out into the spotlight a full 24 hours before Verizon Wireless and four whole days prior to Sprint. Trouble is, T-Mob’s not being kind enough to dole out a price tag, so there’s no reasonable way for you to compare its offering against the competition. But hey, being first out of the gate, they can’t hold out on us too much longer, eh?

Update: T-Mobile USA’s official Galaxy Tab portal just went live, and guess what? You’ll be shelling out $399.99 for this bad boy… on a two-year data contract. You’ll also be responsible for a $35 activation fee and a $200 early termination charge should you soon realize just what you’ve gotten yourself into.

Acer tablet PC line launching on November 23rd, priced from $299 to $699

Not much more to tell you that you didn’t already pick up from the headline. Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci told Dow Jones Newswire that it will be launching its first line of tablet PCs in New York City on November 23rd, priced from $299 to $699 each. That’s all the man said, leaving us to speculate on the OS (though Android’s been heavily rumored) and whether we’re looking at the launch of an Acer 5-, 7-, or 10-inch tablet (or all of the above) priced with or without carrier subsidies. Still, with Android Gingerbread already on the lawn of the house that Google built we can expect to see a whole slew of Google sanctioned tablets launch before CES 2011 gets underway in January.

ASUS Eee Pad EP101TC getting Tegra 2 treatment ahead of March launch?

More from DigiTimes this morning and its chatty sources within NVIDIA and Taiwanese supply chains. First up is talk that ASUS’ 10-inch Eee Pad — presumably, the Android loving EP101TC said to cost less than $399 — will launch in March of 2011 with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 taking care of the processing duties. DigiTimes‘ sources also remind us that Tegra 2 tablets are on the way from Dell, Samsung, MSI, and Toshiba in addition to smartphones from ASUS, Motorola, and LG. Good to know, but for as long as Tegra 2 has been discussed, we’ve yet to see the SoC ship inside anything worth getting too excited over. And don’t even mention the Boxee Box, they switched to Intel at the last minute, remember? Maybe Dell’s Looking Glass tablet will change all that when it launches any day now.

BlackBerry PlayBook demoed courtesy of RIM’s Mike Lazaridis and Adobe’s Kevin Lynch

RIM has now uploaded the full video of its PlayBook’s brief stint in the limelight during Adobe MAX yesterday, where Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch and none other than Mr. BlackBerry himself, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, take the “professional tablet” through its very first public test drive on the keynote stage. The duo run through an MRI scan viewing app — presumably in an attempt to woo the lucrative medical market — along with the PlayBook’s Air-based video player and browser-embedded Flash player, both of which seem to work pretty well. We also get a quick look at the tablet’s multitasking cards, where we see that apps continue to function even from within their card views; it looks pretty nice, but at a glance, it doesn’t do any tricks webOS wasn’t pulling off a year ago.

Interestingly, the edited video has a number of cuts — some seem like harmless attempts to cut out boring parts, but there are a couple suspicious ones where we suspect something unsavory happened on the PlayBook or it ran just a little slower than RIM would’ve liked (of course, with the PlayBook’s release still months out, they’ve got plenty of time to tighten that up while they wait for developers to submit their wares in exchange for a free PlayBook of their own). At the end, Lazaridis expertly skirts Lynch’s question of when exactly the device will be released… and he didn’t even need a seasoned PR rep standing next to him to deflect it! Ubuntu 10.10’s multitouch Unity UI demoed on Dell, makes multitasking look easy (video)

Want to see how multitouch works in Maverick Meerkat‘s Unity UI, but don’t have a convertible tablet PC? You’re in luck today, as Ubuntu Developers put together a handy-dandy video of the Ubuntu 10.10 interface running on their very own Dell Latitude XT2‘s dual-digitizer touchscreen. As you’d expect, the $2,400 convertible does a bang-up job as a tablet PC, playing Flash video and OpenGL games with ease, but the uTouch gestures appear to contribute to the overall experience by making window management a relative breeze. But in the immortal words of LeVar Burton, you don’t have to take our word for it — see for yourself right after the break, while we pray for Canonical to reconsider its stance on a dedicated tablet version of Ubuntu.

RIM announces PlayBook simulator and SDK for BlackBerry Tablet OS

We know you’re all partyin’ up a storm at the Adobe MAX conference, but just in case one of you missed it, RIM’s announced the availability of the Adobe AIR SDK for BlackBerry Tablet OS — not to mention a little something called the BlackBerry PlayBook Simulator. Needless to say (but we’ll say it anyways), we’re more than anxious to get our hands on the latter. Unfortunately, it requires Adobe AIR 2.5 to run, while the latest release RIM’s site is offering is 2.0.2. Buzzkill, right? That said, we suggest you keep an eye on the source link if you’re looking to get in on the action yourself. Otherwise, if you’re not willing to go all the way, we have some fine PR explaining matters after the break.

Update: The source link has an active AIR 2.5 toolkit link. Huzzah!

Notion Ink founder claims Adam tablet will go 15+ hours on a charge

The Pixel Qi and Tegra 2-packing Notion Ink Adam has long been one of our favorite pieces of perfectly plausible vaporware, but founder Rohan Shravan’s just made a pretty fantastic claim — he says he’s getting a minimum of 15 hours of battery life from his personal tablet and calculates you’ll get up to twenty with the 24Wh, potentially user-replaceable battery nestled in its frame. While those are the figures for the $498 transflective version of the tablet and not the $399 juice-gulping LCD, they’re still so stellar that they could easily make or break the Adam’s sales depending on their veracity. Oh Rohan, please don’t let us down.

HP Slate 500 Launched Sans webOS

Waiting for that HP webOS to finally take on Apple’s iPad? Looks like you’ll have to keep waiting, for the foreseeable future. HP did, in fact, launch a tablet today–the Slate 500–but in spite of the company’s purchase of Palm and the recent release of webOS 2 and the Palm Pre 2, that ultra dynamic operating system is nowhere to be seen on the thing.

Nope, the HP Slate 500 is a Windows 7 machine–not only that, it’s Windows 7 Professional. Yep–HP is pushing this thing as a business tablet. The company looks to be tackling professionals in fields like education, insurance, and real estate–words that don’t really scream, you know, “sexy” the way an iPad does.

The screen is 8.9 inches, and the device weighs 1.5 pound. Inside you’ll find a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540, a 64GB hard drive, and 2GB of RAM–over in its hands-on, PCMag describes the thing a “zippy.” There’s also a built-in camera and an SD card slot.

There’s no 3G on the thing, but it does feature 802.11b/g/n. The Slate 500 runs $799 and is available. As for the webOS tablet? That’s still coming–at some point next year.

We’d heard the HP Slate finally had a date with destiny (and corporate pocketbooks) sometime this fall, and it’s looking like the device is nigh — a number of boutique online retailers are taking orders for an HP Slate 500, which purportedly comes with an Intel Atom Z540 CPU, 8.9-inch WSVGA LED-backlit screen, 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 64GB solid state drive, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a webcam, a two-cell battery and Windows 7 Professional installed, all for somewhere around the vicinity of $800 to $900. What’s more, CNET‘s just stumbled upon a document that apparently details the same, plus an HP Slate Digital Pen (no doubt for those who abhor sausages) and a rear-facing 3 megapixel camera. We’d chalk up the CNET leaks to old prototype documentation and the e-tailer product listings to wishful thinking if either appeared on their own, but together we have to imagine there’s some sort of wind a’ blowing.

Why ‘Gorilla Arm Syndrome’ Rules Out Multitouch Notebook Displays

Apple’s new MacBook Air borrows a lot of things from the iPad, including hyperportability and instant-on flash storage. But the Air won’t use an iPad-like touchscreen. Neither will any of Apple’s laptops. That’s because of what designers call “gorilla arm.”

And while Apple points to its own research on this problem, it’s a widely recognized issue that touchscreen researchers have known about for decades.

“We’ve done tons of user testing on this,” Steve Jobs said in Wednesday’s press conference, “and it turns out it doesn’t work. Touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical. It gives great demo, but after a short period of time you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off.”

This why Jobs says Apple’s invested heavily in developing multitouch recognition for its trackpads, both for its laptops, on its current-generation Mighty Mouse and on its new standalone Magic Trackpad.

Avi Greengart of Current Analysis agrees it’s a smart move, borne out of wisdom gathered from watching mobile and desktop users at work.

“Touchscreen on the display is ergonomically terrible for longer interactions,” he says. “So, while touchscreens are popular, Apple clearly took what works and is being judicious on how they are taking ideas from the mobile space to the desktop.”

But Apple didn’t have to do its own user testing. They didn’t even have to look at the success or failure of existing touchscreens in the PC marketplace. Researchers have documented usability problems with vertical touch surfaces for decades.

“Gorilla arm” is a term engineers coined about 30 years ago to describe what happens when people try to use these interfaces for an extended period of time. It’s the touchscreen equivalent of carpal-tunnel syndrome. According to the New Hacker’s Dictionary, “the arm begins to feel sore, cramped and oversized — the operator looks like a gorilla while using the touchscreen and feels like one afterwards.”

According to the NHD, the phenomenon is so well-known that it’s become a stock phrase and cautionary tale well beyond touchscreens: “‘Remember the gorilla arm!’ is shorthand for ‘How is this going to fly in real use?’.” You find references to the “gorilla-arm effect” or “gorilla-arm syndrome” again and again in the scholarly literature on UI research and ergonomics, too.

There are other problems with incorporating touch gestures on laptops, regardless of their orientation. Particularly for a laptop as light as the MacBook Air, continually touching and pressing the screen could tip it over, or at least make it wobble. This is one reason I dislike using touchscreen buttons on cameras and camera phones — without a firm grip, you introduce just the right amount of shake to ruin a photo.

Touchscreens work for extended use on tablets, smartphones and some e-readers because you can grip the screen firmly with both hands, and you have the freedom to shift between horizontal, vertical and diagonal orientations as needed.

On a tablet or smartphone, too, the typing surface and touch surface are almost always on the same plane. Moving back and forth between horizontal typing and vertical multitouch could be as awkward as doing everything on a vertical screen.

This doesn’t mean that anything other than a multitouch trackpad won’t work. As Microsoft Principal Researcher (and multitouch innovator) Bill Buxton says, “Everything is best for something and worst for something else.”

We’ve already seen vertical touchscreens and other interfaces working well when used in short bursts: retail or banking kiosks, digital whiteboards and some technical interfaces. And touchscreen computing is already well-implemented in non-mobile horizontal interfaces, like Microsoft’s Surface. Diagonalized touchscreen surfaces modeled on an architect’s drafting table like Microsoft’s DigiDesk concept are also very promising.

In the near future, we’ll see even more robust implementations of touch and gestural interfaces. But it’s much more complex than just slapping a capacitative touchscreen, however popular they’ve become, into a popular device and hoping that they’ll work together like magic.

Design at this scale, with these stakes, requires close and careful attention to the human body — not just arms, but eyes, hands and posture — and to the context in which devices are used in order to find the best solution in each case.
