ASUS Eee PC T91 confirmed for late May or early June release in the UK

We’ve seen plenty of the ASUS Eee PC T91 ever since its first appearance back at CES in January, but now, according to Electric Pig, the swivel tableted, touchscreen-boasting Eee PC has been confirmed by ASUS for a “late May or early June” release in the UK. Sadly, there’s still no further word (beyond its April appearance at the FCC) for a Stateside release, but the UK model is expected to retail for £449 (about $685) when it launches there. We’ll just have to be patient, we suppose.

At first glance, PeeWee PC’s Pivot Tablet Laptop is a formidable rival to the long-standing OLPC XO. Unfortunately, the lofty price tag puts it in a class of its own, but it’s still a solid machine for those looking to a learn a bit (or just give their kids a wholesome distraction). Debuting today, the three pound convertible tablet boasts a spill and drop-resistant shell, a carry handle, a presumed 10-inch touchscreen display and a 6-cell Li-ion battery. Within, you’ll find a 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, two USB 2.0 ports, a 60GB HDD, 1.3 megapixel camera, Ethernet, WiFi, Windows XP Home, a proprietary security suite to keep kids from picking up a new favorite stalker and ten age appropriate software and game titles. Apple prototyping “iPhone lite” and MacBook Mini / media pad for Verizon?

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s reports of Apple and Verizon dealings comes some tantalizing, but still unconfirmed, new details from BusinessWeek. According to the publication, the gang in Cupertino has prototyped two devices for the carrier. The first one is a smaller, less expensive device that’s been dubbed as “iPhone lite” by someone who’s apparently seen it in person. The other is called a “media pad” (Joggler, anyone?) for music, photos, HD video, and placing calls over WiFi. Details are scant beyond that, and while that pad sounds a lot like an iPod touch to us, we can’t help but wonder if it has something to do with those 10-inch displays that Quanta’s rumored to be manufacturing. Don’t put too much stock into this, as the reports could end up being all for naught, but one thing’s for sure: you can bet the suits at AT&T are keeping a very, very close eye on this. In other, even sketchier and likely unrelated rumors, a listing for “MacBookMini” has popped up in Adium’s statistics. While we wouldn’t normally think anything of this — as TUAW correctly notes, anyone can edit their computer IDs — it was from these pages that we first heard the name MacBook Air. Chances are this is nothing, but with all this talk of 10-inch screens and media pads, it kind of makes you wonder.

Skytone’s Alpha 680 tablet, Android interface gets underwhelming hands-on treatment

We’re still not sold on the $250 price tag for Skytone‘s Android-powered Alpha 680, and these video hands-on of the tablet / netbook from netbooknews.de don’t help. While the apps shown off run smoothly — browser, Maps, Skype, Office, etc. — they also serve as painful reminders that multitasking’s just not gonna work when each app takes up the full screen and can only be opened one at a time. Not that we necessarily expected to do nine things at once with an ARM-based processor, but something tells us we’d be reaching for the Jaunty Jackalope before too long. Viliv S5 reviewed, is mostly smiles with good video playback

You’ve seen its introduction, its unboxing — in two different languages, no less — and maybe even fancied the pre-order page. Now Pocketables has what appears to be one of the first full-fledged review of the Viliv S5, and the verdict? It’s quite a sturdy and well-built MID, with surprisingly good battery life and video performance from the Intel Atom Z520 processor (same one as found in the Vaio P). The virtual keyboard leaves a lot to be desired for, and it’s a shame to hear the joystick’s mouse functionality is limited to four directions, but despite these complaints and a $599 price tag, the conclusion is still a overwhelmingly positive for those who like the form factor. Viliv S5 pre-order details firm up: $599 and it’s yours May 8th

It’s been a long and winding road filled with unboxings, impressions, and comparisons, but it looks like the last few details surrounding the U.S. release of Viliv’s Atom-powered S5 MID have now finally been firmed up. According to retailer Dynamism, the device will be available for pre-order on April 27th (at 1PM Eastern) for just $599, or $50 less than previously expected, with the first orders expected to ship on May 8th. Better still, those that pre-order the S5 will also get a free spare battery, a car kit, and a leather pouch, which Dynamism says is a $135 value. No word on the number of units available in that initial batch but, if the Hong Kong and Korean releases are any indication, they could sell out pretty quickly.

Always Innovating’s half-finished online store lists Touch Book tablet in stock, $99 keyboard sold separately

Remember Always Innovative’s Touch Book? Looks like the company’s gearing up to start selling the rather unique netbook / removable tablet hybrid, as noted by its under construction X-Cart powered online store. Four entries are currently listed — two for the Touch Book tablet and two for the keyboard, both available in grey and red and with 100 units in stock for each. Prices were $299 for the tablet and $99 for keyboard and, yeah, we get the feeling you’ll want to buy both for the full experience. No indication of an actual ship date. Try as we might, we couldn’t manage to check out with our order, but perhaps we’ll get some news shortly.

Update: We’ve been contacted by Always Innovating, who confirmed that the store was viewable by way of an error, and that the Touch Book can still be pre-ordered for summer shipping. The company also confirmed that the keyboard will be available separately for $99, the tablet for $299, with the whole deal going for $399.

Gigabyte T1028 netbook / tablet gets the hands-on treatment

We’ve already seen Gigabyte’s T1028 netbook / tablet up close, and even gotten a glimpse of the user manual, but the folks at UMPC Portal have now finally come though with a proper hands-on of the device, which looks to confirm that it does indeed deliver the goods, if not quite justify its $600+ price tag. What’s more, as welcome as that swiveling touchscreen is, it looks like it’s the little touches that really push this one over the edge, including an all too often omitted ExpressCard slot, built-in 3G, 802.11n WiFi, some actually accessible upgrade options, and an apparently faster than usual 2.5-inch hard drive. Viliv S5 unboxed and handled in Hong Kong

We’ve seen plenty of Viliv’s S5 tablet PC, but the fine folks of Engadget Chinese have scored some precious unboxing time with the little dude, and it’s looking pretty great. The XP-running MID has a 4.8-inch touchscreen, a 60GB hard disk, an Intel Silverthorne-class 1.33GHz Z520 CPU, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, and 1GB of memory. It’s available in Korea now, though it appears to have missed its European / U.S. shipping dates at the end of March — but we’ll let you know when we start seeing these babies hit the streets. They’re supposed to be priced at $649 when they do become available in the States. There are a few more shots after the break, but hit the read link for the entire, stunningly awesome set.

Gigabyte posts T1028 TouchNote product page, user manual

Gigabyte’s T1028 TouchNote has been cooking on the back burner for weeks now. After we first spotted it lookin’ pretty at CeBIT, the tablet / netbook hybrid has since landed in the FCC’s database and has now shown up officially on the company’s website. The formal specifications list explains that the 10.1-inch machine will boast a swiveling touch panel (LED-backlit), a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 92 percent full-sized keyboard, embedded HSDPA module, a 2.5-inch 160GB SATA HDD, Bluetooth 2.1, 1.3 megapixel camera, Ethernet, 4-cell battery, WiFi and twin 1.5-watt speakers. Optional equipment includes an Atom N280 CPU, WiMAX module, 1,366 x 768 resolution panel (at least according to the user manual) and a more longevous a 6-cell Li-ion. Now, give us a price and ship date and we’ll be pleased as punch.
