Motorola expects Android 2.2 update to hit Droid ‘in the near future’

Hearing Google say that Android 2.2 would be filtering out to the Nexus One in short order was no huge shock — after all, it’s Google’s first smartphone. But for those who purchased Motorola’s first heavy-hitter since the RAZR, it looks as if they’ll be close behind in enjoying the spoils. According to a Motorola spokesperson quoted at Slashgear (full statement is past the break), the company is expecting the original Droid to get Android 2.2 “in the near future,” though he / she wouldn’t go so far as to provide specifics beyond that. Better still, the same person stated that Motorola is excited about Froyo in general, and it’s “looking forward to integrating it on [the firm’s] Android-based devices as [the software] is made available.” We hate to read too deeply into anything, but “devices” sure gets our digits tingling.

[Thanks, Alex]

Intel Core i5-580M speeding toward a fall release at 2.66GHz?

The Core i5-540M is still quite rare on the ground, but we’re hearing word that Intel is already prepping the assembly line for its successor. A new Core i5-580M has been dug up by the sleuths at Notebook Italia, who say it’ll run at a default 2.66GHz and ramp up to 3.33GHz via Turbo Boost when needed. Those numbers compare favorably to the 2.53GHz and 3.06GHz of the 540M, and if Intel and company get their timing right, the 580M should be stealing some of that Core i7 thunder just in time for the back to school shopping rush. Won’t hear any complaining from us if that turns out to be the case.

HTC Evo 4G rooted in record time (video)

We’re still a good dozen days away from its public release, but the Evo 4G has already been given a rooting makeover. Google dished out Evo handsets to all the lucky (so lucky!) attendees of its blowout I/O 2010 event, and a trio of those visitors rolled up their sleeves and decided to get down and intimate with the phone over the weekend. The product of their labor is at this stage just a few screenshots and a blurry video after the break, but fear not, we’re sure details of the hack will be forthcoming promptly.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Nokia N8 benchmarked against N97, makes it look old and busted

Nokia’s new hotness, the N8, is starting our week off in fine style. Finest Fones, what looks to be a Symbian-only mobile news site, is reporting its own tests done with the handset that show it comfortably outpacing its predecessor. Of course, in these fog of war-obscured times (before proper hardware is dished out), we can’t really be sure of the veracity of what we read, but Symbian^3‘s newfound ability to exploit graphics hardware seems to be paying off relative to the more primordial ways of the S60 5th software on the N97. The intrepid investigators found a 180 percent performance delta between the two phones in Speedy Go! tests, while the N8 ran through a cycle of FPC bench 3D with perfect 60fps scores each and every time. We won’t be convinced by the purported 680MHz CPU inside till we test it out for ourselves with a load of widget-heavy homescreens, but early signs seem to be encouraging.

Amazon’s Kindle 2.5 software update begins to roll out

We knew it was destined for a late-May release, and it looks as if Amazon’s going to make its deadline after all. Following a preview of the 2.5 software update a few weeks back, we’ve got pictorial proof that the new code is being pushed out as we speak. This particular unit is a Kindle DX, and it’s not hesitant in showing off the social networking features we were promised. Feel free to poke around in the gallery below, and then fire up your own Kindle to see if you’ve received an OTA surprise. Let us know either way in comments below, won’tcha?

[Thanks, Andreas]

Google Prepares Measure Map for Re-launch

This article was written on April 30, 2008 by CyberNet.

Some of you may remember a service called Measure Map from back in 2005. It was free and provided bloggers with stats for their blogs. There are certain stats that are more useful to bloggers than others which is why Measure Map was so useful. On their site they list some of the benefits of using the service like “easily navigate the numbers that matter,” or “track links to see who sends you traffic.” Things were going along pretty nicely for them and continued that way when Google acquired them on February 14, 2006. Once they became a part of Google though, not a peep was heard from them.

Now TechCrunch is reporting that Google is ready to relaunch Measure Map and that it has been completely rebuilt from the ground up. Michael Arrington said he recently received an email that was sent to the early Measure Map users which explains the changes. In a nutshell, they explained what they’ve been doing in the time since they got acquired saying, “We got acquired by Google, we redesigned their Analytics app, and we’ve since rebuilt Measure Map from the ground up.”

Measure Map is one great example of how not all of the companies that get acquired by Google and then fade away are really gone forever. If you were one of the people who was an original tester of Measure Map, you should have received a message explaining how you’ll need a Google Analytics account to use the new version at Google. Without trying it ourselves, we’re really curious as to what kinds of changes they made and how it will differ from Analytics which many bloggers already use.

Vending Machines: Coined Consumerism gets more press

vending-machines-coined-consumerism-japan

We mentioned back in March about my interview in the newly-released Vending Machines: Coined Consumerism book by Christopher Salyers.

Over the weekend, I was also pleasantly surprised to find the book reviewed by Radley Balko, the man behind The Agitator blog, in the upcoming issue of Reason magazine. Being a daily reader of The Agitator and on/off reader of Reason since my teens, it was great to see both the book and myself mentioned, though I have to say that I’m not a “vending machine marketing executive”. The book even got some coverage at Fast Company, so congrats to Christopher for the great press!
