Toshiba NB205 netbook now available to order

We’ve seen this one up close and reviewed, but it looks like you can now finally get your hands on Toshiba’s new NB205 netbook, which certainly makes an admirable attempt at standing out from the netbook pack. While there’s a low-end, black-only model available with a standard keyboard and cheaper materials for $349, the real stand-out is the $399 model available in your choice of four different colors, which adds a higher quality chassis and a chiclet-style keyboard that has earned rave reviews from some. Otherwise, you can expect the usual Atom N280 processor on each, along with 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display, and a standard six-cell battery that promises an impressive nine hours of use.

Toshiba Brings Total Backup to Hard Drives

Toshiba_Backup.jpgToday Toshiba released their latest flock of external USB hard drives to the market. Targeted at complete backup, the 500GB ($149.99 MSRP) and 320GB ($119.99 MSRP) capacity drives have the space for the files on your laptop or desktop.

The Toshiba Portable Hard Drives come with both Mac and Windows software, including a Drive Space Alert that tells you that your drive is getting full, and 256-bit software based encryption. The drives come with NTI Backup Now EZ for Windows PCs, which can either backup the whole hard drive for disaster recovery, or can be set to search for and backup just your personal files (Outlook, photos, videos, etc.) which is quicker. The drives come with NTI Shadow 4 for Mac, which can search for and backup files. Toshiba’s hard drives support Time Machine built into Mac OS X 10.5+ for total backup.

The drives are available today from www.toshibadirect.com and through major retailers and online outlets. The drives are available in an array of color choices, such as Vivid White, Liquid Blue, Komodo Green and Rocket Red.

Nanometer wars heat up, Toshiba and Intel enter unofficial race

Think the megapixel race is bad? Now we’ve another to worry about, with both Toshiba and Intel hastily approaching 0.01nm technology in order to make chips faster, more nimble and smaller. According to undisclosed sources at Digitimes, Intel has actually canned production plans for its 45nm Havendale processors, which were originally slated to slip into machines later this year. The cause? It’s heading straight to 32nm, reportedly hoping to ship its Clarkdale line in Q1 2010 with entry-level prices ranging from $60 to $190. In related news, Toshiba is joining the likes of IBM, Samsung and Globalfoundries in an effort to dish out chips based on 28nm process technology. Needless to say, the move is being made in an effort to “stay relevant in an area dominated by the likes of Intel Corp and Texas Instruments.” Now, if only we could get one of these potent, low-power chips inside of a netbook, we’d be pleased as punch.

Toshiba’s TG01 running Snapdragon launched as T-01A in Japan

One of the hottest pieces of gear this year just made its way to retail in Japan. Less than a centimeter thick, the NTT DoCoMo T-01A is the same TG01 device revealed by Toshiba back in February running Qualcomm’s ultra-fast 1GHz Snapdragon chipset. As such, our far east brethren can lay claim to that 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) resistive touchscreen display; HSDPA, GPS, and WiFi radios; and Toshiba’s custom-built UI meant to mask its Windows Mobile 6.1 core with a bit of Rothko misdirection. And now that Toshiba’s home country of Japan is all set, we hope to see the TG01 make its launch debute in Europe and beyond.

NEC and Toshiba hop on IBM’s Semiconductor Alliance train for the ride to 28nm

NEC and Toshiba hop on IBM's Semiconductor Alliance train for the ride to 28nmIBM seems seriously intent to beat Intel to the tiny, 28nm processor punch, and has enlisted even more help to get there first. After securing deals with Samsung, Globalfoundries, and a few other merry chipmakers in April, NEC and Toshiba are now joining in on the Semiconductor Alliance fun to create next-generation processors before the biggest name in current-generation processors. Goals are smaller footprints, lower power consumption, and of course greater performance. Mind you, that greater performance is still likely two years away from anything we can hope to buy.

Toshiba NB205 netbook reviewed, loved

We already knew the cats at Laptop were into the Toshiba NB205 / Dynabook UX netbook’s aesthetic, and now they’re back with a full review saying it “breaks the mold.” Yep, even though it’s packing the same 1.6GHz Atom internals as every other XP netbook out there, it’s apparently a step above, with a tight design, kickin’ keyboard, and 8.5 hours of battery life for $399. Of course, that’s in contrast to some other reviews of the Dynabook UX we’ve seen, which called the keyboard “cramped,” but it certainly seems like the NB205 is at least worth a look for potential netbook shoppers not put off by the upcoming CULV explosion.

Toshiba ships REGZA ZV650 and SV670 HDTVs

If you’re not down with waiting for Toshiba’s internet-connected range of HDTVs — which, by the way, should be out before the dawn of 2010 — here’s a bit of excellent news: the REGZA ZV650 and SV670 series are now shipping. Both of the sets were initially announced way back at CES, and the latter of the two is Tosh’s first-ever LED-backlit HDTV. Said set also packs local dimming, ClearScan 240 dejudder technology, PixelPure 5G 14-bit video processing and that questionably useful Resolution+ system. There’s also a USB socket, four HDMI connectors, IR pass-through, a PC input and REGZA-LINK (HDMI-CEC). As for the other guys (yeah, there’s more), head on past the break and take notes on the ones relevant to your interests.
