Toshiba’s leaked product roadmap gets us hot, extra bothered by fuel-cell powered L01 MID

If the roadmap posted after the break is to be believed (and we think it is) then Toshiba is set to capture a lot of attention with its Snapdragon-based handhelds over the coming year. Techblog.gr has what it claims to be the Toshiba Device Roadmap through 2010. They’ve shown us a PowerPoint sample off-line that seems to support the claim. Of course, this isn’t the first time Tosh has leaked an entire product cycle and the named devices align nicely with some of the prototypes Toshiba was showing-off at CES in January (see gallery below). Toshiba was already off to a good start in 2009 with its incredibly thin 4.1-inch TG01 running atop Qualcomm’s snapdragon platform. It just gets better from there. First we’ve got the TG02 (launching in Q4) update to the TG01 that adds IPX4 water resistance without changing the specs or the dimensions. The TG03 ups the ante again with the inclusion of a 3-channel speaker for a better video experience.

Also in Q4, Tosh looks ready to launch a 15-mm QWERTY slider version of the 9.9-mm TG01 with new capacitive (!) touchscreen called the K01. All other specs look unchanged including WinMo 6.5. Next is the K02 clamshell with primary 3.5-inch WVGA display and QWERTY on the inside coupled with a secondary LCD and 10-key on-screen keypad on the outside. The K02 features a resistive touchscreen, HSPA data, and same QSD8x50 chipset found in the TG01 (and all the other devices on this roadmap). Last, but by no means least, is the 7-inch L01 looking every bit the love-child of a Nokia N800 and HTC Advantage. The very same device that was shown powered by a DMFC (fuel cell) at CES in January. Interesting since Toshiba has promised a consumer device powered by a fuel cell before March of 2010. Unfortunately, it’s limited to WinMo 6.5 (with a hint of a Windows Mobile 7 in 2010) and the same WVGA resolution seen on the smaller screens when it launches. Assuming the leak is true, of course.

Toshiba’s Satellite Pro S300-EZ2521 is as bland as they come

Ready for one more excuse to snooze through hump day? Here you go. Toshiba‘s Satellite Pro S300-EZ2521, obviously the latest in its growing S300 line, is about as perfectly average as a 15.4-inch laptop can be. We’re talking a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB (5400RPM) hard drive, SuperMulti DVD burner, WXGA resolution panel, GMA 4500MHD graphics, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a built-in webcam. Furthermore, the actual enclosure just screams “Designed For Office Cubes,” and while we don’t have confirmation just yet, we’d wager that the 40 metric tons of bloatware would further substantiate that claim. There’s no mention of a price, but those in the market for a strictly-business machine should find it shipping any day now.

Toshiba matches prices, ship dates to LED backlit REGZA LCDs in Japan

Toshiba is back and ready to make good on some of the higher end HDTVs promised at CES, after showing off the energy efficient C8000 REGZA LCDs, it’s time for the 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio local dimming LED backlit ZX8000 (labeled SV670 in the U.S.) series. These also pack the latest edition of Super Resolution+ upconverting, ClearScan 240Hz motion and fifth generation Pixel Pure image processing. We’ve heard those picture quality claims and seen the (sometimes controversial) results before, but a few features anyone can appreciate are InstaPort HDMI for lagless switching between inputs and AutoView calibration for room lighting conditions. Add-on hard disk drives are also available, and the ZX8000 models are expected in late June / early July for 46- and 55-inch models topping out around 600,000 ($5,944.) Willing to live without LED backlighting, 240Hz or other bullet points? The ZH8000, Z8000 and H8000 models are ready and waiting for appropriately lower prices.

Toshiba Releases SDP93S: Sleek, Attractive DVD Player

ToshibaSDP93S.jpg

Toshiba announced this attractive, attractively slim DVD player at CES, and now it’s come to market. The SDP93S offers a pearlescent high-gloss finish, a 9-inch widescreen display (800 by 480 pixels) and dual headphone jacks, perfect for sharing. I also like that the screen swivels 180 degrees.

Besides movies, the SDP93S can play MP3s or display JPGs from discs or SD cards, and it’s DivX Home Theater certified. The included battery pack is good for 5 hours of playback time, which should be enough to get to Grandma’s house and back again. Pick one up for $229.99.

Toshiba to buy Panasonic’s shares in LCD joint venture

Around seven years after it was originally established, Toshiba has decided it best to stop waiting for Panasonic’s input on decisions regarding Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Company. If all goes to plan, Toshiba — which currently owns a 60 percent stake in the joint venture — will buy out Panasonic’s 40 percent stake on April 28th. For those unaware, the venture was responsible for developing, manufacturing and selling LCDs and OLEDs, most of which were classified as “small to medium-sized.” After the share transfer is finalized, TMD will change its name to Toshiba Mobile Display Company, and according to the jointly-issued release, it’ll allow Tosh to “further accelerate decision-making and promote comprehensive restructuring of TMD’s business.” The consumer takeaway here? “Looking to the future, TMD aims to establish OLEDs as an engine for growth and to enhance its display business in the medium- to long-term.” Boom.

Intel rated leading chip manufacturer again, AMD slips out of top ten

Intel rated leading chip manufacturer again, AMD slips out of top ten

This economic crisis has been tough for nearly every business worldwide, perhaps best evidenced by the number of corporate spats we’ve seen develop lately as everyone gets more and more protective of their respective turfs. While Intel and NVIDIA have lately been engaged in an epic war of PowerPoint presentations, fewer disputes have been bigger or longer-running than the one between Intel and its more direct competition, AMD. That “us inside” company just earned some bragging rights, being named the biggest processor manufacturer in the world again by iSuppli, with a 13.1 percent global market share. AMD, which came in tenth last year, dropped down to the number twelve position in 2008 after its revenue declined 7.8 percent compared to 2007. News was also bad for Texas Instruments, which dropped a position largely thanks to the success of mobile processors from Toshiba and Qualcomm. Don’t be so glum, TI, maybe successes from Russell Crowe’s favorite flavor of pico projector will make up for the difference.

Cheap Geek: Archos Media Player, wiRevo Bluetooth Adapter, Toshiba Laptop and HP Printer

archos.jpg

Before most of us make a purchase, the question “Do I really need this?” comes into play. The answer could be yes, but you can mull that over while checking out these bargains. Here are Gearlog’s deals for Wednesday, March 11:

1. Amazon.com has a hell of a deal on the 30GB Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player. Normally $299.99, today, the Archos is just $159.99. You can record TV shows, stream and watch videos from your PC, and download movies and music directly. The deal ends today, so move fast.

2. Today’s deal at sellout.woot is the wiRevo A100 Stereo Bluetooth Adapter for iPod and iPhone. Originally with a list price of $99.99, the cheapest I’ve seen it is $19.99, but today’s deal brings it down to $9.99. The adapter allows you to stream audio from an iPod to a Bluetooth stereo headset so you can listen to music wirelessly from your iPod or iPhone.

3. Looking for an inexpensive laptop? The Toshiba Satellite AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core 2.0GHz 15.4-inch notebook is on sale at OnSale.com for only $449.99 after a mail-in rebate of $50 for the notebook. But that’s not all, you can also get a HP Deskjet Color Inkjet Printer in the $450 bundle. The printer comes with a $70 mail-in rebate as well, saving you $120 off the total price. Both rebates expire March 28. [Via Bargainist.com]

Toshiba’s TG01 brings glück to Germany with O2 exclusivity

Toshiba’s TG01 and its surprisingly awesome color bar-centric UI will soon be saying “guten tag” to its German friends. O2’s announced that it’ll be the exclusive carrier for the phone in Deutschland and will launch it sometime this summer, with mum being the word currently on price. So far it’s the only TG01 launch we’ve heard about on this or any other planet, but we’d reckon a few more carriers will be chiming in soon to pick up the device for their respective countries.

Toshiba shows off 32nm NAND flash chips, promises to go smaller

32nm NAND flash memory may not seem like a huge leap over some of the current 34nm chips out there, but Toshiba seems to be able to appreciate the little things in life, and it’s certainly found plenty to boast about with its latest chips here. Perhaps most notably, the company apparently didn’t make any major changes from its previous 43nm chips in terms of device structure, with the exception of one “major improvement” to the circuit that was made to overcome the “extremely small” write margin. The new 32nm chips also pack the same 32-gigabit (or 4GB) capacity as those aforementioned 34nm chips, which should let folks cram a bit more storage into the same small space. Better still, Toshiba says volume production of the chips should begin as soon as September of this year, and it’s apparently already aiming to mass produce some chips in the 20 to 30nm range by late 2010 or 2011.
