Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic finally up for grabs Stateside

There was a bit of a false alarm at the flagship stores yesterday — Nokia’s New York and Chicago stores got inventory, but didn’t start selling the 5800 right away, causing much anguish in the hearts of American plectrum lovers and our very own Chris Ziegler. Well, all has been rectified, and now you can pick up Nokia’s touchscreen pioneer, the 5800 XpressMusic, for $399, unlocked and unsubsidized. If you aren’t so much into retail stores you can head to Nokia’s online store, though the phone is still inexplicably listed as “pre-order” there — we’re sure things will be rectified soon enough.

Kindle 3 rumor with touchscreen 8.5 x 11-inch display returns

Now that the Kindle 2 is out, it’s time to get back onto the Kindle rumor mill. You might recall that in addition to the early leaks of the device that become the Kindle 2, a bigger screened Kindle mimicking an 8.5 x 11-inch sheet of paper for students was rumored. According to DigiTimes‘ sources apparently within Prime View International (PVI), the makers of the Kindle’s electrophoretic display (EPD), Amazon’s next Kindle will launch by the end of this year and will be “larger in size and equipped with touch functions.” Of course, that’s no big stretch to the imagination — Plastic Logic has been kicking around its 8.5 x 11-inch touchscreen eBook reader (‘Shopped with a Kindle logo above) for months now with a plan to launch in 2010. Let’s just see if Amazon can get this out in time for the back to school selling season.

Hyundai’s MB-490i Dolphin cellphone is ridiculously clever

You know, when we first read the image-less text describing Hyundai’s dolphin-shaped cellphone, our instinctual, caffeine-injected reflex was to launch into an angst-ridden assault on the MB-490i. Then we saw the pictures and, well, dammit, we kind of like it. Somehow Hyundai managed to make the aquatic scroll-wheel on the front mirrored by cascading waves of aluminum along the backside work. Even the pale blue eyeball on the side comes across as tasteful without kitsch. Spec-wise, we’re looking at a 240 x 400 touchscreen display augmented by a swipeable touchscreen surface below, a 2.0 megapixel camera (no flash), Yamaha speaker, Bluetooth, and a €250 price tag when it launches in May. Check the pictures after the break and sound-off in the comments with your opinion.

Video: ASU’s touch-screen ePaper display evokes the future from the past

With the Kindle back in the news, everyone’s interested in showing off their E-Ink displays. Here we have the latest video from Arizona State University’s Flexible Display Center. Their new bendy display is touch-sensitive (stylus or finger) and makes us long for Apple’s old Newton for some reason. Check the video after the break to see why.

Foam-infused Impress DIS.PLAY encourages touching

Move over Surface, we just found our next tabletop display. The aptly named DIS.PLAY beautifully merges the functionality of a touch panel with the allure of dimly-lit scenarios, and the inclusion of memory foam just makes it all the more sweet. In one usage scenario, we’re told that objects could be put into motion with sound, and when a certain “shape” is mashed and deformed, the respective audio would bend along with it. Another instance showcased 3D modeling that could be varied by simply twisting the hand or intensifying a finger press. Check the demonstration video after the break, and grab your Tempur-Pedic pillow if you’re looking to play along.

Rubik’s TouchCube hands-on and video

We just stopped by TechnoSource’s booth at the Toy Fair to check out its just-announced Rubik’s TouchCube, a fully touch-sensitive update on the old classic Rubik’s Cube. The new model boasts a few features the old one did not (besides the lights and touchscreen), namely undo and hint options if you get stumped. Each of its six sides are touch-sensitive, and the cube’s got an internal accelerometer so that it only recognizes the touching going on on the top side of the cube. It also remembers your place even if you turn it off — great for those of us who will likely spend years trying to solve it just once. The Rubik’s TouchCube is going to hit shelves this fall for $149.99. Check the gallery and video demo after the break

Leaked Samsung M7600 phone sports Bang & Olufsen sound, Helio looks

We don’t know exactly where this one came from… but these leaked photos appear to be of an Ocean-esque Samsung M7600. Here’s what we know about it, spec-wise: it’s an HSDPA phone which will have a 3 megapixel camera, GPS, a 2.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, and yes, a Bang & Olufsen amplifier. We understand that it’ll also sport some kind of of DJ scratching app — which should make your nightlife way more interesting — and that it’s supposedly set to appear sometime in May of this year (though we’d be surprised if we don’t see more of it at MWC). Check a few more shots after the break, and hit the read link to see the device in all its glory.

Windows 7 multitouch: it’s a gimmick (for now)

We’ve spent some time with Windows 7 Beta‘s new touch and multitouch features this week, and came away largely disappointed. It’s not that they don’t work, at least on occasion, it’s that they don’t really provide a comprehensive or pleasurable method for using a computer. The primary enhancements to the OS that really make touch usage possible include a taller taskbar, pinch to zoom and tap-and-drag scrolling. There’s a fancy new onscreen keyboard that’s actually usable, and those quick-swipe gestures from Vista remain for forward, back, copy, paste, undo and redo.

Samsung NC10 netbook touchscreen hack caught on film

Of all the DIY touchscreen projects we’ve come across lately, this is certainly one of them. The kids over at Netbook Mag have got their hands on the stately Samsung NC10 and were kind enough to put together a full blown, step-by-step guide to replacing its tired, non-touch responsive display with an exciting, new fashioned touchscreen. And if that weren’t enough, there’s a video of the software drivers being installed — with a cool, vintage 1994 Euro-rave soundtrack. How great is that? Check it after the break.

Panasonic’s Toughbook 52 upgraded, shows its touchier side

After watching its Toughbook 19 and 30 siblings get a makeover, Panasonic’s CF-52 wasn’t about to miss out on all the fun. The semi-rugged laptop has a few new tricks up its armored sleeve, chief among them an optional 13.3-inch XGA touchscreen with integrated stylus holder, dual overhead keyboard light, and Intel GM45 video controller. If you’re not the touchy-feely type, the 15.4-incher is still around, swapping tactile interface for WUXGA resolution and an ATI Radeon HD 3650. Both models sport Intel Core 2 Duos with vPro technology, 2-4 GB DDR2 RAM, Bluetooth and 160GB HDD. Look for these babies to hit retail shelves — and still work — later this month for an estimated starting price of £1851 ($2677).
