Product placement gets a logo of its own, turns the world inside out

So the UK is finally catching up with the fine money-grubbing nations of this world and allowing product placement in British-made TV programming, starting from next Monday, February 28th. Advertising embedded in internationally sourced films and shows has long been tolerated as a necessary evil within the Queen’s realm, but now that the telecoms regulator Ofcom is opening up locally farmed TV content to the blight of commercialization, it’s come up with a suitably austere logo to warn us of its dangers. Basically, any future episodes of Hollyoaks that may contain a “stray” Diet Coke or Nokia N8 within the frame will be preceded by the above P placed within a P, which will prep you for the pernicious potentiality that the programming you are perusing may provoke you into purchasing new property. Capiche?

Sony Ericsson breaks out white Xperia Play, makes it an O2 exclusive in the UK

We’ll confess, we did see Sony Ericsson execs flashing white Xperia Play handsets during the company’s MWC 2011 press event, but curiously enough none of those made their way to the demo areas. Now we’ve finally got ourselves some fully fleshed out press shots, along with the news that O2 will be the sole carrier for this alabaster gaming smartphone in the UK. Other markets have yet to announce availability of the white Xperia Play, but you’ll know more just as soon as we do. Skip past the break to see how the front end looks.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Vodafone UK lands Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 exclusive launch

We reported yesterday that Vodafone customers would be the first to get their hands on the lightweight 10.1-inch tablet, and now we’re getting word via Twitter that Vodafone UK will carry the Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 exclusively in Britain, at least to start. Thus far, that’s all she wrote — Vodafone’s tweet ends with “More info Coming soon!” but they’ve yet to follow up. So there’s still no confirmation of a solid release date — we’ve heard March for Asia and Europe — or pricing, and Americans eagerly awaiting the tablet’s Stateside debut have been left out in the cold, but at least our British friends will know where to go when the slim slate makes it to market.

[Thanks, Chris W.]

Nokia’s Capital Markets Day is tomorrow, and we’ll be there live!

February 11th, 2011. It looks set to be a day to remember in the grand history of that titan of the mobile industry, Nokia Corporation. Its fearless new leader has been trumpeting the need for change both in public appearances and in the private corridors of Espoo, and tomorrow he gets the stage all to himself, having been handed the keys and told to pick a direction in which to drive. Will he steer Finland’s proudest export into the warm embrace of Microsoft and its developing Windows Phone 7 platform? Will he respond to being described as the orchestrator of a turkey sandwich? Or will he be his usual understated self and lay out a sensible roadmap for righting the wrongs of Nokia’s recent past? If we’re lucky, he’ll do all three tomorrow morning. The show gets started early, at 10AM GMT, but whether you’re staying up late or getting up early, we don’t expect you to miss a moment of it.

Inq Cloud Touch preview

We can’t accuse Inq of having the best timing in the world — the company announced its new Facebook-centric Cloud Touch and Cloud Q phones at about the same time that HP was busy blowing minds with its new webOS range in San Francisco — but at least that gave us an excuse to get out of the Engadget bunker this morning and go check out some new gear. We’ve gotten to grips with the 3.5-inch touchscreen-equipped Cloud Touch and have broken down our first impressions of the device for you after the break. Aside from Facebook, Inq has chosen to integrate Spotify Premium into this phone along with Fluency, the typing prediction engine that powers SwiftKey. The two serve as significant upgrades on the default media player and keyboard software, respectively, and add a nice sprinkling of value to a phone that’s already expected to go easy on the wallet. The gallery below will illustrate anything else you may need or want to know, although you’ll have to check out the video to see the multifunctional unlock screen and Facebook widgetry in action.

INQ launches Facebook-focused Cloud Touch and Cloud Q phones

We’ve been hearing a fair bit of buzz about INQ and Facebook getting all cozy-like and creating a Facebook phone. Well, that’s only half right: INQ has made its first Android 2.2 device, really focused on Facebook integration, and seem to have really nailed it. The two devices are the INQ Cloud Touch (pictured above) and a QWERTY device with exactly the same specs — but, with a QWERTY keypad, of course — named the Cloud Q. Features include triband HSPA for the European folks, 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, all manner of mail support including Exchange, what appears to be legendary Facebook support, and Spotify onboard as the de facto music app with a dedicated key.

INQ’s two Cloud devices are apparently the first mobiles to use the Facebook Social Graph API, which will see all your most important Facebook content appear on your set’s homescreen. Another bonus in here is the keyboard tech — based on SwiftKey — which will not only predict what word you’re typing, but what words you may type based on some AI wizardry, science, and your writing tendencies. The Cloud Touch is set to launch in April at Carphone Warehouse and BestBuy in the UK with the Cloud Q landing sometime in Q3. We’re just about wheels-up for Barcelona to check out the haps at MWC next week, and you can be sure we’ll be all over these sets as soon as we land.

UK Government Department Cuts Emissions By 20%

Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).jpeg

The UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change had a plan: to cut its carbon emissions by 10 percent in 2010. And not only was the plan a success, the government department actually doubled its goal, reducing emissions by 20 percent.

“We have saved 547 tonnes [of carbon] throughout the year, the equivalent weight of five jumbo jets,” department head Chris Huhne told the Guardian. “But this is just the start. Having demonstrated that it can be done we are working with other government departments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent across the entire government estate by May 2011.”

Changes made included a switch to laptops for everyone in the department, a new water-heater schedule that cut gas consumption in half, and not heating or cooling the office at night or on weekends when no one is there. The department is also looking into switching its lighting over to LED.

BBC iPlayer app landing on UK iPads this Thursday, US in June

A BBC Interactive Operations Engineer has British hearts all aflutter tonight with a tweet announcing that the iPlayer app for the iPad is ready to roll out this Thursday, February 10th. It’s specific to the tablet for now, so no iPhone, and will only debut in the UK, so no BBC America for you just yet, though this is the first step toward making that cozy dream a reality. Taking the BBC TV catchup service into international waters will be done on the basis of a paid subscription model, which should dissuade all the TV License payers in the UK from revolting, but do bear in mind that this upcoming tablet app will only allow content streaming over WiFi. You’ll be able to browse the iPlayer over 3G, we’re told, but will need to hook up to some roomier wireless pipes to sip the sweet nectar of BBC Entertainment on your iPad (in app form, browser-based options are a whole other matter). Stay tuned for the fully detailed announcement in a couple of days.

O2 UK says it’s getting the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (update: other UK carriers, April launch)

Now that the Xperia Play is finally official ahead of a full unveiling at MWC next week, carriers are ready to hop on the bandwagon — or at least one is: O2 in the UK. Other than a brief tweet, no other details are given at this point, though the quick support of a major European carrier has to be good news for Sony Ericsson considering that device subsidies are no longer a sure thing… and without question, the Play represents something of a Hail Mary for one of the most badly bruised and beaten titans of the wireless industry. Pricing on contract is, of course, a huge open question — as is North American support — but hopefully all will be revealed on the 13th.

[Thanks, Ed]

Update: Pocket-lint says it can “exclusively confirm” that Vodafone will be getting the phone as well, suggesting that Sony Ericsson may not be pursuing exclusivity periods here — at least, not in the UK.

Update 2: Pocket-lint is additionally reporting that Orange and T-Mobile UK (collectively known as Everything Everywhere) are signed up to get it in April, which would put it around the same time as the Xperia Arc. Still no word on what this might mean for North American launches.
