O2’s Galaxy Nexus landing page confirms November availability, forgets to add price

It’s no secret that O2’s set to release its Galaxy Nexus variant come this November, but a recently live landing page on the UK telecom’s website is serving up some extras. As expected, its customers will be unwrapping the 21Mbps HSPA+ version of the device, but sadly, the question remains as to how much it’ll cost. While a leaked Verizon document evidently has this Android 4.0 flagship pegged at $300 on-contract, O2’s left nary a mention about pricing. With a handful of carriers now firmly under this 4.65-incher’s belt, it’s time for others to defrost their Ice Cream Sandwich release plans.

Netflix to expand to UK, Ireland in ‘early 2012,’ looks to challenge Lovefilm

Well it looks like Netflix’s rumored UK launch was a lot more than just a rumor. Today, the company announced that it will indeed expand to the UK and Ireland “in early 2012,” promising to offer unlimited streaming on PCs, tablets and mobile devices at a “low monthly subscription price.” The company didn’t say what that price would be, nor did it offer any details on available content or supported devices, though more details will be announced closer to its launch. We’re also expecting to hear more from Netflix during its Q3 earnings conference call later today, when we should find out about the impact of its recent price hike and Qwikster turnaround. Whether or not its foray into the UK can loosen Lovefilm‘s grip on the domestic market, however, remains to be seen. Full PR after the break.

Sony’s 3D HMD goes exclusive for Harrods, leaves America waiting

Sony’s Personal 3D Viewer’s finally found its way off the showroom floor and on to the shelves of Harrods? That’s right, the dual screen 1280 x 720 0.7-inch OLED sporting headset’ll initially be a limited exclusive to the well-heeled UK retailer, with a general country-wide release set for later this month. US gamers will have to hold out just a few more days until its end of October launch, but if you’re super impatient, there’s always that import option. Think you can shell out for the £800 (about $1,276) price tag? Then plan to pick one up the next time you’re in town to see the Queen.

BBC’s global iPlayer app adds AirPlay streaming, should just be on Apple TV

British expats and international fans of BBC television alike can now stream some Gavin & Stacey to their televisions (past season 1 anyway, which is on Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video), as long as they’re properly equipped. The global iPlayer app for iPad has been updated with AirPlay streaming (those in the UK however, have no such luck so far) so once users update to iOS 5 and buy an Apple TV box, they’re in business. Of course, this would all be much simpler if iPlayer were just available on the Apple TV itself (without XBMC or other hacks), but no one asked us, did they?

UK sets analog TV cutoff for October 2012, finally sees a show after US viewers

It’s not that we’re upset UK viewers get to watch series like Luther, Misfits and Bedlam long before they officially air here (or in the case of Doctor Who, hours), but we are finally glad to know how a story ends before they do. In this case, regulators have decided that after analog broadcasting shutoffs have already taken place across much of the region, the final transmitters will go dark next year. Just as occurred here, the unused spectrum will then be auctioned off, while most TV viewers will survive, whether on digital OTA broadcasts, pay-TV or otherwise. We made it through with only one TV shot dead in cold blood, here’s hoping our counterparts across the Atlantic can handle the changeover as smoothly.

Skype / Rdio co-founder’s Vdio service leaks out, pronunciation confirmed

Where does one go after Rdio? Why, Vdio, of course. GigaOm today got some answers about Skype / Rdio / KaZaA co-founder Janus Friis’s upcoming service. First and most foremost, it’s pronounced “Vee-dee-o.” The service is in closed beta at the moment, and will be first made available in the UK. The service will let users watch TV shows and movies — beyond that, we don’t know much, though the company assures us all that it “think[s] people will love using Vdio.” Fair enough. At present, the service’s homepage is cycling through shots of films like A Clockwork Orange and Ghostbusters and TV shows like Justified and Breaking Bad. Not too shabby.

Virgin Media’s TiVos get updated with Spotify, iOS app support and more

Over in the UK, Virgin Media has given a lucky few (3,500 or so) access to a pilot update for their TiVo DVRs that adds many of the features we’d heard were on the way, plus some extras. Word out of Crawley and Cambridge is that multiroom streaming is enabled, there’s faster performance and an official community post mentions compatibility with TiVo’s iOS apps, BBC iPlayer integration and music streaming from Spotify. A wider rollout is expected before Christmas, for a full list of changes check out the links below.

UK Gov wants opt-in system for adult material, imagine a boot stamping on a trackpad, forever

Looks like Prime Minister David Cameron’s not content with just shuttering the internet during social unrest (whilst condemning others who do the same). He’s declared that four of the UK’s biggest ISPs have entered into an opt-in system for adult material. The move is backed by the Mothers Union but has been flatly denied by the ISPs, who insist they’re offering McAfee parental controls with new signups rather than Government-level web filtering. (Probably a massive let down to those eagerly waiting to delegate their parental responsibilities.) Of course, given the flaky nature of web filtering, any sanguine word that contained an expletive (the word “arsenal”, for example) could be impossible to access until you had an awkward conversation with someone over the phone.

ViewSonic ViewPad 10e coming soon to UK and Netherlands?

Is ViewSonic about to surprise the UK and Netherlands with a new ViewPad? We haven’t heard a single peep about the new tablet until the advert you can see above mysteriously leaked, at which point Viewsonic confirmed to Tablet Test that the device not only exists, but will be coming out “soon.” The ViewPad 10e gets a 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 IPS display (that’s the same size and resolution as the TouchPad and iPad 2’s display), a 1.3 megapixel camera and it’s only 9mm (0.35 inches) thick. We don’t know much about what’s on the inside, except to say it’ll be running Gingerbread solo, rather than the “dual OS” setup of the ViewPad 10pro. There’s nary a release date to be found, but we do know that when it arrives, it’ll set Europeans back to the tune of €250 (about $340).

You didn’t expect the Olympics to land in London without a video game tie-in snapping at its heels, did you? Of course not, but did you expect it to be bundled with a powder-blue console? Here’s the skinny: Nintendo’s Mario & Sonic at the 2012 Olympic Games Limited Edition Pack pairs the outfit’s upcoming Gamecube-free Wii refresh with the ghetto fabulous chromatic pop of the 1970s’ tackiest grooviest tuxedo craze. Like the “Family Edition” bundle that clued us in on the hardware refresh, this package has only been announced for Europe, and there’s still no word on how much either set will cost. Nintendo of Europe says they will be announcing additional bundles later this year, but if you just have to have a matching console for your blue Wiimote, you can pick one up November 18th.
