Airis Praxis Slim Air is one-inch thick, KIRFtastic

Airis is no stranger to the fine art of imitating without getting sued out of existence, and its latest effort — the shamelessly titled Praxis Slim Air — is no exception. It sports a 12-inch display spanning 1366 x 768 pixels, a gig of memory and a 160GB hard drive, and if you think this is the usual prelude to a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, well, you’d be spot on. To be fair, with two USB ports, WiFi, HDMI, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and a choice of Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Linux, this isn’t a terrible proposition in its own right. The big downfall comes with a rated battery runtime of just three hours, but if you’re unfazed by the tethered life, you can grab one in Europe for €399 ($586) this October. Full frontal picture after the break.

Video: UMID shows off faster, cheaper, Windows 7-packing mbook M2

Video: UMID shows off faster, cheaper, Windows 7-packing mbook M2

It seems like just yesterday we were finally welcoming the UMID mbook M1 into the world, kicking and screaming after a rather extended gestation. After all that it wasn’t exactly well received thanks to a high price, a screen that didn’t open far enough, and USB ports that sadly required dongles. UMID is now demoing the completely dongle-free M2, said to be ultimately available with your choice of either a 1.2 or 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor. Memory has been bumped up to 1GB to support Windows 7, the case has been tweaked, the hinge now opens further, and there’s an optical “mouse” integrated into the bezel with a sensor on the right and two tiny mouse buttons on the left. A non-functional version is lovingly caressed after the break, while working models are said to ship before the year is up with prices starting at $499. Let’s hope this one doesn’t follow the same, circuitous path to retail that its predecessor did.

Haier steps out of character, builds ultra-desirable Jian i7 ultra-thin laptop

The last time Haier really wowed us was back in 2007 when the company was peddling its “screen-on-a-stick” laptop tech. Two years later we’ve got this little beauty to drool on: the Jian i7. The 13.4-inch Core 2 Duo ULV laptop is pretty dang thin, weighs 3 pounds, and retails for a mere 6,000 Yuan (about $879 US). Where do we sign up?

ASUS 13.3-inch UL30 gets reviewed, called a cutie pie

We’ve already witnessed the unveiling of ASUS’ largest two UL series laptops, so it’s only fair to pass along an in-depth look at the midget of the bunch. The UL30A was recently taken for a ride over at HotHardware, and while we’ve had our suspicions as to whether Intel’s CULV platform really would provide an incentive for to-be netbook buyers to spend a bit more, it seems as if this ultraportable definitely is worth the extra scratch. Unlike your average Atom-powered netbook, the UL30 could actually handle 720p video like a champ (though 1080p brought it to its knees), and even with Vista taking a toll on its resources, day to day work was found to be surprisingly snappy. At $749 and up, the seductively silver UL30 was found to be a solid buy in its category, but we’re not asking you to take our word for it. Hit that read link for the full writeup, benchmarks and all.

MSI slides out 14-inch Athlon Neo-equipped X410 laptop

MSI’s X-Slim X400 made quite the splash alongside the X340 and X600 earlier this year, but now it’s time for the slighted middle child to get an upgrade. Upstaging both of the aforementioned siblings, the refreshed X410 gets powered by AMD’s Athlon Neo processor and also packs an ATI Radeon X1250 GPU, 14-inch LCD (1,366 x 768), up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 1.3 megapixel camera, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, optional Bluetooth, an HDMI port, an SD card reader and a 320GB or 500GB hard drive. There’s also a pair of USB 2.0 sockets, a VGA output, external DVD writer (or Blu-ray drive, if you’d prefer) and a 4- or 8-cell battery to boot. Per usual, MSI isn’t doling out pricing or release details just yet, but we’re betting a pre-holiday ship date is practically a lock.

ViewSonic VNB132 laptop and VNB102 netbook hit the massage table

If you believe Jon Rubinstein, mobile computing is the future, but if you look at the VNB102’s spec sheet, you’ll find that the future still comes with an Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard disk. Should that still satisfy your humble needs, it’ll cost you $349 with a 3-cell battery or $399 for the 6-cell edition. Now for grown-up people, ViewSonic ditches the glossy casing and throws up a most righteous 13.3-inch 1280 x 800 display, riding atop an SU7300 CULV processor, 2GB RAM and 320GB HDD. For $899, you’ll even get a DVD rewriter, or you can sacrifice it to save a hundred bucks and get an even thinner machine. The VNB132 (pictured) is set to ship with the release of Windows 7, but check the read link below to see it handled today.

Video: 12-inch MSI Wind U210 gets a thorough going over

As long-time Engadget readers know, there is nothing so riveting, or for that matter so wildly sensual, as a laptop unboxing in a foreign language. That’s why we’re proud to present you with this video of an MSI Wind U210 being unboxed and manhandled as only the kids at BlogEee can do it: en Francais! But that’s not all, they give it a pretty thorough going over as well (with a more than extensive gallery to boot). As far as looks go, this is pretty much a typical Wind: plastics are identical to the U100, and while small details may differ “the resemblance is still striking.” Even though not a “netbook,” the site ranks the 12.1-inch laptop rather high on the portability scale — after all, it is only 1.46 inches longer and 100 grams heavier than its precursor. But what are you waiting for? Hit the read link for all manner of philosophical musings on things like USB and audio in / out placing on the device. But not before peeping the video after the break.

New HP / Vivienne Tam netbook targets ‘butterfly lovers,’ waifs

Manhattan socialites and fashionistas might as well stop reading this right now. But if for some strange reason you weren’t at New York’s Fashion Week yesterday, we are pleased to tell you that “the Tamster” (as we call visionary clothes horse Vivienne Tam) is back with yet another “digital clutch” for the year 2010. Apparently inspired by the classic Chinese love story “Butterfly Lovers,” this is yet another hyped-up collaboration between the designer and HP, somehow symbolizing “love, freedom, independence and transformation,” according to the PR. While we do know that this device is supposed to make “women around the world… feel independent and free, like butterflies,” we’ve yet to be turned on to any specifics, such as system specs or price. But chin up, sailor — we only have until Spring 2010 to find out. Hope you can wait that long! In the meantime, there’s a gallery below, and some marketing material for you after the break.

Acer’s Congo-based 11.6-inch Ferrari One: finally, a netbook with speed

We’ve seen a couple of netbooks that we’d actually consider to be mildly quick, but given that locating an Ion-based netbook is about as easy as entering North Korea with a US passport, we haven’t had much of a chance to really love on ’em. Today, Acer is extending its boutique Ferrari lineup with the Ferrari One, an 11.6-inch machine that is among the first to rely on AMD’s newly announced Congo platform. Packed within the chassis is a dual-core 1.2GHz Athlon X2 L310 CPU, ATI’s Radeon 3200 graphics, an XPG port for connecting an external graphics solution, a 1,366 x 768 panel, WiFi, Bluetooth, optional WWAN and a 6-cell battery. You’ll also notice AMD Vision and Windows 7 badges alongside the obligatory prancing pony, but you can bet you’ll be paying dearly for this when it ships on (surprise, surprise) October 22nd. How dearly? Try £435 ($724), or roughly the cost of a single lug nut on an F430.

Dell teases new ultrathin Adamo XPS

We’ve seen some thin laptops in our day, but 9.99mm is pretty dang thin (thinner than an iPhone, in fact). There’s no other info on this new Adamo, and Dell is calling it the “9.99mm Design Concept,” which doesn’t really help us know how far along it is. Let’s just hope Dell didn’t have to succumb to Atom to get the size down this far.
