How would you change ASUS’ Eee PC Seashell line?

In the past month and change, ASUS has found time to issue not one, but two new Seashell netbooks. Originally shown to the adoring public at CeBIT in Germany, this fresh take on the Eee PC was a welcome change to the drab netbooks we were accustomed to falling asleep on. We managed to have a look at both the ultraslim 1008HA as well as the more business-oriented 1005HA, but now we’re eager to hear your opinions on the matter. What would you do differently with the Eee PC Seashell line? Would you beef up the battery? Add a few ports? Swap in a different display or processor? We know Microsoft’s Windows XP limitations are holding PC makers back, but who says your imagination has to abide by those same guidelines? Detail your dreams in comments below.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXV: Fashion A10 netbook strikes a pose, Acer-style

Sadly, plenty of folks just can’t seem to shake the notion that “netbooks” and “high fashion” go hand in hand — and clearly the KIRFmeisters of Shenzhen and environs are no exception. As if that couldn’t be any clearer, the kids at Shanzai.com have clued us in on the JingWah Digital Fashion A10, a note-by-note replica of the Aspire One. Aside from the 1.6GHz VIA C7-M CPU, the similarities are striking, including: an 8.9-inch TFT display with a 1024 x 600 resolution, 160GB hard drive, and 1GB of RAM. Sure, it’s no powerhouse, but if the price is right it’ll make a pretty decent accessory. In fact, throw on your Momenta necklace and slap on a pair of 4GB Calvin Kleins and you’ll be able to strut past any velvet rope your encounter (provided the line at the door leads to a LAN party or the BiMonSciFiCon). Theme music after the break.

GB intros budget-priced, Atom-based X1200 thin-and-light

This one doesn’t look to be heading into the hands of consumers just yet, but China’s GB is now apparently shopping its new X1200 thin-and-light around on the OEM market in the hope that some company will pick it up and do their rebadging thing with it — and from the looks of it, they likely won’t have much trouble finding some takers. Like some other hard to peg down laptops, this one packs the still somewhat rare combo of a 12-inch screen and an Atom processor, along with some otherwise standard specs including 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a built-in webcam, and a pair of USB ports. No word on a potential price just yet, but it’ll no doubt be a fair bit more than the 2,200 yuan (or $322) that GB itself is currently asking for it — in large quantities, presumably.

Keepin’ It Real Fake, part CCXIX: Gemsta’s Vaino knock-off

If the Vaino “ultraportable” seemed a little too… well, aspirational, the style mavens at Engadget have dug up a netbook that will certainly correlate with both your awesome sense of style and your self-identification as an OG (that’s “original gemsta”). Dug up by some eagle-eyed KIRF-hunters at 2009’s Shenzhen International Netbook Industry Fair & Forum, this guy sports an 8.9-inch display, an Intel Atom (Z515 / Z520 / Z530), 1GB RAM, up to 64GB storage, 3G, WiFi, SD card slot and more. We don’t have a street date yet for you, but the price should be about 2000 yuan (that’s about $294). And the best part? You won’t have to worry about these guys stealing your thunder. One more pic after the break.

Dell’s 12.1-inch Vostro 1220 gets official in Japan, packs few surprises

We’d already come to grips with the fact that a Vostro 1220 was indeed on the way, and now Dell’s own Japanese branch has confirmed it. Over in the Land of the Rising Sun, the 12.1-inch business laptop has gone legit, bringing with it Intel processor options (a 2.20GHz Celeron or 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, namely), 1GB or 2GB of RAM, a WXGA (1,200 x 800) glossy display, 4-cell battery (a 6-cell is available), WiFi, three USB 2. sockets, FireWire, gigabit Ethernet, VGA output, ExpressCard slot, a multicard reader and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. The unit should start shipping soon in various configurations, with a lower-end build tagged at ¥79,980 ($837); needless to say, we’re expecting a US announcement to follow in short order.

Update: And now it’s a go in North America. Check the local press release after the break.

Lenovo intros well-connected 0.83-inch thick ThinkPad T400s

Thinner than some netbooks and more potent than four or five of them combined, Lenovo’s ThinkPad T400s aims to hit some sort of sweet spot in between weak ultraportables and battery-draining 15-inchers. The 14.1-inch lappie measures in at a remarkable 0.83-inches thin and boasts a starting weight of under four pounds. Within, you’ll find Lenovo’s heralded roll cage technology, a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo processor, your choice of a 128GB SSD or 250GB HDD, a 9.5mm slim DVD burner or Blu-ray player, a multitouch trackpad, Ethernet, WiFi, optional WiMAX / WWAN / Bluetooth / ultra-wideband, a 34mm ExpressCard slot (or 5-in-1 card reader), a battery good for six hours and VGA / DisplayPort outputs. There’s also support for the company’s ConstantConnect and Protect technology as well as a built-in USB / eSATA port. In a surprising move, Lenovo decided to actually tweak the keyboard that has become a staple of the ThinkPad line; it increased the size of the Delete and Escape keys and tightened up the spaces between the keys to “help avoid crumbs that would otherwise fall below the keyboard.” You can check the full release just past the break, and you can call one your own starting today for $1,599 and up.

Dell Vostro 1220 leaks out, looks as cool as it sounds

It’s hard to hate on Dell’s Vostro lineup: cheap is cheap, and there’s nothing wrong with that. In truth, it could probably look a lot worse, but there’s just something vaguely depressing about these unflattering leaked shots of what’s apparently a crimson version of an upcoming 12-inch Vostro 1220 model — in comparison with the fairly clean lines of the existing lineup, these new curves aren’t doing the laptop any style favors, though it’s at least an improvement over the existing 12-inch model. Specs are certainly alright, with a Core 2 Duo T6750 processor (remember back when every small, cheap computer wasn’t running Atom?), 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, SD card slot, ExpressCard and even a fingerprint reader, and we’re sure the price is even better. No word on a release date.

Adamo redux: Dell teases new thin-and-light laptops in Paris with no specs

See that? That’s Dell’s Phil Bryant and Michael Tatelman briefly displaying what they described as an “entirely new model line” of thin-and-light laptops without any further comment at an event in Paris this morning. If that sounds like a replay of the poorly-received Adamo teaser at CES with old dudes instead of models, well, you’re right — Tatelman even referenced the negative Adamo reaction but said “we’re going to try this again.” Good plan. At least this time we don’t have to wildly guess at what we’re seeing: we’re almost positive that’s a pair of those Intel CULV-based ultraportables rumored to be released in August, and unless Dell’s foolishly keeping with the Adamo theme, we’d assume specs and prices will match up with Acer’s Timeline series. Keep a sharp eye, we’ll let you know.

MSI X-Slim X600 specs get detailed in full

We’ve already gotten word of some of the specs for MSI’s new X-Slim X600 ultraportable, and gotten up close with the laptop itself, but those few remaining details has now finally been revealed in full, along with some fresh new pics of a hereto unseen black model. According to Notebook Italia, there will be two variations of the laptop available: one packing a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Solo processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, and the other sporting a slower 1.2GHz Intel Celeron processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive — the latter also ditches the built-in Bluetooth. Otherwise, you’ll get ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics on each, along with HDMI out, three USB ports, a six-cell battery and, of course, that 15.6-inch 1,366 x 768 screen. Still no official word on a US release, unfortunately, but it looks like these will sell for €799 and €949 (or roughly $1,120 and $1,320) when they hit Europe at the end of June.

Oracle just might produce a netbook after acquiring Sun

Oracle sure has come a long way since its cardboard laptop days, but is it really ready to take on the likes of Acer, ASUS, HP and Dell in the netbook area? During a brief appearance at Sun’s JavaOne conference today, Oracle’s main man Larry Ellison proclaimed that his firm “might build a variety of devices as a result of its planned acquisition of Sun Microsystems, including netbooks.” Sadly, there was absolutely no elaboration beyond that, but it’s certainly interesting to think of what a netbook would look / feel like with a Sun flair to it. Who knows, maybe we won’t even have to wonder in a few months.
