SmartQ 7 MID unboxing

Our compatriots at Engadget Chinese just got ahold of that surprisingly attractive SmartQ 7 MID, and have given the thing a proper unboxing. Hands-on impressions are on the way as well, but it’s not hard to see that despite the continued pointlessness of MIDs in most practical applications, they’re only getting better. Except for the ones that aren’t.

MSI X320 ultralight escapes its box

We’ve already spent some time ogling over the MSI X-Slim X320 in person, but the ultrathin laptop is starting to ship out in Europe, and these are the first unboxing photos we’ve come across. Sadly it looks like retail units will be festooned with an nasty array of stickers across the palm rest, but overall it looks like MSI’s pulled off a nice little riff on the MacBook Air theme. Full set of pics at the read link.

[Thanks, Jens]

ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell unboxed, deemed the slimmest, sexiest model yet

We’ve seen a lot of ASUS’ Eee PC 1008HA Seashell in recent days, and now the thin little fella’s been unboxed for all to admire. If the details have already slipped your mind, recall that the Seashell boasts a 1.6GHz processor, a 160GB hard disk, and GMA graphics. The glossy, tapered edges of the 10-incher are looking pretty fine if you ask us, furthering our opinion that the 1008HA is a stylish piece of work. The newest addition to the Eee PC family will be available as of May 15th in the UK for £379 (about $565). One more shot after the break, and hit the read link for the whole, glorious set.

LG X120 unboxing and hands-on

We got an early look at LG’s X120 netbook at CES back in January, but we’ve now finally gotten our hands on the final retail version, and will be properly putting it through its paces in the coming days. Right off the bat, however, it’s clear that the netbook has quite a bit going for it inside and out, including a nice matte white finish all around the exterior (though it’s as glossy as ever once you pop the lid), a generally solid build quality, a usable keyboard (although the trackpad is on the small side) and, of course, LG’s Splashtop-powered Smart On interface, which once again manages to impress with its speediness, even if you’ll still often find yourself reaching for XP. Hit up the gallery below for some unboxing and hands-on pics, and keep an eye out for some more in-depth impressions.

Vodafone’s HTC Magic gets unboxed on video

While white seems to have been the color of choice for most official demos of the HTC Magic, there’s also a black version headed to Vodafone (and other carriers, eventually), and the folks at Netbooknews.de got their hands on one of those once mythical handsets for a video unboxing. As you can see above (and in the video after the break), the packaging is a pretty sparse affair, as are the bundled accessories, which includes only a USB cable, a power adapter, a basic wired headset, and a case that apparently “feels a little cheap.” And, if by some chance you still haven’t seen the Magic in action, you can get a glimpse of that in the video as well.

UMID M1 unboxed ahead of Australian launch

Still no US release in sight, but UMID’s M1 has now set the course for the land down under in the not-too-distant future. Pocketables has managed to get its hands on a non-HSDPA retail version to take it through the unboxing and review motions. The pictures are a good reminder at just how tiny this thing is, especially compared to the jacket pocket fave Vaio P. Unfortunately, it’s also got a rather awkward set of adapters for USB and what appears to be headphones, as seen in the picture above. Australian retailer Justek’s got the unit available for pre-order now, but you might want to glance at that $930 to $1426 price range before you impulsively hit the “pre-order now” button.

Nikon D5000 Unboxed, Looks Sturdy

nikon-d5000

More premature unboxulation today, this time for the video-shootin’, screen-flippin’ Nikon D5000, which has been stripped of its cardboard shell and poked, preened and, well, twisted for lucky recipient Kadath’s Flickr set.

First, isn’t is a little odd how many camera unboxings there are on Flickr? It’s not just the quantity, though — the sheer quality of them makes us wonder if the buyers actually needed a new camera after all (these were, ironically, taken with a Nikon D300).

In this case, though, we’re happy, as we get to see the first in-the-flesh photos of the new D5000; product-verité rather than the primped, powdered and photoshopped primadonna we saw pictured in the press pack.

The build looks nice, with the flecked metal finish much closer to the pro bodies than the cheaper D60. The flip-screen looks very solid, too, and we get a good look at the little speaker that is needed to play back the audio on movie clips (back panel, bottom-right). Nikon has a certain set of design cues that mean the seasoned watcher can spot models fairly accurately from afar. The D5000 has, as mentioned, the sturdy flecked finish. It also has a higher-end viewfinder and flash housing, the one which is tempting to hook a finger underneath.

On the other hand, it has the single, rear command dial, no top LCD panel and a top-mounted dial for mode selection. Finally, the pro models have the drive mode and ISO switch off on the top-left panel, where the ISO dial would have been on a film camera. Master these cues and you’ll be a nerdy Nikon-spotter in no time.

Lastly, that sturdy LCD box looks to be a handy screen protector when flipped shut — way better than the plastic screen that comes with the D700, and which you have to actually buy for the D3.

Check the whole show out on Flickr, including a few test shots taken with the camera itself.

Flip Mino HD Unboxed Before it Officially Exists

flip ultra hd

If you wanted a Flip camcorder and high-definition video, you had one choice — the Mino HD, a $230 pocket camera at the top of the Flip range. And according to Flip and its website, that’s still the only option.

Unless you head down to Bestbuy, where a brand new Flip Ultra HD can be had for just $200. This still unofficial camcorder was picked up by a fellow named Gary Cannon, and he has posted the unboxing pics to prove it. We’re not sure if the new Ultra HD picks up some of its big brothers functions such as fast forward and rewind, or h.264 compression, but we do know that it will shoot for two hours (twice that of any other Flip), it has a supplied rechargeable battery which can be removed and replaced with a coiuple of AAs.

It also has an HDMI-out, which means that — if that is an uncompressed signal — this could be used as a very cheap front-end for a big video capture setup. We’ll be keeping an eye on the Flip site for the official details.

Flip Video Ultra HD makes its unofficial debut, gets unboxed

Thanks Best Buy, we owe you (another) one. Yet again, the big box retailer everyone loves to hate has provided the world with a glimpse of a heretofore unannounced product, and this one’s got our mouths all kinds of damp. Barely a month after Cisco picked up Pure Digital for a small fortune, the Flip Video Ultra HD — which seems to be the natural successor to the standard Ultra — has already begun to hit select store shelves in America. Notable niceties include an HDMI output, 120 minutes of record time (up from 60 minutes), a removable / rechargeable battery and support for AA cells in a pinch. We’re still waiting for the full rundown of specifications (and the price, too), but feel free to tap the read link for a stellar unboxing in the meanwhile.

Update: Looks like it’s going for $199.99. Thanks Matthies!

Nikon’s D5000 DSLR unboxed ahead of schedule

Well, well — what have we here? With 24 hours to go before Nikon’s D5000 hits the streets (at least at Amazon), one lucky soul has managed to stumble upon one early. The D5000 kit, which contains Nikon’s first DSLR with an articulating display, has been officially unboxed in glorious fashion, and Kadath’s Flickr account also shows a few test shots for those curious about image quality. We’re expecting one of these into our own labs any moment now, but for the time being, hit up the read link to enjoy the early-bird spoils.

[Thanks, Sam]
