Crapgadget: No wonder the economy sucks edition

While we here at Engadget are doing everything in our power to get this philosophical “economy” back “on track,” it’s items like these that aren’t doing anything to help. No innovation. No stimulating capabilities. No utility at all, really. Just a webcam that scans business cards, an MP3 player shaped like a cow and a flash drive that’s absolutely not certified for circulation by the Democratic National Committee. Though, we must say that they’re all tailor made for Crapgadget, which is (just barely) good enough for us — drop your vote for the lamest below!

Hercules Unveils DJ-Focused USB Audio Interface

Hercules_DeeJay_Trim_4-6.jpg

USB audio interfaces are a dime a dozen these days, now that GarageBand, SONAR 8 Studio, Logic Express 8, and other low-cost digital audio workstation software has rocketed music recording to stardom among independent musicians. In a unique twist, Hercules has unveiled the DeeJay Trim 4&6, a USB audio interface that’s designed specifically for DJs–perhaps those who already have a control surface but lack a proper input and output setup.

The unit features four channels of output, including two balanced jacks (+4dBu) for PA gear, and two -10dBv RCA outputs for mixing decks and regular amps. Users can also switch the config to allow for two inputs and six outputs: for example, if someone wants to hook in two stereo tracks to an external mixing deck, while flying in a third for samples and loops.

The line inputs, meanwhile, let you connect and mix in an iPod or external CD player, along with a phono level input for connecting vinyl turntables. It also features steel casing, two handles mounted on the sides, and four wide non-slip pads for stability. The DeeJay Trim 4&6 will hit stores in June for $249.99, and works with Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 systems.

LG’s 240Hz LH90 LED TV series priced, global release dates still a mystery

LG’s finally put a price on its TruMotion 240Hz LH90 series displays. Available in 42, 47, and 55-inch sizes, the LED TVs boast a whopping 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, THX support, and the ability to play DivX files via USB. If you need to start budgeting early, expect to pay somewhere around ₩3,300,000 (US $2,445) to ₩ 6,400,000 (US $4,742), depending on the model. We know it’s destined for an international release, but other than that, unfortunately mum’s the word when that date might be.

Those not running from the NWO will find the $59.99 gadget has a myriad of other uses as well, letting you tag all sorts of things and have them trigger various applications. Western Digital 1TB DVR Expander pre-orders up at Amazon, Apricorn add-ons get a face lift

We understand, you’re not ready to let go of the BSG season finale just yet even though Tiger and Phil are charging up the back nine at Augusta, but keeping a lot of HD on the DVR can fill up space quickly — which is where these two come in. Amazon is now taking pre-orders of the long-awaited 1TB edition of Western Digital’s TiVo compatible (or other eSATA enabled box) DVR Expander, although no ship date is listed, and Apricorn took our advice on its fugly 500GB, 1TB or 1.5TB sized boxes, giving them a sleek new look. It’s dual USB 2.0 / eSATA compatible, but not TiVo, so Scientific Atlanta 8300, DirecTV and DISH ViP owners can claim this one at $219 for the 1.5TB, while the WD will set you back $183.

Dream Cheeky’s USS Enterprise webcam exudes charm and class

Now that it’s legal for George Takei to get married in Iowa, what better way to celebrate than by letting your “Trek flag” fly in your home or office? The USS Enterprise-themed USB webcam features an adjustable focus, and the red engine lights (or whatever they are) actually, you know, light up. For maximum realism, we guess. And the cable is adorned with the Star Fleet Insignia although, sadly, it will not function as a communicator. It is just a TV series, you know. No word on release date or price, but we’re keeping our eyes peeled.

Crapgadget: USB abomination edition (with a pinch of superhero)

Seriously, just listen at this and try to stifle your sighs. “Bling Bling USB optical mouse.” “Jewel Necklace USB flash drive.” “Turtle-Look USB 2.0 Hub with a tray.” “Magic Sensor LCD Alarm Clock.” “Insect USB Mini Fan.” Yes, friends, this is the type of utter garbage we’re dealing with in this episode of Crapgadget. Honestly, we’re simultaneously astounded and deeply depressed that anyone would even consider dishing out their hard-earned cheddar for any of this rubbish, but we’re doing our darnedest to pretend that these were simply created for us to have a laugh at.The week’s strongest contender? Some superhero magnet pixels… and that’s saying something.

Gold Bullion Wireless Mouse only looks like a million bucks

Look, we fully understand the dilemma. You picked up a Pure*Gold PC late last year, and you’ve been tirelessly searching for a suitable mouse to use with it ever since. At long, long last, said device is finally upon us. Too comical for Crapgadget and too outlandish to be taken seriously, the Gold Bullion Wireless Mouse operates on practically any USB-enabled machine and is coated with precisely zero atoms of gold film. In other words, around 98 percent of the $34.68 asking price is for the looks alone, but you know it’s worth it.
