This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: Kinect Injuries, CODBLOPS, and More

Kobe Bryant - Black Ops CommercialYouTube was buzzing this week over made-up conspiracy theories, cloud formations over the California coast, the launch of Kinect for the XBox 360, and the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops for PCs and consoles. Some of those things made for great videos, others really didn’t. Regardless, we sifted through some of the trending videos at YouTube again this week to bring you some predictably awesome Kinect-related moments, a eulogy for an incredible athlete, and some young athletes with a few tricks up their sleeves.

OK Go Makes Video With Samnsung NX100, Toast

ok_go_toast.jpg

Somewhere out there there’s a person whose three favorite things in this great big world are toast, animation, and indie pop. And boy have we got the music video for them. LA-based band OK Go, which has largely made a name for itself with quirky YouTube-based videos, has just released its latest lo-fi short film.

The video for “Last Leaf” was shot entirely on a Samsung NX100, turning thousands of still photos into an animated video featuring two pieces of browned bread and drawings by animator Geoff McFettridge.

The “Last Leaf” video is part of a larger Samsung’s “What’s Your Next Project” promotion, which features, among other things, behind the scenes video with the band, the camera, and, I assume, a few pieces of bread.

Check out the video, afer the jump.

Videohybrid: Watch and Download Movies or TV Shows

This article was written on August 28, 2007 by CyberNet.

Video Hybrid

Videohybrid is essentially an illegal sharing ring for movies, tv, shows, anime, and cartoons. In some sense it is similar to Peekvid, except that they let users request videos. Registered users can then vote up requests in a Digg-like fashion, and the first person who fulfills the request earns all of the points it has racked up.

So what kind of media has been scrounged up by their users? Here’s the top ten most popular videos that they have successfully acquired in one way or another:

  1. The Bourne Ultimatum
  2. Hairspray
  3. Ratatouille
  4. Superbad
  5. The Godfather
  6. The Simpsons Movie
  7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  8. Rush Hour 3
  9. Knocked Up
  10. Transformers

Most of those videos, as you can probably tell, are still in the theaters. The recording quality isn’t great, but what’s more interesting is that they are available for those of you who can’t wait for them to come out on video and don’t want to see them in the theater.

Videohybrid also lets you downloaded each movie’s associated files so that you can watch them at your own leisure on your computer. Most of them are are in the FLV file format, and you’ll need a specialized player such as GOM (our review) or VLC to play them.

It will be interesting to see how long this service survives since their WHOIS information says that they are located in the United States (Washington specifically). I have a feeling that the MPAA isn’t going to let this float by for too much longer.

Top-10 Best High-Speed Water Balloon Videos on YouTube

waterpop.png

Wednesdays. Horrible horrible Wednesdays. The everyday horrors of the workweek are upon us, and the brief respite of the weekend seems an insurmountable world away.

Thankfully, we have the internet!

Some people like to virtually escape work by stalking friends on Facebook. Others pass the time harassing celebrities on Twitter. And still others read recaps of the TV shows they watched the night before so that some anonymous blogger can validate their opinions on the minutia of character development on Gossip Girl.

As for me? I like to watch water balloons exploding in slow motion on YouTube. There’s just something unworldly about water–especially when you slow it down to 1,000 fps. Water’s crazy. You just have to pay really really close attention.

Happy Humpday.
