Download iPhone Firmware 2.0, iTunes 7.7, App Store, and More

This article was written on July 10, 2008 by CyberNet.

The next 24 hours is going to be pure chaos for Apple fans, and the madness started early this morning when Apple released iTunes 7.7. That was then followed by the App Store launch, then a “leaked” iPhone 2.0 firmware, and more. It’s madness I tell you.

I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of Apple news on the gadget sites already, and so we wanted to throw all of the news into one convenient post. Here’s a roundup of the events from this morning:

–Download the iPhone 2.0 Firmware-

MacRumors somehow grabbed a direct download link for the new iPhone 2.0 firmware on Apple’s servers so that you don’t have to wait until tomorrow to make use of the new App Store. The first thing you’ll need to do is grab the download, and then perform a little trickery:

In order to install the firmware, you will have to do it manually by pressing the Option key when pressing the “Check for Update” button in iTunes. Then select the .ipsw file manually. If for some reason your download is a “.zip” file, rename it to “.ipsw” before proceeding.

Be careful though… this update apparently erases all of the data on your iPhone. Unfortunately this does not work on the iPod Touch.

–iTunes 7.7–

Apple has released iTunes 7.7 today which is a requirement for anyone planning on picking up an iPhone 3G tomorrow. This version also includes support for the App Store, but we’ll get into that a little bit more in a minute.

One thing that jkOnTheRun has already noticed is that there’s now an option to sync your contacts with Google from within the iTunes settings. Apple also added remote control functionality so that you can use your iPod Touch or iPhone to control your iTunes. This will, however, require that you install a free app Apple provides called Remote.

–App Store–

The new iTunes also includes support for the long awaited App Store where developers can share and sell applications that they’ve made for the iPod Touch and iPhone. There are over 500 apps available right now broken up into over a dozen categories, and about 25% of them are free downloads. Of those that do cost money over 90% are under $9.99, which is actually a reasonable price. The most expensive is one called ForeFlight that provides weather and data for pilots. The cost? It’s $69.99.

What’s nice is that Apple has made it easy to browse through the App Store and have it show only those programs that are free. I’ve already skimmed through all of the free offerings, and currently have about 15 that are ready to be installed on my iPhone. These include eBay Mobile, Facebook (not that I’ll really use it), NetNewsWire, Pandora Radio, SportsTap (for sports scores), Twitterrific, WeatherBug, and the Yellow Pages. You can see all of the ones I’ve downloaded in this screenshot:

Note: To get the Applications section in my Library I had to enable it in the preferences. Then to browse through the available apps just click the Get More Applications link shown in the bottom-right corner of the screenshot. Or you can just click here to open iTunes and be taken directly to the top free apps.

The application that I’m the most excited about would have to be NetNewsWire because I felt that Newsgator’s mobile interface wasn’t as slick as what Google Reader offered for the iPhone. This free feed reader will synchronize all of your feeds across all of your computers (both Windows and Mac) which is very nice. I haven’t been able to try it out yet, but judging by the screenshot it should be just what the doctor ordered.

Any iTunes user can start downloading the programs that are currently available in the App Store, but you obviously won’t be able to load them onto your device until you get the new firmware 2.0 upgrade.

–App Store on the iPhone–

iphone app store.jpgApple hasn’t officially released the new 2.0 firmware yet, but Gizmodo has been posting videos of how the App Store works on the iPhone. I have to say that it’s pretty slick how you uninstall an application the same way that you remove a web bookmark that you’ve added to your home screen (pictured to the right).

Overall Gizmodo seems to be really impressed with how smooth the whole process is. Apple might have really knocked one out of the park with the new App Store.

–MobileMe–

Apple is also preparing for their full scale launch of MobileMe, which is the rebranding process of .Mac. As TUAW noticed there is already an update for both the Mac operating system and Apple TV that switches over the branding to MobileMe.

–AT&T Gets iPhone 3G Shipments–

This is a video of an AT&T store receiving and stocking the new iPhone 3G’s for tomorrow’s big release. There’s really nothing that interesting with the video other than the fact that the white 16GB iPhone 3G’s come in a white box.

Thanks to everyone who sent in the tips!

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: One courageous rabbit, a Super Mario Wedding Proposal, Earth Day, Symmetry, and More

Symmetry

Some of this week’s most popular videos on YouTube focused on weddings – I suppose everyone’s in the mood what with the royal wedding this morning. Not only do we get to see The Other Guys doing their own tribute to the huge affair, there were tons of wedding proposal videos trending this week. We figured one of them would be enough.
One of this week’s most popular videos is another adorable animal – this time a rabbit that gets some love and care from an adopted human caretaker, and an eye-opening video from NPR’s Radiolab. Also this week was Earth Day, which if you didn’t know, you have to get down on. You’ll understand what that means behind the jump.

Rumor: Hulu Plus to Land on Xbox Live on April 29

Hulu Plus Logo

For those people who use their Xbox 360 are a primary form of both gaming entertainment and video entertainment, it might be finally time to invest in a Hulu Plus account. According to a post at Joystiq, Hulu Plus will arrive on the Xbox 360 on April 29th, finally ending the long wait that Xbox owners have had to suffer while PS3 owners gloated in their faces.
The Xbox 360 has only had Netflix up to this point, but PS3 owners have had both Netflix and Hulu Plus access. That difference has made people looking to cancel their cable television in exchange for streaming video on the Web look more carefully at the PS3 than the Xbox 360. If the story is true and Hulu Plus does come to the Xbox 360 this week, it would put the two consoles back on even ground.

Google Video shutdown halted for now, Google slinging content over to YouTube itself

Seems Google sparked a bit of spirited debate when it decided to pull the plug on Google Video, because the company’s put that plan on indefinite hold, telling users that it’s looking for “an easier way” to migrate its massive archives of video to YouTube. Originally, Google gave users an ultimatum to download videos (or just tap a simple “Upload Videos to YouTube” button) before it erased them for good, but now Mountain View plans to automatically transfer content to YouTube itself. Why wasn’t that the plan from day one? We’d guess that hosting terabytes of streaming video isn’t cheap, folks.

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: Nyan Cat, Little Thor, Perform This Way, and More

Nyan CatSome weeks, serious videos dominate YouTube: thought-provoking, interesting, and deeply meaningful and insightful videos. This isn’t one of those weeks. This week’s most best YouTube videos made us laugh, made us smile in awe, and on top of it all, made us stare at our screen and wonder “what the…”

Among those videos are a cat who’s also a pop tart who apparently can fly, a hilarious spoof on one of our favorite Super Bowl commercials, Wierd Al Yankovic at his finest, and a world record Rube Goldberg machine that transcends past, present, and future.

Google Pulls YouTube from Roku Channel List

Roku - YouTube Channel

If you have a Roku set-top box and you’ve been enjoying the ability to watch YouTube videos from the comfort of your couch, we have some bad news for you. The YouTube channel in the Roku channel lineup was actually an unofficial and unsupported one, and Google recently caught wind of the fact. They’ve asked Roku to pull it from their channel list, and Roku complied.
Reportedly, the issue at hand was the fact that the channel used the MP4 version of YouTube videos that the service provides to mobile devices. That alone isn’t too bad, but the problem is that pre-roll advertisements and pop-up ads that appear over videos weren’t displayed, which made the service virtually ad-free.
Roku noted that they’ve been in negotiations with Google to bring YouTube support to Roku boxes for a long time now, and while they don’t have an ETA for when Roku owners will be able to officially watch YouTube videos on their TV, they’d love for it to happen. If you already have the channel added to your list, you can still enjoy it, but as of now, it’s gone and new users can’t add it.

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: Bluegrass, The Art of Trolling, Lasers, and Dramatic New Tsunami Footage

Maritime Laser

If there’s anything that this week’s YouTube roundup tells us, it’s that we’re all suckers for cringe-worthy videos. Really – if Rebecca Black (who just racked up over 100 million views on YouTube, by the way) can become one of YouTube’s most viewed artists of all time, then you know some of the most-watched forms of entertainment are things we love to hate.
In this week’s roundup, we have some dramatic – and shocking – new footage from the tsunami that devastated the northeastern coast of Japan last month, some hilariously awful attempts to pick up women using memes and languages you’re more likely to find on Reddit than in real life, and a Bluegrass performance of the Super Mario. Cringeworthy? You bet.
On the other side of things though, we get a pretty amazing combo performance of Yo-Yo Ma and Lil’ Buck, and some impressive footage of the US Navy testing its newest maritime weapon: a laser capable of setting fire to small boats.

The World’s Largest Lego Tower, Built by Brazilian Children

Lego Tower

Lego fans will love this: a total of 6000 Brazilians, mostly children, got together for four days to assemble what’s clearly the world’s largest Lego tower, topping off at 102 feet and 3 inches. The effort required over a half-million Lego bricks and looks amazing: the children even managed to emblazon the Brazilian flag in the side using different colored bricks.
The tower breaks the previous world record, just over 101 feet, set in Chile at a similar event held last year. The whole structure is supported by a set of wires draped down the sides to keep the whole thing from toppling over in high wind, and is just the latest entry since the original 43-foot tower build in London that earned the first record.
Check out a video of the tower behind the jump.

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: The Governator, George Takei as Spiderman, Time Lapse Flight, and More

George Takei - SpidermanThere are a lot of celebrities in this week’s YouTube roundup: George Takei makes an impressive case for why he should play Spiderman on broadway, and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a triumphant comeback – and brings some helpful sidekicks with him.

We also get a unique look back in time at the way the New York subway was back in the 1980s, the way living in New York City can be if you really want it to be, and an impressive time-lapse video of a very long flight over the Arctic.

Super Mario Themed Gym Has Everything Except Goombas

Mario Gym

There’s apparently a strong intersection between freerunners and Super Mario Bros fans. This gym, Tempest Freerunning Academy, located in Los Angeles, has been decked out with platforms, trampolines, borders to climb on, and other hand-holds for freerunning enthusiasts to jump onto, bounce over, and spring themselves off of.
The catch is that the entire gym looks like it was lifted straight out of a Super Mario game. All the way down to the pixel art question blocks and the 8-bit bricks, the entire gym is a tribute to the game and the people who love it, including the people who work and play there. The setup is also used in their Parkour 101 training class, so if you’re interested in learning how freerunning works in a geeky setting, that may be the class for you.
Check out a video of the gym behind the jump.
