Xperia X10 lands on Vodafone UK in April

We don’t have pricing, we don’t have specific dates, we just thought we’d let you know that Sony Ericsson’s already outdated Android phone is arriving in the UK in April. This agrees with the release schedules for Japan and Germany, making the fourth month of the year seem like a certainty for the global launch of what is still a hotly anticipated device. Just why the X10 engenders such fervor, we’re not really sure, but it still marks Sony Ericsson’s most aggressive plunge into the smartphone shark pool yet. We’ll just have to wait another couple of months to find out how well that Donut-based OS swims.

Vodafone promises Nexus One ‘in a few short weeks’

Nexus One’s vague Europe-bound release window has tightened up quite a bit. A Vodafone spokesperson said the Google Phone is coming first in the UK and — here’s the kicker — within “a few short weeks.” France, Germany, and a few other unnamed companies are following after later in the year. Enjoy your new Android device across the pond, ladies and gents.

Nexus One hitting France at €450 contract-free?
Maybe you, like us, are a little disappointed at how the Nexus One fared in our review. It may not be the ground-breaker we’d all hoped for, but it’s still a mighty important handset, and while we’re expecting to know the full details for its American release later today it seems someone may have tipped their hat on European availability details a little early. According to Le Point, the phone will be available in France and elsewhere in Europe within the next “several weeks,” with prices at €450 for a contract-free device. However, if you don’t mind signing two years of your wireless independence away to Vodafone that price is said to drop to €200. Again, we’re still waiting to learn about pricing here in the States, but we’d expect a similar ratio here.

iPhone and Vodafone UK set the date: January 14

Vodafone has decided if it can’t give us the iPhone for the holidays, it’ll do the next best thing and spill details of its launch and pricing of Apple’s finest. Available from January 14, the iPhone will be yours for £30 ($48) per month on two-year contracts, though up-front charges will set you back £239 ($386) for the 32GB 3GS variety. A monthly 1GB of 3G data is permitted, alongside unlimited WiFi, but what might be most interesting here is that Vodafone will allow you to use the iPhone as a modem. Such use will not be covered by your allowance of course, and will cost £5 ($8) for each 500MB downloaded, but we’re happy to see a carrier offering the option. Furthermore, though Vodafone’s agreement to carry the iPhone seemed a rushed defensive move, the company now claims it has been preparing its network for over a year to handle the increased traffic it expects.

Nokia N900 coming to Vodafone UK in January 2010

Quick and dirty bit of news for you lovely subjects of the United Kingdom and independent spirits of Ireland: Vodafone’s online store is showing the much hailed N900 as an option, with handsets expected at some point next month. The Irish arm of the carrier had already admitted it’ll be offering the device, and we foresee the two launching the handset simultaneously early in the new year, with regrettably little competition from the other UK carriers. As Electric Pig reported when the N900 first started shipping, only O2 replied with a “not yet,” while Orange and T-Mobile were presumably too busy making out to respond.

Vodafone reportedly ditching the HD2 as iPhone launch looms (update: nope!)

Here’s an interesting one. Vodafone, which is one of the few carriers in the world right now with access to HTC’s HD2, is reportedly not going to stock the handset any longer once its current supply evaporates. The reason? Why, that’s a fantastic question! According to a company spokesperson, there has been a “massive amount of interest” in the big-screen mobile, with initial stock “selling out quickly and subsequent deliveries used to fulfill backorders.” Call us crazy, but it seems a wee bit foolish to can a product that’s selling well — unless, of course, Voda has a certain amount of iPhones that it’ll be required to sell just a few months from now (or else buy ’em itself). Whatever the case, we’re told that the operator “will not [be] re-stocking the HTC HD2 for general consumer sales once current stock runs out,” so if you’re jonesing for one, ten minutes ago would’ve been a great time to buy.

Update: Here’s the latest from Vodafone: “We haven’t recalled or stopped selling it, at the moment we have simply ran out of stock. When our next batch of stock arrives, this will be used to fulfill our outstanding back orders but we won’t be taking any additional orders via Telesales.”

Update 2: HTC pinged us directly and apologized for being unclear. Here’s the bottom line: “[The] HD2 will continue to be available on Vodafone, even after the iPhone launches.”

xpPhone teased with specs and pictures, makes Windows XP young again

Don’t panic, we haven’t gone back in time. What we’re looking at here is the world’s first but still-yet-to-be-released phone that runs on Windows XP, and its Chinese maker has just released some juicy specs and interface images to tease us all. The ITG xpPhone will be blessed with the chutzpah-filled AMD “Super Mobile” CPU, coupled with either 512MB or 1GB RAM. Storage options range from 8GB SSD to 120GB HDD (probably 1.8-inch) and everything in between. While the sheet confirms both GSM and CDMA support, ITG’s pre-order page — which looks more like a newsletter sign-up page at the moment — is still vague on the phone’s availability and price. For now we’ll just continue to gaze at the interface pictures until something happens.

Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture reconstructed from 1000 cellphones, 2000 text alerts (video)

We’re suckers for a well done ad but this, this is simply amazing. Vodafone NZ’s Symphonia features 1000 cellphones syncing 53 different ringtone alerts from 2000 sent messages to reconstruct Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture. We dare you to not be impressed. See how they did it after the break.

Vodafone puts BlackBerry Storm2 up for 26 October preorder

And it’s out. The BlackBerry Storm2 just made its first official carrier appearance with Vodafone. The promising followup to the much maligned BlackBerry Storm will be free on pay-monthly contracts from £35 on up. Specs include a 3.25-inch 360 x 480 pixel capacitive SurePress (new and improved) touchscreen display, 802.11b/g WiFi and 2100MHz UMTS/HSPA data, 256MB of flash memory (double that of the original Storm), 2GB of onboard memory with microSDHC expansion, 3.5-mm standard headset jack, 3.2 megapixel camera with video recording, built-in GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, and 1400mAh battery giving about 6 hours of 3G talk. BlackBerry OS 5 too, of course, when it lands on October 15th in the UK, Ireland, Germany, The Netherlands, and Spain — France, Italy, and South Africa in time for Christmas.

Vodafone nabs iPhone in prelude to UK price war

Now that O2 has lost exclusivity, everyone’s getting in on the iPhone action in the UK. First it was Orange, now Vodafone has inked a deal said to have been signed only last night as a defensive move to stave subscriber defections. The new agreement sees Vodafone selling the iPhone 3G and 3GS to the UK and Ireland in early 2010, a bit later than the Orange Apple expected before Christmas.
