Motorola Xoom becomes official, headed to Verizon in Q1, upgradeable to 4G in Q2

Motorola has just outed its delicious Honeycomb tablet alongside another device, the LTE-equipped Bionic, on its official site. The company’s CES press conference is ongoing right now, where the Xoom will presumably get its proper announcement. All we know so far is that this slate is headed to Verizon, the press release is still somewhere in the hidden parts of the internet. More soon!

Update: The PR and full spec sheet are now embedded after the break. A 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 will power this 10.1-incher, while 4G connectivity will be made available as an update in Q2 following a Q1 launch. Other specs include a 1280 x 800 resolution, 5 megapixel camera, 720p video recording and 1080p video playback, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and finally, a healthy 32GB of onboard storage. The battery is rated to be capable of supporting 10 hours of video. Be still, our beating hearts!

[Thanks, Pratik]

Bug Labs gets cozier with Verizon, announces LTE module for speedy DIY devices

Not satisfied with the smattering of LTE products announced at CES thus far? Why not build your own with Bug Labs‘ modular components? Yes, the open-source hardware manufacturer has teamed with Verizon to offer pre-certified wireless modules once again, though this time they take advantage of the new LTE hotness rather than Verizon’s EV-DO network. No word on when we’ll be able to sign up to prototype our own phones nor how much they’ll cost, but know that even just the base platform will slurp $500 out of your wallet. PR after the break.

HTC ThunderBolt in the wild one more time: 8GB internal, no HDMI?

Here we are a mere day away from the ThunderBolt’s probable announce at Verizon’s CES press conference, which, by our rough count, gives us at least one more opportunity to see the LTE-capable monster leaked in the wild. That opportunity comes courtesy of AndroidSPIN, who claims that we can expect a 1GHz single-core processor, 8GB of internal storage with microSD expansion, 8 megapixel rear and 1.3 megapixel front cams, Android 2.2.1 with Sense, HTC-customized mapping and nav (probably HTC Locations with offline caching), and DLNA compatibility — but no built-in HDMI. Every one of those specs was either already expected or believable enough, though the lack of HDMI — if true — would still give the EVO 4G some bragging rights more than six months after its release. Score one for longevity, eh?

[Thanks, Taylor S.]

HTC ThunderBolt for Verizon and Inspire 4G for AT&T break cover courtesy of Rolling Stone ad

So yes, it’s looking about as confirmed as can be: thanks to a full-page ad in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, we’re finding out that the name of HTC’s first LTE phone for Verizon — and its first LTE phone regardless of carrier, actually — will definitely be “ThunderBolt.” This is the same phone that we’ve seen rumored and leaked over the last few months as the Mecha and the Droid Incredible HD, but we’ll admit — ThunderBolt seems like a pretty solid name for a phone that’s sporting a 4.3-inch display and some of the fastest data around.

Behind and to the right of the ThunderBolt, though, is another leak: the Inspire 4G for AT&T, though it’s unclear what “4G” means in this context exactly — AT&T’s in the same boat as T-Mobile right now where they’re topping out with HSPA+ and don’t have any LTE markets live, so it seems they might be borrowing a play from their smaller rival’s playbook and labeling the HSPA+ airwaves as straight-up 4G. We’re sad to see that trend start to snowball — but we’ll admit, T-Mobile kinda forced their hand on that one. At any rate, we’re pretty confident both of these suckers are going to get official here at CES this week, so keep your ear to the ground.

Verizon Wireless nixing early upgrades and New Every Two program?

Fan of the early upgrade? Hope you’re not on Big Red, then. Android Central’s obtained what’s purported to be a slide from Verizon‘s training material, one that says customers on a two-year contract “will no longer be able to upgrade in months 13 – 20 of their 24 month contract as a standard policy” after January 16th. As for the the New Every Two deal, pared down once already in February 2009, new customers won’t be enrolled if they activate or upgrade a line, also after the 16th. In other words, the program would be effectively dead in the water, but we don’t know if this slide is gospel or a cruel forgery, and we may not know for about another two weeks… you know, after the deluge of exciting phones that’ll be revealed at CES this week. Them’s the breaks.

[Thanks, Mike]

Verizon teases ‘suite of Android-based LTE consumer devices’ this week

Surprised? Nah, neither are we — Verizon’s LTE-based Android smartphones have been leaking like the sweet, Cortex-A8 sieves that they are for weeks now — but Big Red’s using stronger language than ever before to say that we can expect multiple Android devices running on Verizon’s fresh LTE network here at CES this week. Specifically, the press release says that “the company will also offer a sneak peek at a suite of Android-based LTE consumer devices” at its January 6th event here at the show, echoing Twitter teasers last month — but with the key addition of the word “suite,” which hopefully means we’ll have an LG, an HTC, a Motorola, and a Samsung (at the very least) to toy with by the time this week is out. Stay tuned, folks. Follow the break for the brief press release.

Verizon cutting Galaxy Tab price to $500, will refund any purchases from last two weeks

New year means a new price for the Verizon-branded Galaxy Tab. Droid-Life has received word from a couple of VZW store employees that the big red network intends to chop a nice $100 chunk off its price for the 7-inch Android tablet. Though this move hasn’t yet been made official, the Galaxy Tab should soon be available to buy for $500, without any contractual obligations and plus a $60 movie rental voucher that can be redeemed in Samsung’s Media Hub or the preloaded Blockbuster Mobile app. You shouldn’t freak out if you’ve just bought a Tab either, as Verizon’s also said to be offering a benevolent refund for the difference in price to buyers of the Samsung slate who happen to have receipts dating from the last 14 days.

HTC Thunderbolt with LTE for Verizon pictured ahead of CES unveiling?

So, that lovely 4.3-inch LTE smartphone with Android for Verizon we’ve been calling the Mecha and the Droid Incredible HD? Looks like it might come to market as the Thunderbolt, so says Droid Life — and we tend to put some weight on the rumor considering that they’ve just run twelve leaked shots of the thing. As you can see, this is clearly Verizon’s head-on answer to the EVO 4G, featuring similar stylings and, in all likelihood, an LTE modem swapped in for the EVO’s WiMAX one. Sure looks like that “controlled” leak from a few days back, doesn’t it? More on this at Verizon’s press conference next week, we presume.

AT&T, Verizon, RIM get serious about security for mobile devices

As commonplace as smartphones have become, it’s about time that carriers and manufacturers start getting serious about mobile security (and no, we don’t mean iPhone tethers). According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, Verizon is currently working with Lookout, a San Francisco-based company known for remote backup and geolocation apps for BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Mobile devices, while RIM has recently announced a little something called BlackBerry Protect, which promises to lock or even wipe a misplaced phone, pinpoint the thing on a map, and make regularly-scheduled wireless backups. By far the most ambitious plans in the article, however, belong to AT&T, which — aside from recent deals with MobileIron and McAfee — is currently opening a new mobile security lab in New York City. From here, the company will research malware, worms, viruses, and other threats as they develop in the mobile sphere. “Everyone is realizing that this is an uncontrolled environment,” said AT&T chief security officer Edward G. Amoroso. “We don’t want to have the same problems that we had with PCs.”

Samsung LTE phone with front-facing camera headed to Verizon?

Let’s be real: it should come as little surprise that Sammy — a company with multiple Android phones on Verizon already — would be joining LG, Motorola, and HTC in prepping a new model for its LTE network. Sure enough, Gizmodo has scored an alleged shot of said phone, showing Froyo (Android 2.2.1, to be specific) along with a front-facing camera and a model number of SCH-i520; it’s said to feature TouchWiz (as most non-Nexus S Android phones from Samsung tend to do) and, fortunately, lacks the Bing integration that Verizon’s been pushing on its low- and midrange smartphones lately. Given the company’s iffy track record on getting Froyo deployed in a timely manner to the Galaxy S line, we’re not sure how we’d feel about buying a new Froyo model when Gingerbread’s now available — especially with all these other LTE models that Verizon’s going to have on top — but options are good, we suppose.
