Manufacture Royale debuts $1.2 million Opera accordion watch, Sir Steampunk scoffs

Well, pardon us. We balked at the $208 price tag affixed to Tokyoflash’s RPM LED wristwatch, but the value proposition there now looks an awful lot brighter when compared to this. Manufacture Royale’s looking to catch at least one or two elitists off guard with its new Opera Time-Piece, a $1.2 million device that’s composed of 319 parts in the wilds of Switzerland. Purportedly, it was designed by Fabrique du Temps, and the minute repeater plays the hours in the key of A as the minutes chime in C sharp. It’s also encased in 18k gold, sapphire crystal and a healthy dose of self-worth. Word on the street has it that only a dozen of these will be made available for sale, with the accordion casing being the standout feature in our eyes. In a manner of speaking, of course.

Engadget giveaway: win one of four Phosphor World Time E Ink watches!

We said you needed to be on the lookout for a giveaway back when we reviewed Phosphor’s latest E Ink wristwatch last month… and, well, here we go! These lovely fashion accessories, which you’ll find in today’s edition of our Holiday Gift Guide, feature a curved E Ink display capable of showing two time zones of your choice simultaneously — perfect for the geeky globetrotter. Though we can’t guarantee it, we’re fairly confident the winners will also receive the admiration of passers-by that happen to observe the watch on their wrists, so this is really a two-for-one sort of prize. Let’s do this!

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to all residents of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec), 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly. Four winners will receive one Phosphor World Time E Ink watch.
  • If you win, we choose which style you receive. Unfortunately, we’re unable to take requests. Sorry!
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • Entries can be submitted until Monday, November 29, 2010, at 11:59PM ET. Good luck!

TikTok and LunaTik iPod nano watch kits look awesome, despite Ke$ha naming convention

We know it seems like everyone and their mom is turning Apple’s latest iPod nano into a watch, but the TikTok and LunaTik concepts by Scott Wilson of Minimal Studios are definitely the best looking “iWatch” accessories we’ve seen to date. We say concept, because technically the products are still pipe dreams flowing through the funding platform Kickstarter.com — but seeing as it has already doubled its requested funding goal, there’s a very good chance these concepts will actually ship out. The TikTok features a simple snap-in design for quick wrist-mounting and is tentatively priced at $35. The LunaTik, on the other hand, is marketed as a “premium conversion kit” that secures the Nano in a two-piece CNC-machined aluminum case held together with stainless steel bolts, and should ship for $70. As with many Kickstarter projects, pledging some funding to the cause can score you either model at a cheaper pre-order price. Now if only the iPod nano was actually a good watch… Video after the break.

iPod nano review — as a watch

iPod nano watchbands — they’re everywhere! Seriously, ever since Steve Jobs said that an unnamed Apple board member jokingly planned to wear the new nano as a watch, we’ve seen all shapes and sizes of wristbands designed to put the diminutive media player on your wrist, ranging from the super-basic to the super-silly to the super-amazing. But hold up — yes, we thought the new nano was a great little media player when we first reviewed it, but why hasn’t anyone talked about what it’s like to wear one as your watch? Is replacing your current timepiece with the nano’s 1.5-inch 240 x 240 multitouch display actually a good idea? We took the nerd-bullet for you and wore one for a week to find out — read on!

Griffin gets in the iPod nano watch game with colorful, protective Slap wristband

Find some of the current iPod nano watch options a bit too subdued for your style? Then you might want to consider Griffin’s new Slap wristband, which looks to be among the most protective and colorful options to date. Made entirely of a soft silicone, the Slap is available in no less than eight different colors, and it completely encloses your iPod nano (save for the headphone jack) but promises to still let you control the volume and sleep / wake buttons through the case. Still no word on a release date, but you can expect this one to set you back the same $25 that most other similar wristbands seem to be going for.

Sony Ericsson LiveView now available in Europe; if you had a LiveView, you’d know that already

Look, the future is in hyper-informed wrist accessories. If you don’t know that by now, what do you know? Not that, assuredly. Sony Ericsson’s Android-augmenting, Bluetooth-tethered LiveView accessory is now available in some European countries, including some fan faves like the UK, Germany, and France. Prices seem to vary from country to country, with a UK version going for £48.97 (about $79 US), France getting a €59 shot at it (about $80 US), and Germany swooping in with an über-low €42 tag (about $57 US). All three disparate prices seem a small amount to pay to place the future on your wrist / other clippable surface, but maybe that’s just us.

[Thanks, Jason]

Seiko’s ‘active matrix’ E Ink watch now up for pre-order

Does the time you spend at work away from your e-reader leave you crippled with the E Ink shakes? Well the good news is that Seiko’s gorgeous atomic clock-syncing ‘active matrix’ E Ink watch we covered a while back is now available for pre-order via Amazon Japan. The bad news is that it’s priced at ¥84,000 (on sale) — which equates to roughly $1,022 based on current exchange rates. That’s about five times more than Phosphor’s latest 24 hour time zone mastering E Ink watch, or nearly enough cheddar to a buy one of Amazon’s latest Kindles for everyday of the work week. Really, though, the price isn’t too surprising coming from a respected watch company like Seiko, especially when you take into account its schmancy 180 degree viewing angle, geek-chic looks, and radio-controlled movement. Don’t be misled by the ‘active matrix’ terminology however, because a matching leather trench coat isn’t part of this deal.

[Thanks, P-A]

Tokyoflash Wasted watch offers a safe, legal high that’s much more expensive (and much less effective) than street drugs

Just when a Tokyoflash watch has reached the pinnacle of unreadability, it looks like the company has scaled things back slightly — very, very, very slightly. Kisai’s Wasted watch makes “your senses [come] alive” by turning the time display into a sort of psychedelic light show, one that it would take a modern day Timothy Leary to decode. It’s apparently supposed to simulate some sort of hallucinatory state, although we’re guessing that it’s much more likely to give you a migraine. Rechargeable via USB, and available now for $85 plus shipping. Turn on, tune in, and click the source link to get started — or peep the video after the break if you’re uncertain, man.

Phosphor World Time E Ink watch review

They may not be the highest-function watches you’ve ever seen, but Phosphor’s line of timepieces can make a claim that virtually no other watches in the world can: they’ve got E Ink displays. Sure, Seiko’s been teasing us all with gorgeous pieces of E Ink wrist candy for half a decade, but the critical thing about Phosphor’s offerings is that they’re easy on the wallet (relatively speaking) and you won’t need to embark on a grueling multi-year journey through specialty jewelry shops in Asia to try to find one.

The company just recently introduced its latest line of models featuring world time capability, and we’ve had a chance to check them out — all four of them, to be precise. Read on for our quick review!

Garmin Approach S1 is the GPS watch for golfers, sends that caddy back to the shack

Garmin Approach S1 is the first GPS watch for golfers, sends that drunken caddy back to the shack

Pack a lob wedge or extra utility iron? Punch and run or flop and drop? Crush a five iron or hit a three-quarter four? These are just a few of the questions that amateur golfers wish they had to ponder as they instead devote their time to rummaging through the brush trying to find what could be their fourth lost ball in three holes. Maybe Garmin‘s new Approach S1 watch can help. It’s loaded with every hole from over 14,000 golf courses and, from anywhere on the course, will give you precise yardage to the front, back, and middle of the next green — meaning it won’t help your lay-up but could be just the ticket for nailing that approach. Its integrated odometer will even track how many miles you covered through the course of the day and, we’re presuming, not tell your significant other whether you spent those drinking in the cart or walking at a brisk pace. The Approach S1 is available now for $249 and is subtle enough that your buddies might not even notice your new wrist-borne advantage.

Update: As a few of you pointed out, the Suunto G9 watch from a few years back also offers GPS, meaning this is, indeed, not the first after all! That’s a two-stroke penalty, Garmin.
