Energy Drinks Can Cause Heart Failure in Children – Study

energy drinks.jpg

Yikes. According to a new report that rounds up report from a number of scientific journals, those seemingly harmless little energy drinks that have been all the rage for the past few years may have some dire side effects, including, most notably, heart failure.

The study is concerning to those involved for two reasons. First, energy drinks like Red Bull, Rockstar, Monster, et al. are popular amongst children (30 to 50 percent of adolescent drink them, according to the report). Second, the beverages aren’t subject to the same regulation that governs soda, which is limited to 71 mg of caffeine per 12 ounces.

Beyond the caffeine are ingredients like Taurine and Guarana, which are “understudied and not regulated.” The list of side effects is certainly a scary one, including seizures, diabetes, and cardiac abnormalities.

Energy drinks have seemingly come under increased scrutiny in the wake of the malt liquor energy drink, Fourloko, which was pulled from the market after being cited as the cause of a string of incidents with college students.

Jeopardy: Human, Machine Tie – A Faint Glimmer of Hope for Mankind

jeopardy robot.jpg

Is the great battle of man versus machine, here’s an outcome perhaps no one could have predicted–a tie. And kind of a dull one of that. Sure, there was a rousing come from behind push for scrappy humankind, leaving IBM’s Watson and all-time Jeopardy money maker, Brad Rutter, tied for $5,000 (with the show’s most winningest contestant, Ken Jennings, with a distant, but not insurmountable $2,000), but in all, the consensus seems to be that contest was, well, a bit lacking.

Jeopardy’s promoters have been promoting the three-way battle for $1 million as one for the ages since last year. What we got was the TV show equivalent of going over to a friends house to hang out, and having to watch them play video games for two hours–well, that and a lot of footage of Watson’s creators congratulating themselves on what was, admittedly, a pretty cool machine.

There were, however, some entertaining moments, as in, early on when Watson repeated an incorrect answer, prompting host Alex Trebek to fire back, “No Ken said that.”

If you did enjoy the spectacle, good news, there are two more shows–today’s double and final Jeopardy conclusion of yesterday’s event and a full game on Wednesday.

Seven Couples Break Kissing Record

kissing competition .jpg

After 36 hours, seven of the 14 couples competing in a “Kissathon” at a resort in Pattaya, Thailand were still standing, shattering the former record of 32 hours, seven minutes and 14 seconds, set by a German couple, back in 2009.

The event kicked off yesterday at 6 AM, local time at a shopping mall, with slews of tourists present, snapping pictures. The event’s organizers really didn’t expect to make it this far. Somporn Naksuetrong, the manager of Pattaya’s Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks museum, which organized the event, called the whole thing “amazing,” adding, “We didn’t think we would find anybody that could break the record.”

The money helps, no doubt. The winner of the competition will get a diamond ring worth $1,600, and the equivalent of $100,000 in cash.

Hong Kong McDonald’s Launches McWeddings

Mcwedding.jpg

It’s a day you’ll never forget–the wedding procession, the ring, the sound of the deep fryer bubbling in the background. Hong Kong McDonald’s this week kicked off the first formal McWedding, a concept that has caught the imagination of the fairly baffled world since it was first announced late last year.
McDonald’s is pitching the concept as a more affordable alternative to traditionally pricey weddings. The “Warm and Sweet Wedding Package will run a happy couple HK$9999 ($1,283). That get you wedding gifts, invites (with the iconic golden arches), and decorations featuring Ronald McDonald and the Hamburglar (who apparently has promised to play it cool will you recite your vows). Of course, buying a cake, a corsage, a backdrop, and renting a gown will all cost you extra.

Shirley Change, the managing director of McDonald’s, thinks the whole thing is pretty romantic. “They date here, they grew their love here, so when they have this important day they want to come over here.” Two more weddings are confirmed for 2011, with 70 more pending.

This week we celebrated the births of two of history’s greats, Jules Verne and Thomas Edison, with two really cool Google Doodles. We also lost Thin Lizzy’s legendary guitarist Gary Moore. The rest of Twitter was buzzing with the lighter things in life, such as the Puppy Bowl, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga. We rounded up the most buzzed-about topics, and compiled a nice, easy-to-read list for you.

Here are the top trending Twitter topics for the week ending on February 11:

1. SuperBowl
The Green Bay Packers won Super Bowl XLV, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in Arlington, Texas. Besides talking football, Twitter users created trends about Super Bowl ads, the Black Eyed Peas half-time show, and Animal Planet’s popular Puppy Bowl. #superbowl

2. Puppy Bowl
The only thing better than the Super Bowl? The Puppy Bowl, of course! The Animal Planet hosts a Puppy Bowl every Super Bowl Sunday. This was Puppy Bowl VII, and, as usual, it features puppies playing on a miniature football field, a water-bowl cam, being generally adorable, and, this year, a blimp operated by hamsters. #PuppyBowl

UK Amusement Park Ride Built on Ancient Burial Ground, Now Haunted

ScoobyDoo.gif

I’m sure there are plenty of amusement park goers who would pay big bucks for the opportunity to go on an ride built on top of an ancient burial ground. After objects started flying around and construction workers saw what appeared to be a headless monk hanging around, the site of Thorpe Park’s new water slide, Storm Surge, was moved.

The UK amusement park called in paranormal investigators, who traced the issues to the disturbance of an ancient burial ground. Turns out that Storm Surge was being built near the ruins of an old church traced back to the decidedly creepy year of 666 AD. Stone coffins have been found in the area–the park’s owners would have no doubt found even more, had they dug the 15 meter hole for the ride.

Says Jim Arnold of South West London Paranormal,

We carry out these kinds of investigations quite regularly, with medium to weak results being reported on a weekly basis.Thorpe Park, however, was more striking as results were picked up immediately, with orbs, ghostly images in photography and ouija reaction results being strongest around the site where they were proposing to build Storm Surge. The results were so strong, we felt the only explanation could be that an ancient burial

It’s Almost Valentine’s Day: Plan Your Google Wedding

google wedding.jpg

Google has already infiltrated every other aspect of your waking life–why not let the software giant plan your wedding, too? The company has launched Google for Weddings, so you can “Explore how Google’s free tools can help you save time, stay organized, and have fun while planning your big day.”
There’s actually nothing all that exciting on the site. It’s mostly a list of suggestions for the ways in which the company’s existing properties might be able to help you be a little less crazed during the organizational process. “Create a Website with Google Sites,” “Photo editing and personalized announcements from Picnik,” and things of that nature.
The site is also giving users an opportunity to “win $25,000 toward your dream wedding designed by Michelle Rago,” who is apparently some famous wedding planning lady.

7-Year Old Boy Wins, Then Loses a Harrier Jet on eBay

Harrier Jump-Jet

The Harrier jet – most often used by the British Air force and the US Marines – isn’t too much to look at, but it’s one of the few aircraft in military service that are capable of traditional takeoffs and landings but can also angle their jet engines to take off and land vertically in small spaces. And one unnamed 7-year old London boy surfing eBay for what could probably be the coolest possible way to get to school in the morning decided that it had to be his.
Upon seeing the eBay auction for the Harrier Jump Jet, which proudly served in and still bears the markings of the British Royal Air Force, the boy hit “Buy it Now” and subsequently put himself and his father in debt for over $113,000 USD (the Buy it Now price was £69,999.)
Once his father found out what the boy had done, he immediately contacted Jet Aviation Limited, the company charged with selling the surplus Harrier, to let them know there had been a mistake.
Sadly, the 7-year-old boy will have to go without his jet-fueled ride to elementary school, but the folks at Jet Aviation Limited were more than appreciative of all of the additional attention the news brought to their listing. The company subsequently re-listed the jet to dozens of bids, and since the new listing is gone now, we can only hope the Harrier has sold and is on its way to a good home.
