Toshiba’s 13.3-inch Portege R700 gets a pair of WiMAX models

Integrated 3G is so 2009. These days, your laptop just ain’t a mobile workhorse without a 4G module embedded under the hood, and Toshiba’s making sure it keeps with the times by launching a pair of WiMAX-capable Portégé R700 models. The 13.3-inch ultraportable is relaunching with an integrated DVD drive, WiMAX support, the latest Core 2010 CPUs, an ExpressCard slot, eSATA / USB combo port, 4GB of DDR3 memory, inbuilt webcam and a six-cell battery. The Portégé R700-S1332W in particular ships with a Core i7 CPU and 128GB SSD, while the Portégé R700-S1322W steps down to a Core i5 and a 320GB (7200RPM) hard drive. Both units are shipping now from Tosh’s preferred partners, with the high-end option going for $1,699 and the low(er)-end one selling for $1,349. It’s on you to activate a Clear plan, though.

Samsung showing off 330Mbps WiMAX 2 mobile broadband over at CEATEC 2010

WiMAX 2, the sequel to the movie most people haven’t watched, is back to tease and tantalize us courtesy of Samsung’s new CEATEC demo. Filling four separate HDTVs with streaming Full HD and 3D content, the Korean manufacturer of everything electronic is touting its latest advance in mobile broadband connectivity that takes the top speed up to 330Mbps. That may only be a third of the theoretical max capability of WiMAX 2, but you know, we’ll take it for now. The good news is that Samsung’s innovation brew extends only to the conduits between WiMAX devices, meaning that your current-gen transceiver will be able to join the accelerated party as and when Samsung’s ready to dish out the goods. With the 802.16m standard expected to be ratified by next month, Samsung projects its first commercial solutions will be landing in late 2011. Consider our calendars marked.

T-Mobile exec downplays need for LTE, calls WiMAX ‘niche’

LTE? WiMAX? T-Mobile USA’s Neville Ray isn’t as interested in these technologies as the competition. In an interview with BusinessWeek, the Chief Network Officer said, “we’ll look towards LTE at the right point in time for us… that ecosystem is going to be much richer than the competing one from [WiMAX], which is really a niche play.” A niche play, you say? Network burn! What isn’t clear from the BW piece — and it’s something we’re painfully curious about — is if Ray himself used the term 4G as interchangeably as the article implies. After all, the company line is that it’s already got a 4G technology in (the theoretically slower) HSPA+, as it’s claimed as recently as the G2 announcement. We’re guessing not, but all the same, we wouldn’t hold our breath for any radical new cell towers in T-Mo’s immediate future — and we’d expect nothing less from AT&T than to continue to sneer at its use of the 4G term in its press materials.

Sprint execs leave Clearwire board out of an ‘abundance of caution’

Well, it looks like Sprint and Clearwire aren’t taking any chances when it comes to some of the new antitrust rules now in place. Clearwire has just announced that the three Sprint executives now on its board will be resigning out of an “abundance of caution” — that includes Sprint CEO Dan Hesse, along with division presidents Keith O. Cowan and Steven L. Elfman. Not many more details than that at the moment, but Sprint does still hang onto the right to appoint members to the Clearwire board, and the four Sprint appointees currently on the board will remain in place. As The Wall Street Journal notes, however, the move would seem to clear the way for Clearwire to potentially make another deal, although no one involved is saying anything publicly at the moment beyond what’s in the brief press release after the break.

Gateway updates NV series with WiMAX-boasting NV59C66U

Gateway’s just announced an update to its NV series laptops, the NV59C66U. This one, which comes in both 15.6 and 17-inch sizes, boasts an integrated Intel 6250 WiMAX card and an updated chassis design. Other than that, you have a choice of Intel Core i3 or Core i5, as well as AMD Athlon or Turion processors, up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM (upgradeable to 8GB), and an up to 500GB hard drive. The NV59C66U also has 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, and a choice of DVD or Blu-ray drives. Gateway’s taking the opportunity to update the entire NV line as well, so look for all of these options to hit in the coming weeks, with prices starting at around $480. Clearwire throttling at-home WiMAX users?

Ah, throttling. Can’t ever seem to fully shake it, can we? Just weeks after hearing about a similar issue with the Epic 4G, scores of Clear at-home WiMAX users are now up in arms over apparent throttling on certain accounts. As the story goes, it seems as if the company is pulling back on upload and download speeds (from 10Mbps to around 0.25Mbps) for users who have consumed between 7GB and 10GB in a month, which is comically low even compared to Comcast’s hated 250GB / month usage cap. Forum users are finding customer service lines to be no help whatsoever, and some digging has found that this may all be a part of a network traffic administration program that’s ongoing within Clearwire. Have any of you seen similar issues? How much data are you sucking down per month? Does your usage clock still show up in your account profile? Let us know in comments below.

Clear WiMAX router passes the FCC without a scratch

The world is not suffering from a dearth of WiMAX routers, but Clear has just a bit of room in their stable: while they offer 4G modems that plug into your computer over USB or Ethernet, along with battery-powered WiFi hotspots, they don’t offer any home routers that do the WiFi thing, router thing, and WiMAX thing all-in-one. If this sounds like soft spot in their lineup to you, you’ll be happy to know that an honest to goodness plug-it-into-a-wall 802.11n router with WiMAX, Clear branding, and possibly even a VoIP plug has just passed through the FCC. Will it change everything? Maybe.

Clearwire starts selling roaming WiMAX Day Passes in US and Japan, unlimited data awaits

Got some Intel-powered WiMAX equipment, a Clear subscription, and a yearning to spend some time in Japan? Then we’ve got great news for you, sailor! Clearwire has just hooked up with UQ to provide Day Passes over in the land of earthquakes and sushi. These act as one-day roaming permits for your WiMAX needs, furnishing you with unlimited 4G access and costing a measly ¥600 ($7) a pop. So basically, it’s the Clear Rover gone international. Clearwire’s also talking business with other global partners and the ultimate idea seems to be for it to hook up with all the big WiMAX purveyors and set up an affordable 4G roaming network for its internationally minded customers. Comcast says additional Clearwire investment is unlikely

Clearwire isn’t in the black yet, having bled about $126 million in the second quarter of 2010 — but should the need arise for additional investment before it can turn a profit, the company shouldn’t plan to knock on Comcast’s door. Though it doesn’t have as much visibility in the 4G marketplace as Clear and Sprint do, Comcast does actually offer WiMAX service using Clearwire’s network and owns about 9 percent of it, but the cable provider’s CFO says that the prospects for upping that share aren’t good and that its up to Clearwire to “figure this out” — “this” being its financial pickle. Not exactly a vote of confidence, is it? Obviously, adding (or converting to) LTE is a possible game plan for Clearwire that’s going to require some serious cash to pull off, so staying tight with Sprint seems like a stellar idea right about now.

Toshiba outs new 4G WiMAX-ready laptops

Looks like Toshiba’s dipping its toes a little bit deeper into that pool known as WiMAX-ready laptops. In addition to the previously-announced Satellite U405, we’ve now got a quartet of older models with a new 4G flair: Satellite E205, M645 and A665, and Protege R705. All have prices starting between $760 and $1,080 and will hit retail around September 26th. Just make sure you double-check the laptop you’re picking up is the newer version with the right antennas.
