T-Mobile HTC Shadow II Hands On

T-Mobile’s just launched the Shadow (Shadow II), the successor to the HTC Shadow, which features a customized UI on top of Windows Mobile 6.1. It’s quite similar to the original in just about all respects.

The scroll wheel’s still there, and the T-Mobile customized UI is still there, the sliding SureType half-QWERTY keyboard is still there and the Windows Mobile Standard (non-touchscreen) edition OS is still there. I can’t call this the same phone, but it’s pretty damn similar. It does have support for T-Mobile Unlimited HotSpot Calling, which is the calling over Wi-Fi (@ Home) system you can sign up for.

The first thing we’ve noticed is that the phone is light—we thought the battery was missing at first until it booted right up. The keys are bulged and feel good enough (looks the same as the first), and the scroll wheel flipped between items with only slight lag. There’s still Windows Mobile sluggishness throughout, which you’ll notice as you’re dumped from the T-Mobile customized front screen whenever you’re trying to do some task.

The new Shadow doesn’t seem to push the bar of Windows Mobile as much as the original Shadow did, but it’s not a bad phone—it’s just a Windows Mobile phone. It’s portable, light, and somewhat solid. It’s just too bad that it uses Windows Mobile Standard instead of Professional. This is about as good a WM Smartphone as you’re gonna get before Windows Mobile 6.5 hits later this year, which is what you should be waiting for instead of making a purchase now. But if were looking for a phone that’s really black, there’s a reason why they call this the Shadow. Seriously. Cause it’s black. Really black. Ninjas could use this and not be detected.

HP’s iPAQ Data Messenger finally up for pre-order

In reality, HP should’ve made sure that its iPAQ Data Messenger shipped alongside the Voice Messenger back in December, but given that it didn’t, we suppose it’s a small victory that the handset is finally up for pre-order in the UK today. Of course, getting any halfway intelligent Briton to spend £419 ($593) on this already forgotten WinMo 6.1 device (with Mobile World Congress just weeks away, no less) is a challenge we’re thrilled to not be responsible for.

[Thanks, Lester]

Motorola Cuts 77 in Windows Mobile Facility

Motorola_Q9c.jpg

There may be some truth to the rumor that Motorola is planning to ditch Windows Mobile in favor of Google Android for its future smartphone line-up. A new Engadget Mobile report said that the struggling handset vendor just announced it is laying off 77 employees in its Plantation, Florida facility effective March 27th.

The report said that with these departures, Motorola will effectively end Windows Mobile development at the plant. Of course, the entire handset operation is in question, now that Motorola has announced it is cutting 4,000 jobs, 3,000 of which are coming from said cell phone division. Android or not, Motorola needs to get its act together, and fast.

Windows Mobile 6.5 shows up on the Compulab exeda

The more we see Compulab’s sort-of-silly, sort-of-awesome exeda, the more we like it — although the reason we’re smitten today might be because it’s running what appears to be Windows Mobile 6.5, complete with that “honeycomb” app launcher UI. The company says this is an alpha build of the OS, but it does look farther along than those leaked ROMs we’ve been seeing loaded on a few HTC devices, and we’re intrigued by whispers that it takes full advantage of 6.5’s inertial scrolling and other touch enhancements. All that running on a phone which can also boot Android, sports an Ethernet port, and has left- and right-click buttons? We’ll take two. One more pic at the read link.

Sprint Treo Pro officially unavailable again — for now

We’ve received official word from the good folks at Sprint that the Treo Pro wasn’t supposed to be posted today, hence the unceremonious removal of every last trace of the thing within hours of its unveiling. According to the company, the phone will be sold just as soon as it makes it through the “customary testing process,” but it’s any guess how much longer they think that’s going to take at this point. All told, it probably wasn’t the way Sprint had hoped to take the wraps off, but let’s be honest, we knew this was coming for a hot minute now — we just want the Buy link, guys. See the full statement after the break.

HTC Unveils Touch Cruise Geotagging Smartphone

HTC_Touch_Cruise.jpg

HTC has announced the Touch Cruise, a new TouchFLO-enhanced Windows Mobile smartphone featuring HTC Footprints, a new geotagging feature that lets users tag photos with GPS location data and audio clips. The Touch Cruise also includes a car cradle that, when docked, automatically switches the device to a turn-by-turn navigation mode—a useful feature for anyone who has struggled with their handset’s UI and tiny buttons when getting in and out of the car.

The Touch Cruise comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capability, a microSD card slot, and—oddly, for a TouchFLO device—just QVGA (320-by-240-pixel) resolution instead of full VGA mode. HTC will sell the device in the U.S. unlocked as a dual-mode (850/1900 MHz) HSDPA phone, with HSDPA 7.2 and 2100 MHz capability overseas.

I’m not a huge TouchFLO fan, since it sits somewhat uneasily on top of the usual Windows Mobile UI. But I look forward to checking out HTC Footprints and the Touch Cruise’s improved voice navigation mode. Expect it to hit stores in Spring 2009 for between $500 and $600.

Palm’s Treo Pro now on sale at Sprint for $249.99

We begged and pleaded for an official announcement back when we saw this beauty all boxed up, and comically enough, we’re still waiting for that release. Nevertheless, Sprint has quietly hosted up the long awaited CDMA Treo Pro on its webstore, giving those with an unquenchable thirst for more Windows Mobile something to lust over. For whatever reason, this thing is being priced at $249.99 with a two-year contract ($549.99 free and clear), though we get the feeling that figure will be dropping mighty quickly. Let’s just go ahead and call it the Pre effect.

Update: Looks like Sprint’s pulled the Treo Pro page from its site already, so they’re either not quite ready to hawk it yet or we’re looking at the quickest discontinuation in consumer electronics history.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

First Windows Mobile 6.5 devices due in third quarter of ’09?

Buzz is starting to get white-hot over Microsoft’s plans for Mobile World Congress next month with a number of cloud services and a fresh UI — presumably Windows Mobile 6.5 — heading up the rumor pile, and if Digitimes is even close to right on this latest bit, an MWC unveiling is almost guaranteed. The publication is citing “sources” (oh, those wonderful “sources”) at Taiwanese handset manufacturers saying that the first volley of WinMo 6.5-based devices will hit in the third quarter of the year with major volume following on in the fourth quarter, just in time for the holidays. These guys are well overdue for a serious overhaul and they have to be feeling the heat coming off the Palm camp right now — among others — so let’s hope that window sticks.

Sprint’s Treo Pro in the wild, now with more box

Yo, Sprint, Palm, guys… seriously, give it up. We all know this thing’s coming, so can we at least get an announcement or something? We’ve seen the CDMA-flavored Treo Pro in Sprint livery in the wild already, and now we’re seeing the box, which — no surprise — bears a strong resemblance to its GSM bedfellow. As far as we can tell, this sucker is still on track for release before the end of the month, and with retail packaging floating around, it seems at least plausible — so here’s hoping, eh?

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Microsoft’s SkyBox sync service set for a February unveiling, new Windows Mobile UI confirmed?

According to the good people at Neowin, Microsoft has a few big announcements for Mobile World Congress, which takes place in Barcelona next month. Apparently, the company will be taking the wraps off a cloud-based syncing service called SkyBox, a MobileMe-like system which allows you to sync and backup your Windows Mobile phone OTA, though there’s speculation the service might be extended to non-WM devices as well. The cats in Redmond will also apparently unveil something called SkyLine, an enterprise version of SkyBox, and will properly introduce SkyMarket — its “mobile marketplace” (an App Store competitor). Most interestingly, however, Neowin is now claiming that those shots of a Windows Mobile interface we saw back in November that looked somewhat questionable are in fact actual pics from a forthcoming UI overhaul. The site goes as far to say it can “confirm” that the honeycomb interface seen in the photos are “genuine concept shots” of a new interface. As usual, don’t place any bets on any of this — but we’ll be live and direct at MWC next month, so stay tuned.

[Thanks, Bill]
