XP has 10 Days Left, kind of

This article was written on June 20, 2008 by CyberNet.

dell xp vista.jpgIn less than ten days Windows XP will no longer be an option when purchasing most computers, despite the fact that over 208,000 people requested that the XP deadline be extended even longer. It’s time to move on people, or is it?

After the deadline manufacturer’s will only be able to offer XP on machines that are taking advantage of Vista’s downgrade rights. That means the customer will have to purchase a machine with either Vista Business or Ultimate, and then they will get a copy of Windows XP Professional as well. You’ll likely have to pay a surcharge to get a copy of XP Pro from the manufacturer, and to comply with Microsoft’s regulations XP Home is not an option.

Dell has already begun preparing their line of business and consumer machines to offer the downgrade service as an option. Above is a screenshot of what you’ll see when selecting an operating system on your new Dell computer, but you may not see it if you’re hunting around for a consumer computer. For consumers Dell is limiting this option to their gaming machines only, which means it is only available on the XPS 630 and XPS 720 H2C desktops and the XPS M1730 laptop. The Vista/XP Pro bundle is free from Dell until July 7th.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the end, but we already know for sure that low-cost desktops and notebooks can continue to use XP for several more years. Looking around at the other manufacturers it looks as though most aren’t even offering XP anymore, which makes you wonder whether XP has truly reached the end of its life?

Vista can Notify you of Program Updates, Kind of

This article was written on October 29, 2007 by CyberNet.

I’m a little disappointed in Microsoft right now because they almost included an outstanding feature in Windows Vista. The other day one of the Firefox nightly builds crashed which wasn’t a shock to me. And when a program crashes in Vista it always checks with Microsoft to see if other people are experiencing the same problem. Vista lets you know what it finds out in the Problem Reports and Solutions center, and normally I just ignore it. For some reason I actually read through it this time, and there was one thing that caught my attention.

In the upper-right corner of the report it told me what the latest version of Firefox was, when it was released, and gave me a link to go download it. This information is normally important for users who have problems because a newer version could solve any issues they are facing. Here’s what it looked like (note the area I drew the red box around):

Firefox Upgrade Information

I know you’re probably wondering what the big deal is. It’s just that Windows was able to tell me what the latest version of Firefox was, but why isn’t there a way for me to manually check for updates if this capability is already built-in?

I originally thought that this information would be coming from Windows Marketplace, but the last version of Firefox that it has available was back from August. At the time of receiving this report I had been prompted to download Firefox 2.0.0.8, which was released just days before I got the error message.

In the past we’ve tried to create our own custom update notifier and reviewed several applications (here, here, here, and here) that were all supposed to do what Windows is already capable of. What we really need is something integrated into Vista. Come on Microsoft, is it really that much to ask to give us a button to check for updates to our programs? It would fit in well with the Programs and Features in the Control Panel (it’s the same thing as Add/Remove in older versions of Windows), and such a feature could truly help make a user’s computer more secure.

CCleaner 2.0: Increase Hard Drive Space

This article was written on August 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

CCleaner 2.0

I don’t think there is any doubt that CCleaner is among my favorite applications, and it looks like it is going to stay that way. Thanks to this tiny program I, along with several of our forum members, have been able to clear up gigabytes of files that are no longer needed…thereby reclaiming valuable hard drive space.

Just today CCleaner 2.0 Beta was announced with several new features. The feature that I’m excited about the most is the exclusion list, which lets you select files and/or registry keys to be ignored by the application. This is a big deal because there are some things that shouldn’t be removed, and doing so could render an application unusable.

Tip: When going through the installation process there is an option (selected by default) to install the Yahoo! Toolbar. Make sure you uncheck that box if you don’t want an additional toolbar to appear in your browser.

Here’s a full list of all the new features, as well as a screenshot of the exclusion list in action:

  • Complete rebuild in C++ – With the requirements for a portable version, 64-bit compatibility and Windows Vista increasing against the limitations of the old architecture. We decided to rebuild the entire CCleaner application in highly optimized C++.
  • Faster analyzing and cleaning – Each scanning process was rewritten from scratch and fully optimized. The result being a noticeable speed increase in all areas.
  • Portable – CCleaner can now run from a USB thumbdrive and be installed/run on a computer without a complicated setup process.
  • Compact – The rewrite removed all external file dependencies, so the main EXE is now half the size of the original program and support files.
  • CCleaner 2.0 ExlusionExclusions – It is now possible to specify files, folders and registry keys to ignore from the cleaning process.
  • Redesigned User Interface – The original CCleaner user interface was looking a little dated, so the GUI was redesigned with a modern look, but without sacrificing speed or usability. New icons were created for the interface and the main program icon was updated with a more modern style.
  • Loads of little tweaks – Too numerous to mention them all separately, we’ve tried to improve CCleaner in all areas.

Windows 7 way hotter than Vista off the line, now more popular than all OS X versions

We learned back in November that Windows 7 was having a much (much!) better first few days in retail than Vista did when it launched, but now that the system has had a full quarter and change to make an impression, it looks as if that growth isn’t slowing down. According to new figures from Net Application, Win7 is achieving a higher level of market penetration in a faster amount of time than Vista did; after a month, Vista was stuck at 0.93 percent, while Win7 nailed the 4 percent mark. After two months, Win7 jumped to 5.71 percent, while Vista was barely over 2 percent after the same amount of time. ‘Course, the newest version of Windows had a holiday season to help it out right from the get-go, but there’s still no denying that people are flocking to the system even now. What’s most interesting, however, is that the overall market share of Windows 7 alone has now surpassed all OS X versions that are being tracked (10.4, 10.5 and 10.6), so put that in your pipe and smoke it. Smoke it long and hard.

Remote Desktop 7 Download for XP Vista

This article was written on October 29, 2009 by CyberNet.

remote desktop 7.png

arrow Windows Windows only arrow
One of the new features in Windows 7 is Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) 7, and Microsoft decided to also offer the most of the same functionality to Windows XP and Vista users. Many of you will probably shrug this off as a pointless update, but it has something that is really useful to me. What is it?

Sometimes I Remote Desktop into one machine, and from there I have to Remote Desktop into other machines. A good example of when this might happen is if you have multiple machines in your house… you may only open one of those machines up so that it can be accessed from outside of your network. If you want to connect to other machines you simply RD into the primary one, and then from there you can access any of the other computers on your network.

The problem? If you use one Remote Desktop session inside of another that yellow/tan connection bar along the top can become tedious to use when juggling your various sessions. The more machines you connect to the more those connection bars overlay each other, and can therefore make it extremely difficult to disconnect or minimize some of the connections. You’ll often find yourself sitting there playing with the pin/unpin until the correct connection bar appears.

In Remote Desktop 7 the connection bar is now an attractive transparent blue, but what’s important is that you can slide it back and forth along the top of the window. That basically means you can stagger the connection bars for multiple sessions so that they aren’t completely overlapping each other. I’m demonstrating this in the screenshot above where I connected to one machine using RD7, and then from there connected to another machine running an older version of Remote Desktop. I’ve cropped the screenshot, but the yellow connection bar is actually in the center of the screen. I then dragged the blue bar off to the side so that it could clearly be seen.

Unfortunately the bar can still only be placed along the top of the screen (you can’t move it to the side or to the bottom), but this is still a welcomed addition. There are also a bunch of other features I’m sure some of you will love in RD7:

  • Web Single Sign-On (SSO) and Web forms-based authentication
  • Access to personal virtual desktops by using RD Connection Broker
  • Access to virtual desktop pools by using RD Connection Broker
  • Status & disconnect system tray icon
  • RD Gateway-based device redirection enforcement
  • RD Gateway system and logon messages
  • RD Gateway background authorization & authentication
  • RD Gateway idle & session time-outs
  • NAP remediation with RD Gateway
  • Windows Media Player redirection
  • Bidirectional audio
  • Multiple monitor support
  • Enhanced video playback

New features available only to users connecting from a Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2 machine:

  • Language Bar docking
  • Remote application task scheduler
  • Aero Glass support
  • Start applications and desktops from ‘RemoteApp and Desktop Connections’

Here are the download links for XP and Vista users:

Dell and Microsoft Join in on (PRODUCT)RED

This article was written on January 24, 2008 by CyberNet.

product red

Microsoft and Dell have just announced that they are teaming up to join in on (PRODUCT)RED.  As many of you probably already know, it is an initiative started by U2’s Bono and another man, Bobby Shriver, and the purpose is to raise money for the global fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.   Several other companies like Apple, Gap, and American Express have already been participating for quite some time since the project launched two years ago. Dell has three different editions of their XPS line that are part of  the project, and each come with a special version of Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED. Depending on the computer you purchase, Microsoft and Dell will contribute a total $50-$80, enough to purchase a 4-6 month treatment for one person living with AIDS in Africa.

The three computers that you can choose from include:

  • Dell XPS M1330 (PRODUCT)RED (13.3″ HD Widescreen laptop) – Starting Price is $1,149
  • Dell XPS M1530 (PRODUCT)RED (15.4″ HD Widescreen laptop) – Starting Price is $1,149
  • Dell XPS One (PRODUCT)RED (All-in-one desktop) – Starting Price $1,599

There’s also a Dell 948 All-in-one (PRODUCT)RED Printer which they’re selling for $99.

This new version of Windows Vista Ultimate does include a few things you won’t find with any other version of Windows that set it apart, and thankfully, it won’t cost you any extra:

  • 6 Wallpapers
  • 2 Sidebar Gadgets
  • 1 Screensaver
  • 1 DreamScene movie

And of course all of the included “extras” are focused around red.  The screenshot below shows you what the desktop will look like, and I must say, it does look pretty cool.

As the Microsoft site says, “You get what you want. People get what they need.”

Playing Pinball on Vista

This article was written on August 07, 2007 by CyberNet.

Pinball on VistaSome of my friends who are running Vista have asked me where the 3D Space Cadet Pinball (a.k.a. Windows Pinball or 3D Pinball) game is that has been around since the days of Windows 95. Vista includes several games, but no pinball: FreeCell, Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Hearts, Minesweeper, Purble Place, Mahjong Titans, Chess Titans, and InkBall.

It’s almost like Microsoft pulling Hover which was from Windows 95, or worse than that is yanking SkiFree and Rodent’s Revenge. Man those were some fun games that ate up a good portion of my childhood.

It looks like Space Cadet Pinball is going to be added to the list of games no longer included with Windows. Don’t shed those tears quite yet because, like many of those classic games, people have made them available for download in other locations. There are two download mirrors below for the pinball game, and it appears to run flawlessly on Vista.

So what other games besides Hover, SkiFree, Rodent’s Revenge, and now Space Cadet Pinball do you remember from older versions of Windows?

What’s Going On With Microsoft’s Ad Compaign?

This article was written on September 18, 2008 by CyberNet.

microsoft ad campaign.pngSome of you have probably seen some bits of information on the web over the last day about Microsoft canceling the Bill Gates/ Jerry Seinfeld ad campaign to focus on a “new” campaign. The new campaign was said to be less “ambiguous” and use a John Hodgman look-alike (the PC guy in the Get a Mac ads) to provide “to-the-point” messages to viewers about Windows Vista.

This might sound like a good plan for those of you who are still confused as to what’s going on with the Gates and Seinfeld ads, but in the big scheme of things it does not make sense. Why would Microsoft drop an ad campaign that they just started? As it turns out, Microsoft is not dropping the whole Gates and Seinfeld campaign, but there is some truth to the idea of using a John Hodgman look-alike.

Gizmodo got in contact with the Marketing firm heading-up the Microsoft campaign, Crispin Porter, and they found that the Gates/Seinfeld ads will continue to air. Along with those ads, they will be working on new “I’m a PC” advertisements. These ads will be what you could consider “anti-Mac” ads, something that Microsoft probably needs at this point, and will use the John Hodgman look-alike.

From our perspective, their slight shift in focus might help them get to where they need to be. While the ads that feature Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld are getting people talking, they are causing people so say “huh?” a little too much. More direct “I’m a PC” ads would probably suit their cause a little better.

CyberNotes: Six Amazing Plug-Ins for Vista Media Center

This article was written on March 24, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Microsoft Monday

A couple of weeks ago, Ryan put together a list of reasons why he loves Windows Vista Media Center. Among his reasons were appearance, the option to add multiple tuners, and the fact that you can purchase an Xbox 360 and use it as a Media Center extender. He also listed a couple of extensions which are really helpful as well.  Today we’re going to take a look at six amazing plug-ins for Windows Vista Media Center. Some of them have been mentioned before, others haven’t. If you’re looking for additional plug-ins to make the most out of your Media Center experience, we recommend taking a look at The Green Button Forums. It’s a place dedicated to Windows Media Center and you’ll find all kinds of great information there.

MyNetflix

MyNetflix plug-in is great for those of you who subscribe to Netflix. This plug-in adds “Watch Now” support to Media Center which eliminates the need to use the Netflix application for watching movies on demand. We covered this in early February and here is a review of some of the features:

  • View your Netflix queue from Media Center
  • Browse movies by genre, top 100, new titles, etc.
  • View your history and recommendations
  • Add movies to your queue
  • Remove movies form your queue
  • Move movies to the top of your queue
  • Browse “watch now” movies

This plug-in is currently available as a free beta download.

WebGuide

WebGuide is one of the most popular plug-ins for Windows Media Center because it allows users to manage all of their recordings from any browser. This means that when you’re away from home, you can easily set a show to record. Even more impressive is that users are able to stream content from their Media Center PC to another computer. Back in September Microsoft hired the WebGuide Developer and then offered it for free! On the developers website it’s described as “the ultimate remote viewing & scheduling add-on for Media Center and Windows Home Server” and we agree!

WebGuide 4 is available here for download.

The interface is simple and easy to use, and there’s even a mobile version for phones and PDA’s! If you’re a Media Center users, this is a must-have plug-in, especially now that it’s free.

DVRMSToolbox

The name of this plug-in really doesn’t give you an idea of what it does which is probably its biggest downside.  DVRMSToolbox is actually a commercial skip add-on for Media Center and it’s completely free. The add-on will scan the shows that you have recorded for commercials and then tag where they are. When you go to watch the show, it will fast forward past those commercials. While they aren’t actually removed from the recording, it’s like they were. If by chance it skips past part of a show that wasn’t a commercial, you can easily hit the back button and then you’ll be able to view what had been skipped.

Another great feature will this plug-in is that there are all kinds of settings which you can tweak to your liking. Below is a screenshot of one of the configuration screens.

Get DVRMSToolbox here (it works for Vista and XP)!

MCEBrowser

MCEBrowser is brought to you by the same guy who created the MyNetflix plug-in.  The purpose of this one is to allow easy surfing of the web, right from Media Center using your remote control. The screenshot gallery for this plug-in gives you a great idea of what all you can do. Some of the features include:

  • View your list of favorite sites and then navigate to them
  • Navigate through your favorites subfolders
  • Enter a URL that you want to browse to
  • Zoom in and out of a web page
  • Form support for filling out edit boxes, list boxes, etc.

The download for MCEBrowser is available here.

media center plugin 1

MC Organizer

MC Organizer is a plug-in that helps you organize and then play your videos.  Features include:

  • Ability to play movies that have multiple files
  • Adds a Cover Flow like interface to your movie collection so you can easily horizontally scroll through movies
  • Multiple video formats supported (for example, if there are three files for a movie, it will play them in order)
  • Integrates for Ziotek Media Carousel Plus (for those that own it) to show the location of the DVD within the carousel

If you have a huge collection of DVDs, this will be worth using. Best of all, it’s free.

mc organizer

Download MC Organizer here. Note: You have to complete a registration before you’re able to use MC Organizer.

Video Browser Plug-in

The highlight of the Video Browser plug-in is that it allows for DVD playback right from your hard disk.  That means that you’ll easily be able to view TV shows and movies that you download or those that you copy straight from a DVD to your hard drive. This add-on also supports metadata for TV shows and movies, but that does require a few extra steps like installing Ruby.

The developer realizes that there are areas which need improvement and he says they will be addressed in the future. For now it is a great plug-in with a nice interface that will allow you to easily watch movies from your hard disk.
