Many of us have been waiting to see whether TechCrunch would be able to pull off their dream web tablet, and it looks like they might be coming close. The second prototype is actually functional. Right now they are saying the cost for parts is just over $200, which means the price will probably be $299 at the low end. Checkout the full article for a video demonstration.

office 14.jpgOffice 14 Alpha Screenshots
Someone managed to get their hands on an Office 14 pre-release version, and has posted some screenshots of the software. It looks a little different than Office 14, but main thing I noticed is the lack of the orb in the upper-left corner.

google datacenter.jpgHow Much Power do Google Searches Consume?
There has been some concern lately regarding how much CO2 Google is producing due to the number of searches they serve up. According to Google’s research a typical user would produce the same amount of CO2 in one year by searching that is produced by doing a single load of laundry.

itunes upgrade.jpgUpgrade to iTunes Plus isn’t Cheap
Some users are finding out that upgrading their music library to iTunes Plus may not be as grand as they once thought. Apple has made it so that music owners can’t selectively upgrade their songs to iTunes Plus. It’s an all-or-nothing deal, which could be quite costly!

google logo-1.jpgWhy Google Employees Quit
Many of us like to think that working at Google would be the best thing in the world, but a long thread by those who have quit might make you think otherwise. Many say that they could make more money somewhere else, the benefits aren’t as good as what Microsoft offers, and Google has poor management/mentoring.

This was a pretty big week for Google, and in the middle of it was their announcement that they were open sourcing the Chrome OS already. They are doing this so that they can start working with partners, the open source community, and developers prior to the launch late next year. Running the new OS isn’t exactly a point-and-click operation, but some sites have already posted instructions as to how you can have it up and running in a virtual machine with very little work.

–Tips, Tutorials, and Reviews–

aruna file upload-1.jpgUse Aruna to Share Files
Finding a good way to share files with friends can be difficult because of limitations many of them impose, but GoAruna knocks off most of those barriers. You can upload an unlimited number of files as long as each one is under 100MB in size. They can then be shared with anyone that you want through a simple URL. You can even manage the files you’ve uploaded through a convenient interface.

lala.jpgListen to Entire Music Albums with Lala
There aren’t many sites out there that will let you legally listen to entire songs or albums, but Lala is one of them. The catch? You can only listen to each song once. That is a pretty big limitation, but what’s nice is that this gives you the chance to preview entire albums before you decide whether there’s just a few songs you want to pickup.

WrapUp: Apple Creating 3D User Interface, Microsoft Thumbtack, and More

This article was written on December 15, 2008 by CyberNet.

Welcome to the WrapUp by CyberNet. This is a collection of news stories, downloads, and tips that we have collected over the last few days, but never got around to writing about. Don’t forget to send in your own tips, or just leave a comment on this page if you think you’ve got something we should include.

–News–

google chrome logo.jpgGoogle Chrome Leaves Beta Phase
Google is notoriously known for how long they keep their products in a Beta phase, but it looks like their web browser isn’t a part of that same group. That’s right, the first non-Beta release is available. They are claiming to have sped up JavaScript even more since the first Beta went out, and have of course increased stability.

microsoft thumbtack.jpgMicrosoft Introduces Thumbtack
Microsoft has developed a free online service that wants to be the sole source of all your notes. Thumbtack, as they’ve called it, will let you save links, photos, and anything else you find on the web. It will be interesting to see whether they try to turn this into an Evernote competitor, or if this is something they’re just kinda doing on the side.

gmail blog.jpgGmail Keeps Getting Better
Gmail is on fire when it comes to pushing out new features. In the last week Google has released numerous new features that we’ve all been clamoring to get our hands on. This includes task management, full PDF previewing (thanks to Google Docs), and SMS messaging via the chat interface. I have to hand it to Google for making people actually want to visit Gmail instead of just using a mail client.

iphone apps.jpgApple Boasts 300 Million App Downloads
Apple’s App Store is growing very rapidly, and they have the numbers to prove it. Over the last 5-months it has dished out over 300 million downloads and currently serves as the home to over 10,000 different apps. Some people doubted whether developers were willing to take on yet another platform, but it looks like they are.

vista logo.jpgVista SP2 Beta Download Available
We had previously written about how to get your hands on Vista Service Pack 2 using Windows Update, but now you can get it straight from Microsoft as a single download. Just remember, this is a Beta and so it could have stability problems. [our article]

flickr mobile.jpgFlickr Mobile Updated
Flickr has revamped their mobile site, and with it comes video support. iPhone and Android users will notice that they can also watch Flickr videos right from the mobile interface, and support for more devices will be coming soon.

windows 7.jpgWindows 7 Beta 1 Coming January 13th
Some people are predicting that Windows 7 could be shipping as early as April/May 2009, but before we get to that point Microsoft has to make some Beta releases available. As it stands right now Beta 1 could be coming in less than a month. [Windows 7 review]

pirate bay amazon.jpgFirefox Extension Makes Piracy Easier on Amazon
A new Firefox extension that was temporarily available looked to see what you were viewing on Amazon, and provided a link to the Pirate Bay to download any digital content for free via Torrents. As expected the developer received a take down notice from Amazon.

iphone app downloads.jpgTop 10 iPhone App Downloads
Apple has posted a top-10 guide to iTunes for 2008, and part of that covers applications in the App Store. They break down the top apps into several different categories, and show both free and paid ones.

xbox 360.jpgXbox 360 Holiday Sales Soar for Holidays
Microsoft is saying that Xbox 360 sales on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) was one of the best sales day in the console’s history. They sold approximately 25% more than Black Friday last year, and sold three times more than the PS3. Guess the $199 price tag might be the sweet spot for a lot of people.

google reader.jpgGoogle Reader Gets a Refreshed Interface
Google Reader never really looked bad in my opinion, but they somehow found ways to make it look even better. The most noticeable change to the interface would have to be the cutback on the amount of blue used, and also the disappearance of the rounded corners.

wordpress 27.jpgWordPress 2.7 Released
I’ve been using pre-release versions of WordPress 2.7 on CyberNet for a few weeks now, and it’s been incredibly stable. The new interface is really sweet, and being able to upgrade WordPress in a few clicks is a huge bonus. I finally feel like the administration section of WordPress is exactly where it should be. [WordPress 2.7 Review]

3d apple interface.jpgApple Working on 3D User Interface?
Some eagle-eyed patent watchers noticed that Apple filed for a patent demonstrating a 3D user interface for their desktop operating system. Several companies have tried to create stuff like this in the past, and it will be interesting to see if Apple can actually pull it off.

google 2008.jpgMost Popular Google Searches for 2008
It’s that time of the year again! That’s right, Google has released the top searches from throughout the year. At the start of this year who would have thought that Sarah Palin would top the list?

google magazine.jpgGoogle Book Search Now Includes Magazines
Now this is cool! Google Book Search now scans through magazines when performing searches on the site. I guess going to the library to find an article in an older magazine isn’t going to be needed anymore either.

Windows 7_ Windows 7 Will Run Fully Accelerated Graphics From Your CPU - Mozilla Firefox 3.1 Beta 2.jpgWindows 7 to Offer Accelerated Graphics via CPU
Windows 7 is said to have an option for users to get accelerated graphics using only the CPU. I’m not 100% sure, but I think that would mean the Aero interface might finally be possible in virtual machines. Granted you’ll have to give up some performance to get it. [Windows 7 review]

–Tips, Tutorials, and Reviews–

hulu.jpgHow to Watch Hulu from Abroad
There are several online video sites that restrict viewing to U.S. residents only, but this guide will tell you how to get around some of them.

best software.jpgBest New & Improved Software of 2008
Lifehacker has assembled a guide on what they believe are the best new and improved programs from throughout the year. I definitely have to agree with their choices.

searchwiki.jpgHide Google SearchWiki from Search Results
Google released the SearchWiki feature a few weeks back so that users could customize the results that are shown, but they forgot one critical feature… a way to opt out! This article outlines some of the options you have to hide SearchWiki from your search results.

start+.jpgEnhance Vista’s Start Menu with Start++
We have written about Start++ before, but it definitely deserves some extra coverage. Start++ is an add-on for the Windows Vista Start Menu that will let you do things like view Wikipedia or Google results right there in the Start Menu. It’s got a crazy amount of customization that you can do, and is definitely a must-have for any keyboard-loving Vista user. [Start++ Review]

gmail gadget.jpgGmail Desktop Gadget Nice for Tracking Email
Google Desktop users will be happy to know that the Gmail desktop gadget has been updated to include many of the features you get from the online interface. Managing your mail just got a little bit easier.

gladinet.jpgMount Online Storage Services as Virtual Drives
With Gladinet you can actually mount an online storage service as a virtual drive on your Windows computer. It supports services like SkyDrive, Amazon S3, Picasa, and more. Uploading files becomes drag-and-drop simple.

WrapUp: Windows 7 Jump Lists for Firefox, New Features in Office 2010, and More

–News–

office 2010.jpgNew Features in Office 2010
I haven’t downloaded the leaked copy of Office 2010 yet, but it sure is tempting when I look at some of the new things it has to offer. I really like the way Microsoft is bringing all of their applications together with a more unified interface now.

gmail logo.jpgGmail Inbox Preview
This whole Gmail Labs thing has got to be one of the best things Google has ever added to Gmail. One of the new features called Inbox Preview will show a static (non-interactive) version of your Inbox on the Gmail loading screen. If you’re on a fast connection this might not be a big deal, but I’ve already been making good use of it when being tethered to my Blackberry where things aren’t quite so speedy.

windows 7 starter max.jpgWindows 7 Starter Dropping 3-App Limit?
The “Starter” edition of Windows has always had some rather hefty restrictions since it was targeted mostly at developing nations. The Starter edition might be perfect for netbooks though, which is causing Microsoft to rethink what should be allowed so that users don’t necessarily feel like they’re running a handicapped version of Windows.

google chrome logoa.jpgGoogle Chrome 2.0 Released
Just 8-months after Google Chrome’s first release comes the next major milestone. This version includes an improved new tab page, full screen mode, form autofill, and all kinds of performance improvements.

palm pre.jpgPalm Pre Coming June 6th for $200
Many people are counting on Palm Pre to be one device that can really throw Apple some competition in the touchscreen smartphone market. From what I’ve seen in videos and images I’d say the Palm Pre’s interface is definitely top-notch, but we’ll have to wait to see if it can live up to the hype.

flock twitter.jpgFlock 2.5 Adds Twitter Support
This was a long time coming, but the social web browser Flock has finally added support for the Twitter microblogging service with the release of version 2.5 last week. Twitter has been rapidly growing, and I was always puzzled as to how Flock never had any support for the service. After playing with it for a little while I have to admit that I like how they integrated it all into the browser though.

pandora one.jpgPandora Adding Subscription Option
Pandora has managed to stay alive using an advertising-based revenue model, but if you’re willing to pay you can get even more of the Pandora you love. For $36 a year you’ll be able to use their service ad-free, get a desktop app capable of streaming music without a web browser, listen to tunes at 192Kbps, and have the “timeout” period increased from one-hour to five-hours.

–Tips, Tutorials, and Reviews–

windows 7 firefox.jpgWindows 7 Jump Lists for Firefox
One of the new features Microsoft added to the Windows 7 Taskbar is called Jump Lists, and is basically a super-charged context menu for running applications. Internet Explorer 8 makes good use of this menu, and thanks to an extension Firefox can, too.

3d logo.jpgCreate a 3D Logo with GIMP
If you’re new to the GIMP graphics editor things can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but this tutorial aims to get you on your feet demonstrating how to make a cool looking 3D logo.

wolfram google.jpgWolfram and Google Results Side-By-Side
I’m becoming a big fan of the Wolfram “search engine”, but one thing you’ll quickly notice is that it isn’t exactly designed to be a replacement for Google. What you really need is to display the results from both sites on the same page, and this Firefox extension will do just that.

copypastetool.jpgSimple, Yet Useful Clipboard Utility
The lightweight clipboard utility called CopyPasteTool makes it easy to paste multiple strings of information that you had previously put on your clipboard. Anyone that loves the Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V keyboard shortcuts should definitely check this out.

firefox tabs sidebar-1.jpgMove Firefox Tabs to the Side
I know some people (like myself) who prefer to place their Firefox tabs on the side of the screen instead of along the top. It’s similar to how some people like to have the Windows Taskbar on the side… because with widescreen monitors it can be easier to give up some of the horizontal space rather than the vertical space. Well, even though Firefox doesn’t offer this feature natively there is an extension that will let you place the tabs on the side.

middle click close windows.jpgMiddle-Click Previews to Close Apps in Windows 7
In Windows 7 you can close applications from the thumbnail previews by clicking the little red “X” that appears in the corner, but there’s another way as well. Just middle-click on the preview with your mouse… assuming your mouse supports that.

dirsync pro.jpgDirSync Pro: Free Cross-Platform Sync Utility
Looking for a free way to backup/sync your files across multiple machines? DirSync Pro might be just what you need. It not only runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, but can handle syncing across different filesystems with ease. If you find yourself in a cross-platform household this handy tool might be worth a look.

opera bittorrent.jpg8 Browser Innovations Started by Opera
Even though Opera may not have the largest market share for browsers we do have a lot of things to thank them for. At one point I was using Opera as my daily browser, but once I could get similar functionality in other browsers I found myself drifting away in favor of website compatibility. I still go back to play with it from time to time, but I don’t know if I’d ever make a full-time switch again.

flash logo.jpgAdobe Tests 64-Bit Flash on Linux
One of the biggest complaints that I’ve heard from 64-bit operating system users is that Adobe doesn’t have a 64-bit version of Flash available. That will soon be a thing of the past. They are currently testing a version that works in Linux, and when the time comes they will simultaneously release 64-bit versions across the board for all the OS’s (Windows, Mac, and Linux).

WrapUp: Windows 7 Relaxes CableCard Restrictions, Google Spreadsheets’ SQL-like Syntax, and More

This article was written on September 14, 2009 by CyberNet.

Welcome to the WrapUp by CyberNet. This is a collection of news stories, downloads, and tips that we have collected over the last few days, but never got around to writing about. Don’t forget to send in your own tips, or just leave a comment on this page if you think you’ve got something we should include.

–News–

media center.jpgWindows 7 Relaxes CableCard Restrictions
Microsoft released information last week stating that Windows 7 would give all PC owners the ability to add CableCards to their machines. Prior to this you could only buy CableCards with select OEM PC’s. What does this mean? Basically with CableCards you’re able to record encrypted cable channels using Windows Media Center. This could prove to be some stiff competition for Tivo considering there are no monthly service fees associated with a Media Center PC.

ipod touch camera-1.jpgLeaked iPod Touch with Camera Photos were Real
Last week Apple released new iPod Nano’s with video recording capabilities, but many people were left puzzled when the same functionality was left out of their high-end iPod Touch product line. The internals of the new iPod Touch show striking similarities to the photos that were leaked prior to Apple’s announcements, and provide some solid evidence that the iPod Touch was indeed supposed to have a camera.

dropbox.jpgDropbox Adds More Functionality
Dropbox is an amazing way to keep files in sync between all your machines, but their web interface has always been a little lackluster. They’ve added some new functionality including keyboard shortcuts, interface and usability improvements, and true bulk operations that make their website a lot better.

drop.io yahoo mail.jpgAttach 100MB Files in Yahoo! Mail with Drop.io
Yahoo! only lets you attach files up to 20MB to your emails, but thanks to some third-party integration that limit is now five times larger. To use the service you’ll have to click the “Get Started” link on this page to enable the use of apps, and then you should see an option in your mail sidebar to “Attach Large Files.” It’s not as integrated as I’d like to see it, but it’s still nice being able to send 100MB attachments without leaving the Yahoo! Mail interface.

jump to google.jpgGoogle’s “Jump to” Option in Search Results
When performing certain searches on Google you may find a “jump to” option offered right before the description of the result. Clicking on this link will take you directly to the part of the page related to what you’re searching for. For this to work Google is looking for “internal bookmarks/links” on a page. That’s why you’ll often find that Wikipedia results will show up with this option since it uses internal links in their table of contents to jump to various parts of the page.

–Tips, Tutorials, and Reviews–

windows 7 login image changer.jpgWindows 7 Login Background Changer
Want to freshen up that background image you see when you login to Windows 7? This free and open source application will let you select an image you want to use when logging into your machine. What I really like about this WPF-based solution is that it doesn’t modify any system files on your machine.

itunes watched folder.jpgiTunes 9 Introduces a “Watched” Folder
iTunes 9 has finally added a highly requested feature: a watched folder. This folder resides in your music library, and any music added to it will automatically be imported into your library. Unfortunately this directory cannot be changed, and I suspect that Apple added it for the new “Home Sharing” features that let you automatically add music from other libraries on your network. It’s still nice to have though.

gmail down.jpgHow to Access Gmail when it’s Down
With the recent Gmail outages some people are trying more than ever to make sure that they’ll still be able to access their messages even when the service is down. Normally when Gmail’s web interface goes down the IMAP/POP3 is still functional, and that’s what most people turn to. This article provides a few other alternatives such as checking the mobile version, using the iGoogle gadget, and more.

postbox email app.jpgPostbox Email App Leaves Beta, Charges $40
Over the last few months Postbox has definitely been one of the most talked about desktop email clients. It was available for free when it was in the Beta stage, but now it will run you $40 for a license. It is definitely a nice email client, but they are in a tough spot. There are a lot of free desktop email clients out there, and I’d venture to guess that a majority of the money spent on desktop email clients goes towards Outlook. And then there’s also the fact that the web interfaces for email services like Gmail are evolving at a rather rapid pace.

google docs query.jpgGoogle Spreadsheets Gets SQL-like Syntax
Anyone familiar with SQL might enjoy the new “QUERY” function that was recently added to Google Spreadsheets. This function uses Gviz syntax to imitate SQL syntax right there in your document. It’s still a bit limited at this point… “SELECT” statements are the primary use, but you can add “ORDER BY,” “GROUP BY,” “LIMIT,” and more within your query. Hopefully it will branch out to become even more powerful.

–Tips in Brief–

itunes 9 windows 7.jpgiTunes 9 has Jump List Support in Windows 7
iTunes 9 was released last week, and anyone using Windows 7 can already take advantage of the included Jump List support. If you hover over the icon you can pause, play, or skip music, and you can receive additional options by right-clicking on the icon.

pause emails.jpgPause Incoming Emails
This Outlook 2007 add-on from Microsoft will let you pause incoming emails so that they are not shown until you are ready to read them. This keeps you from getting distracted while you’re trying to work, and can also keep things quiet while you’re giving a presentation.

coral ie tab.jpgCoral IE Tab for Firefox
This Firefox extension is based on the popular IE Tab add-on, but takes it one step further. It is able to save your cookies and also works with Adblock Plus, which are things the original extension can’t boast.

google voice sms.jpgGoogle Voice Adds Email Forwarding/Replies to SMS
Google will now let you view and reply to any SMS messages received through Google Voice right from your Inbox.

easeus backup.jpgAnother Free Backup Utility
As we’ve said in the past… there’s never a shortage of free backup utilities. What makes this one a bit different is that you can use it to backup and restore an entire partition or drive.
