Microsoft Revenue Up, Gates Looking for a New Home?

This article was written on July 20, 2007 by CyberNet.

Bill Gates must be seeing $$ signs after Microsoft announced that they had a reported $13.37 BILLION in revenue for the quarter ending on June 30th. And for their fiscal year which just wrapped up, their reported revenue was $51.12 billion, a 15% increase from last year!

Those numbers are impressive, but I guess they do have Windows Vista, Office 2007, Xbox 360 (despite repair troubles), and Windows Server to thank for their numbers this time around.

Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft had this to say about their sales:

Surpassing $50 billion in annual sales is a testament to the innovation and value that our product groups delivered into the marketplace, as well as the outstanding execution by our field sales, marketing teams and partners to bring that value to life with our customers.

All in all, despite the costs that they will spend on Xbox 360 repairs and trouble with their Online Services group, I’d say that Microsoft had a good year.

So with an increase in revenue, maybe Bill Gates will be out looking for a new high-tech home? :)

And no, he’s not really looking for a new home.

U-verse on Xbox 360 is getting upgraded in November, but will require XBL Gold

The good news for everyone anyone using their Xbox 360 as a AT&T U-verse set-top box, is that it will be upgraded as a part of the new dashboard update coming this fall. that means support for the integrated search, new UI and control via voice or gestures with Kinect. The bad news? After the update, it will only work if you’re also a subscriber to Xbox Live Gold. No problem if you were already shelling out in order to get your Gears 3 co-op on, but not so awesome if you weren’t planning on buying the gaming package just to watch some TV. Giant Bomb has talked to Microsoft and of the new services, some, like the BBC, may be accessible without a paid-up Gold pass, but for HBO Go, Dailymotion and others you’ll need to toss some cash Redmond’s way. To ease the pain, AT&T is tossing a one-time $60 credit towards its users with the package — still no word on whether or not you’ll need to pay that installation fee for a new setup after the upgrade goes through.

The “Professional” Way To Open Your Xbox 360

This article was written on May 26, 2006 by CyberNet.

The

People are always skeptical about opening video game systems because it will often void the warranty. That is why the tutorial below is so nice because it will show you how to open your Xbox 360 without even making a mark on your system. They are careful to use only tools that most people have laying around the house like a CD spindle cover (very clever).

This looks like it will be a good start to modding your Xbox 360, now we just have to wait for the mod chips to be created. I am sure that they aren’t too far away.

Soon, Xbox Companion will let you control your console from Windows Phone

We just reported that Microsoft is partnering with Verizon and Comcast (among others) to continue expanding the reaches of its Xbox 360 entertainment suite, but would it be complete without adding compatibility to its mobile empire as well? The Windows Phone Team says nay; it spoke up this morning about an upcoming app called Xbox Companion, which will access the Xbox Live Marketplace and also act as a remote, allowing you to navigate your console or control video playback directly from your handset. You can call it laziness or convenience — or both — but either way, it’s still going to be a clever new addition to the Marketplace. The app’s currently in beta and will be available as a free download “soon.” For a peek, check out the video below at around the one-minute mark.

Microsoft reveals new TV providers including Verizon and Comcast coming to Xbox 360 (video)

Just as the rumors indicated, Microsoft is bringing video from a number of providers beyond the ones it initially announced to the Xbox 360 in its fall update, including big guns like Verizon and Comcast. While Verizon is promising “a selection” of its live TV channels on the Xbox 360 as expected, Comcast is only bringing its Xfinity TV video on-demand offerings (no AnyPlay powered live TV — yet) to subscribers when it launches “in the coming months.” Other notable providers include Lovefilm (UK, Germany), BBC TV (UK), HBO Go, and Syfy. As promised during E3, the services integrated with Xbox will offer support for search across all available video, as well as support for Kinect voice and gesture controls. The universal search is looking good since it pulls together various services into one UI (as we discussed on our podcast yesterday), but the reality is content providers and geographical limits on what services you can pick from are still throwing up walls between users and content. Check after the break for PR detailing what you’ll be able to access and where, as well as a video intro to all the tasty new TV services.

Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard update video leaks, tours Metro in silence

Last month, we sat down with Microsoft for a quick look at the Xbox’s upcoming Dashboard update — it was sleek, searchable, and extremely camera shy. A quick trip to Europe seems to have cured it of its bashful ways, however, and the budding update can now be seen in a slightly blurry piece of French cinema. This leaked video shows a Dashboard with a smidge more polish than the demo we saw in September, and silently plods on without so much as a bleep or bloop. Our mute host briefly peeks at the Xbox Live Marketplace, casually glances at the Bing search page and scrolls leisurely through the new Dash’s very Metro menu. The whole shebang is en français, of course, and the update’s snappy voice-control gimmick is sadly absent. Sure, there’s not a lot of depth here, but if you want a glimpse of what’s coming when the update drops later this Fall, it’s definitely worth a look.

[Thanks, John]

New Datel Xbox 360 controller packs LCD screen, parties like it’s 1998

Datel’s latest controller for the Xbox 360 is inducing waves of nostalgia, with a curious LCD display channeling the ghost of the Sega Dreamcast’s VMU. The Turbofire EVO also packs in button mapping and fine-tune rumble options alongside third-party controller staples like turbo button settings. These can all be tweaked through the 1.7-inch screen, with extra custom profiles available if you connect the proudly unofficial controller to a PC. Check the video after the break and if a baked-in display presses your buttons, it’s available now direct from Datel.

What Ever Happened With The Gold Xbox 360 Faceplate?

This article was written on December 15, 2005 by CyberNet.

Gold Xbox 360 Faceplate

Did you, like a lot of people, forget about that gold Xbox 360 faceplate being sold on eBay. Well, the seller had pulled the auction, removed the pictures and description, and replaced the pictures with one saying “SOLD”. The reason from eBay for it being pulled is that the seller said the item is no longer available. So did it really sell, or was the lie just catching up? Guess we will never know because we can’t wait to see if the seller gets feedback.

Utilizing iTunes, Apple users can now get media from their Mac computer onto the Xbox 360. This means that Mac users can now fully utilize the Media Center capabilities that the Xbox 360 holds! Connect360 not only allows people to listen to music, but you can also view photos in a slideshow! I am sure that this will make many Apple fans happy that other people are picking up the slack from Microsoft. Props goes out to Nullriver for making this possible.
