Autonomous sniper system combines Xbox 360 controller, .338 rifle for deadly drone action

You know how it is — we’re frightened and appalled by the thought of unmanned killing machines, but if they must exist we really, really want to play with one. The US Army’s latest nightmarish deathcopter / awesome tech toy is a little something called the Autonomous Rotorcraft Sniper System (ARSS). Essentially a .338-caliber rifle mounted to the bottom of a Vigilante unmanned helicopter (though it could eventually be made to work on a Predator drone, for instance), this bad boy utilizes a modified Xbox 360 game controller for targeting while the vehicle itself stays put courtesy of its autopilot functions. Never again will your favorite sniper need to leave the comfort of his barracks! Airborne testing begins in July, with autonomy to come soon after that and a possible robot apocalypse estimated for Q4 2011.

Another ZuneHD render surfaces, fanboy specs too?

While we broke the news of the ZuneHD to the world as we did the original, we have no way to verify the authenticity of this new image originating at Windows Mobile Power User and now trotting itself around the Intersphere fueled by the adrenaline of fanboy fantasies. We’ve been skeptically going over it pixel-by-pixel (what is that on the back? A camera, a screw-hole?) as this is the notorious period that always follows a product leak when dubious PhotoShops and fanart begins flooding our tips box. Fortunately, Zunited’s sources have stepped up with an assertion that the pic is in fact an authentic ZuneHD. So let’s turn an eye to the specs, the glorious, almost absurdly high-end specs that accompany the picture. Zunited’s sources won’t touch these and we’re keeping them at arm’s length for now under the it’s too-good-to-be-true heading. Click through to see what we mean.

Engadget’s 5th birthday giveaway, part 2: win one of two mystery Xbox 360 packages!

Like the Optimus Maximus, the Xbox 360 is a gadget that’s been around on Engadget almost as long as… well, the site itself. Remember that exciting live launch coverage we did back in 2005? Now that was good, clean fun. Anyhow, without further ado, we’re happy to present part 2 of Engadget’s birthday giveaway session: a mystery Xbox 360 package. We can’t tell you what’s in the box here, but we can tell you that it’s totally awesome. The best part? We’ve got not one, but two separate prizes to give away! Don’t miss out — you’ll kick yourself if you do.
All you’ve got to do is let us know what your favorite post from the last five years has been in the comments below.

Note: We’ve bolded the above statement for a reason. Do it.

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. We want to hear what your favorite Engadget post has been from the last five years — and feel free to be descriptive!
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly. Two (2) winners will receive one (1) mystery Xbox 360 package each. Approximate retail value is incalcuable.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • Entries can be submitted until Friday, April 17th, at 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Xbox 360 Elite bundle rumored to include Halo 3 and Fable 2 for $400

Don’t get all loony just yet — this one’s still a long, long way from panning out — but ArsTechnica has it from a reliable mole that Microsoft is gearing up to ship an even more attractive Xbox 360 Elite. One that comes bundled with hits Halo 3 and Fable 2 for the same $400 that the console alone runs you now. We already heard last month that Microsoft was considering phasing out the standard Elite in favor of bundled “limited edition” models, so that certainly jibes. Though, we will caution you that the last time Ars‘s mole spoke of console price drops, he / she didn’t completely nail it. While said mole did accurately suggest that a $400 PS3 would hit America before the 2007 holiday rush (it happened in late October of that year), the whole “$100 PS2” thing took a full two years to come to fruition. Then again, E3 is just around the bend…

XCM’s $84.99 Cross Fire Adapter for Xbox 360 ships today

We can’t say for sure why you’d want to use a PlayStation 3 controller with your Xbox 360, but if you somehow prefer the Batwing over something that’s actually comfortable to hold, there’s this. XCM — who just recently debuted its Rumble Joystick and KO Adapter for PlayStation 3 — is today shipping its Cross Fire Adapter for Xbox 360. As we insinuated earlier, this device enables users to connect a PS3 controller, original Xbox controller (Duke!) or wired Xbox 360 controller to one’s Xbox 360 console so you don’t have to mod your controller to enjoy the spoils of Turbo Fire. Get your order in right now over at Extreme-Mods for $84.99.

Nielsen report ranks gaming usage for Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 consoles

Nielsen’s just released their anxiously awaited “State of the Video Gamer” report, and while it’s a real page-turner, there aren’t exactly any surprises in store for readers. Conducted in December of 2008, Nielsen investigated use of the three major consoles — the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox 360, and the PS3. The study found that of those three, owners of the Xbox 360 got the most use out of their console — an average of 11.4 percent of the time for the duration of the poll, while the PS3 came in a close second at 10.6 percent. The original Xbox followed directly behind that with 10.2 percent, while Wii owners gamed a sad 6.8 percent of the time… far less than that of even PS2 owners. The Wii also came in last place in terms of total days used during the poll, with an average of 5 days (PS3 and Xbox 360 users averaged 6.8 and 7.1, respectively). Hit the read link for the full, breathtaking study and see how you measure up! [Warning: read link is a PDF]

Update: As tangocat (and maveric101) point out in comments, we misread the chart the first time out, mistaking the Xbox stats for the Xbox 360 numbers. We’ve cleared that up — good looking out!

Amazon now selling Xbox Live Arcade games

Amazon might still make most of its money by shipping physical items to your door, but it’s clear that the retail giant knows the future of media is digital — not only is it pushing the Kindle and services like Amazon Video On Demand, it’s expanding its downloadable video game catalog to include Xbox Live Arcade games today. The process seems a little clunky at the moment — you buy a code from Amazon that you have enter into your Xbox — and it’s not exactly easy to compare prices, since Amazon charges you real money instead of Xbox Live points, but we’re not going to complain too much about anything that increases gamer choice. (Using real money actually seems like a benefit to us — we’ve never really loved the idea of points.) The service is live now, anyone going to do a little shopping?

NES Advantage joystick modded for Xbox 360 use

This mod won’t exactly help you much with Street Fighter IV or other button intensive games, but those that prefer to pass the time with the likes of Galaga or Xevious may want to strongly consider following the lead of our friend Mr. Pepsi Pants, and breath some new life into that NES Advantage controller collecting dust in your closet. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be a complete how-to available just yet, but the video after the break does demonstrate that this bridging of consoles is indeed possible, and no doubt simple enough for anyone with the necessary skills. What’s more, it looks like an SNES Advantage mod is already on tap as a followup project, which should offer a bit more practicality while still maintaining some retro flavor.

Ben Heck’s Xbox 360 Controller Monitor lights up your latency

Ben Heck‘s latest device isn’t gonna help you take your next-gen gaming on the go, nor will it let you play with one hand. Instead, the Xbox 360 Controller Monitor is designed to test gamepad latency using a data cable hooked up directly to each button and fed into a 8 x 8 inch display board. Each action lights up the corresponding indicator, and it includes three levels of sensitivity for each cardinal direction of the joysticks and shoulder triggers. At $600 (controller and AA batteries included), it’s not exactly something for the hobbyists out there, but already this thing’s got some major gaming street cred: it’s currently being used for playtesting on Mass Effect 2, the new Wolfenstein, and the just announced Modern Warfare 2.

Man files $1 million lawsuit against US Airways for lost Xbox 360

A Yale student is suing US Airways for $1 million in compensation for his lost Xbox 360 and the emotional toll of attempting to recover it. He claims he had an Xbox 360 with a “specialized hard drive” and other fancy components worth more than $1,000 (is that the kind with the really, really loud drive noise?) in his checked luggage, and when he went to pick up his luggage it was considerably lighter than before, with the Xbox 360 and components found as the only thing missing. Sounds like no-fun-at-all, and the “run-around” he got with speaking to five different airline employees sounds equally painful, but we’re not sure how that all adds up to $1,000,000 — the maximum allowable by law in his state. US Airways says that not only does the federal limit of liability for lost luggage top out at $3,300, but that electronics checked in luggage are specifically excluded from liability. How kind.
