Tired of waiting for the Xperia X10 for your first taste of Android and Sony Ericsson? Leave it to the gang at the XDA-developers forum to jump the gun. Last week marked the successful port of Android 2.0.1 (or Android 1.6, if you so choose) to the Xperia X1. No bluetooth, camera, or GPS — not yet, at any rate — but WiFI, GSM, resistive touchscreen, and all the other amenities should be functioning. Tweakers at heart can find all the necessary files and instructions via the source link, and as for the rest of us, there’s a video to live vicariously through after the break.

Somy X5: basically a Sony Ericsson Pureness for a tenth the price

Here’s the thing about Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Pureness: once you get past the translucent display, there’s not much to it. Seriously — it doesn’t have 3G, a camera, hunks of precious metal, or even a fancy name to flaunt like Vertu, Dior, or Versace; it’s just a low-end phone from a mass-market manufacturer that can’t do much other than make calls. We suppose that’s why it was so easy for a Shenzhen KIRFer to pop out this near-perfect duplicate of the Pureness — the Somy X5 — in no time. Heck, it’s even got support for two SIMs, or exactly twice as many as you’ll find on the $1,000 genuine article — which, if you’re keeping track, is over twelve times the bargain-basement sticker on the Somy here at RMB 550 ($81). Anyhow, looks like it’s back to that search for a faithful Aura replica, eh?

NTT DoCoMo launching its own version of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10

WinMo and Android handsets from HTC, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and others that are designed for global reach typically don’t find their way into Japan for a number of reasons: localization, carriers’ draconian control over handset specs, unique market needs, the list goes on. Every once in a while, though, one’ll break through — take the Xperia X10, for example, which has now been announced for release on NTT DoCoMo simply as the “Smartphone Xperia,” making it the first major carrier anywhere to announce a branded deal on the set. It looks to be a pretty faithful carry-over of the same custom Android skin Sony Ericsson is launching elsewhere and features 7.2Mbps down / 2.0Mbps up, WiFi, an 8.1 megapixel cam, and availability in “Sensuous Black” and “Luster White.” It’ll be hitting in April — right about the same time we suspect it’ll be launching elsewhere.

3D maps demoed on Sony Ericsson X10, Snapdragon paying off

Ericsson Labs is showing off an API for navigating through a three-dimensional interpretation of the world based on real imagery powered by Saab spinoff (the defense firm, not the car company) C3 Technologies on Sony Ericsson’s upcoming X10 — and in a word, it’s looking impressive. The buttons for controlling the action are a bit hokey, of course, but don’t worry too much about that — this is strictly a proof of concept, and the important thing is that no matter how much panning, tilting, and swooping through the cityscape the demo-giver does, video output stays above 30 frames per second. Thank goodness for Snapdragon, eh? There’s no indication that we’ll see a shipping version of this app on retail X10s out of the box, but let’s hope something awesome comes of this. Sony Ericsson Xperia X2a appears on US site screaming ‘I’m coming!’

Whoa! After two months of delay Sony Ericsson’s finally done something with the Xperia X2 — giving it an extra ‘a’ (for North America) instead of pushing it out to us mere mortals. Mind you, the number of times we’ve seen this thing — even as a KIRF — may fool you into thinking it’s been out forever, but the reality is it’s slowly morphing into a unicorn. You know what though? If we wait for another two months, the X2 / X2a might even get a piece of that Windows Mobile 7 action. Or Windows Mobile 8, when SE’s eventually done with its siesta.

Rogers signed up to carry Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as a Canadian exclusive

We still don’t know whether T-Mobile is going to take on-contract advantage of the X10’s AWS version in the States, but as far as we can tell, WIND won’t be taking advantage of it in Canada now that Rogers has locked it up as an exclusive. The bad news is that it won’t be launching until some time in the second quarter — but when you think back to the X1 and the excruciating 16-month delay between announcement and retail on Rogers, that ain’t half bad. Now, Rogers, just push HTC to rethink its decision not to move past 1.5 on the Magic and Dream and you’re doing alright by us (at least as far as Android gear goes).

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness hands-on

Occasionally, a phone exists simply because it can. Not because it’s powerful; not because it offers amazing bang for the buck; not because the manufacturer negotiated some lucrative exclusivity agreement with a major carrier, and certainly not because it’s introducing some groundbreaking new smartphone operating system. Yeah — not even Sony Ericsson is attempting to frame or formulate a legitimate business case for the sinfully hedonistic Xperia Pureness, because they don’t have to. One look at that wild transparent display and you’ll either be smitten or confused and dismayed by the $1,000 sticker price. It’s that simple.

Anyhow, we’ve just taken delivery of a Pureness today and have had a few fleeting moments to check it out. If it weren’t for the screen, you’d be looking at a $30 prepaid candybar here — you don’t have a camera, a high-res display, or any sexy metal or soft-touch bits to give the phone a premium feel. The UI is about the simplest possible incarnation of Sony Ericsson’s typical dumbphone platform, owing largely to the fact that the display’s just grayscale; you’ve got an FM radio (with a headset attached) and a basic music player and browser, but if you’re in North America, don’t expect any 3G.

That said, seriously, look at that shot we took up there: the display is insane. We can’t quite get over it — it’s the ultimate conversation piece. Motorola Aura owners looking for a fresh way to draw a crowd might look at this as their next purchase, but if you’re looking to do anything but talk (and occasionally browse an eerily translucent version of Engadget), make no mistake, this isn’t your phone. Did we mention we want one really, really badly?

Google Goggles gets video demo on Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

There’s little sense in resisting the obvious: Google is slowly but surely taking over your life, but rather than get indignant and discombobulated, we’d suggest letting go and appreciating how much easier things are with the folks in Mountain View squarely in control. Take Google Goggles, for instance, which aims to convert cameraphone images into useful search results on its own Android platform. Up until now, we’ve been shown stock demos and videos of it running on conventional handsets, but seeing the Goggles hard at work on Sony Ericsson’s not-yet-released Xperia X10 is another thing entirely. Hop on past the break for the frames you’re craving, but don’t bank on this making the wait for said phone any simpler to stomach.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLVIII: Xderia X2 packs 2X the KIRF

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X2 may have been delayed until next month, but official delays have never held back the inevitable KIRF hordes, as exemplified by this intriguing “Xderia X2.” Not content with simply approximating SE’s stylish QWERTY slider, this one goes the extra mile with a KIRF edition of Windows Mobile, not to mention some impressive specs like a 12.1 megapixel camera, dual SIM card slots, and a built-in FM radio — which may or may not match the phone’s actual specs. No word on a price just yet, but we’re guessing you’ll be able to buy anywhere from four to fourteen of these for the price of an actual X2.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 hits the FCC again, this time with AT&T’s 3G bands

Yes, you might recall a version of Sony Ericsson’s mighty X10 getting FCC approval last week — but this one isn’t quite the same. This time around, we’ve got WCDMA 850 / 1900 accompanying the quadband EDGE, which is heartwarming news for anyone on AT&T, Rogers, Bell, or Telus, though the complete lack of branding on the FCC’s test unit leaves us to speculate wildly over which of those carriers (if any) will brand the unit — and more importantly, whether any will be on shelves before frickin’ 2011. In the meantime, we’re guessing SonyStyle sales are a lock — so get your save on.
