Sony Ericsson signs deal with NFC chip maker, gets ready to do the Xperia pay

If Google ever hopes to lead the mass exodus away from credit card transactions with Google Wallet, a lot more NFC-packing handsets will need to hit the market. Thus far Sony Ericsson hasn’t exactly led the near-field charge, aside Japan’s Xperia Acro, but it looks like that may soon change, thanks to a deal struck between the phone maker and semiconductor producer, NXP, which will bring the company’s PN65 to future Android-based Xperia models. Wave your phone after the break to check out the official announcement.

Keepin’ it real fake: Xperia Arc KIRF has KIRFy dual-core processor (video)

Keepin' it real Fake: Xperia Arc KIRF has KIRFy dual-core processor

Is that 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255-powered Xperia Arc just too darn fast? We may have just the KIRF you’re looking for. A simple phone with a simple name: the “DR.” This petite pretender shaves 0.2-inches off of the Arc’s 4.2-inch display, adding only 0.03mm of thickness along the way. Forget that Adreno 205 graphics processor, this baby runs on a Meditek MTK6516 ARM compatible processor, a setup often mistakenly advertised as dual-core with a whopping 416MHz core for running Android 2.2.1, and a second 208MHz core dedicated exclusively for the wireless radio. For the record, radio-dedicated partitions are usually skipped on core counts. Wrap it up with premo luxuries like a 3.5-inch headphone jack and 2 megapixel camera, and you’ve got an Xperia knock-off that’s… well, pretty timid. But hey, it’s only 1000 yuan ($154), so at least you can get dangerously close to Xperia territory without shattering the bank. If that’s enough for you, check out a hands-on video (in Chinese) after the break.

The Sony Ericsson Urushi leaks again: ST18i exposed

Sony Ericsson Urushi ST18i

Remember that Sony Ericsson that leaked awhile back, the ST18i? Well, here’s the Urushi again, all fired up and ready for a few holes of Lets Golf 2. Inside is a 1GHz ARM processor with an Adreno 205 GPU which, if you’re on top of your SOCs you’d know, means there’s a single-core Snapdragon under the hood. It appears Sony put a meager 335MB of RAM on board — enough for basic use, but it’ll probably get bogged down under heavy multitasking. We can also confirm that this little guy is pushing Gingerbread, with the expected load of customizations, to its 854 x 480, 3.2-inch screen. Hit up the source link for a healthy dose of picage.

[Thanks, Jesper]

Sony Ericsson to showcase over 20 new games optimized for Xperia Play

One thing we criticized in our Xperia Play review was the lack of games specifically adapted to the handheld’s controls. So it’s only fair to mention that a bevy of new titles is on the horizon — some old, some new, but all optimized for this specific brand of button-mashing. Headline acts include Minecraft (a port we’ve already seen in action) as well as Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard and Battlefield Bad Company 2, both of which have both been accruing headshots on iOS devices for a while now. Hit the PR after the break for the full list of titles, but don’t expect much in the way of pricing or availability. Those details will be announced at E3 next week, when the Xperia Play will have to compete for attention against the Sony NGP. Guess we’ll patiently have to twiddle our thumbs until it’s time to twiddle them with vigor.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro now available for pre-order in the UK

Outside of a bit of bootloader talk, we haven’t heard much about Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Pro since it made its debut at Mobile World Congress in February. The company’s now gotten things rolling again, however, and has made the phone available for pre-order in the UK. As you can see above, it’ll set you back £349.99 SIM-free (or roughly $575), and it should be available sometime next month. Not pictured above is one of the phone’s main selling points: a sliding QWERTY keyboard — but don’t worry, you can get a good look at it in our hands-on.

[Thanks, Amarjit]

Xperia Play finally lands at O2 UK, available in black or white

It took a while, but that O2-exclusive (for the UK) white Xperia Play is finally with us. Earlier this month, the UK carrier had promised to deliver the Play in June, but evidently things have gone better than expected, as we now see “in stock” signage next to both the black and white models of Sony Ericsson’s gaming phone. Pricing is identical for both color variants, starting at “free” when attached to expensive (£34 per month) two-year contracts and peaking at £430 ($702) on pre-pay deals. O2 also throws in a matching multimedia dock plus three bonus games to sweeten the deal. We’re guessing that Android 2.3.3 update that Sony Ericsson just rolled out for the Xperia Play might finally have allayed O2’s software concerns, which has allowed it to now start selling the device in earnest.

Sony Ericsson boosts Xperia Arc and Play to 2.3.3, includes Facebook integration

Well, Sony Ericsson might just deserve a gold star for effort. A week ago we reported that a possible rollout of the long-rumored Facebook integration update would come to select Xperia series phones this week, and we’re seeing the process begin today. The recipients of this particular push are the Arc and Play, though it will come to all new Xperia devices down the road. While the download includes Android 2.3.3, the major focus is on “Facebook Inside Xperia,” another way for you to sync your social media with other aspects of your phone, such as contacts, calendar, and photo gallery. Other improvements in the package include WiFi stability, improved battery performance, HD video recording performance (Arc only), and bug fixes. Don’t stress if your phone hasn’t seen the update yet; Sony Ericsson says it’s rolling it out gradually due to issues with individual markets and carrier branding. No specific timeframe was given, though the company mentioned that “it can take a while.” Should you be one of the lucky recipients to get it today, however, sound off in the comments below.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, Arc getting Android 2.3.3 update next week, Facebook integration in tow

There’s still no confirmation as to when it will be headed to the soon-to-be-released Verizon Xperia Play, but Recombu is reporting that at least some iterations of the phone will be getting upgraded to Android 2.3.3 next week, at which point the Xperia Arc will also get bumped up to the same version. Assuming there’s no surprises in the next week, that would seem to make them the first non-Nexus phones to get the update. What’s more, in addition to various Android-related updates, both phones will also be getting Sony Ericsson’s so-called “Facebook inside Xperia” update, which promises to more deeply integrate your phone (including your calendar, contacts, and even music) with the social network. The company’s also confirmed that the Facebook integration will be included on all future Xperia phones, and it will be headed to all Xperia models released so far this year.

Xperia Play shipment to New Zealand stolen, Vodafone launch delayed (update: fake)

As if Sony Ericsson hasn’t already had enough headaches with the Xperia Play. here comes Vodafone New Zealand with the announcement that its launch shipment of the gamer-friendly smartphone has been… stolen! We don’t know how many Xperia Plays were in those crates, but it must take a pretty sophisticated operation to snatch up all of Voda’s supply for an entire country. This slight hitch in transportation blatant lie follows an unexplained delay in shipments reaching the UK last month, and will compound shortages already caused by limited production capacity in Japan. Man, imagine how terrible this news might have been if the Play actually had any games worth playing.

Update: It’s all fake. Vodafone recently released some “security footage” of the “theft” in action, which only served to immediately incite outrage in viewers of the clip, and a Vodafone New Zealand spokesperson admitted to The Australian that the company made up the whole thing. For shame.

Sony Ericsson ST18i and CK15i blurrily leak their way onto message boards

The last time we saw Sony Ericsson’s Azusa, it was just a lonely blue line on a bar graph. Now it seems as if our little mystery handset might’ve actually become a real smartphone. There weren’t a ton of specs to go off from that original leak, though the ST18i’s 854 x 480 resolution does match up. Also on-board, according to this new info: Gingerbread, an 8MP camera, and an ARM Cortex-A8 1GHz Processor. The Esato message board also seems to have gotten its hands an ad featuring the CK15i, a keyboard-equipped slider phone with a 240 x 400 3.3-inch display. Add the recently leaked Cyber-Shot phone, and it’s shaping up to be a nice, blurry year for Sony Ericsson. Image of the CK15i after the break.
