Is this the Zune HD?

Uh. Looks like something is happening — big time — in Zune land. We present what might possibly be your first look at, yes… the Zune HD. In the gallery below, you can see images from what appears to be a forthcoming marketing campaign for Microsoft’s new PMP. We don’t have any word on specs right now, though we’ve got a sneaking suspicion this will have an HD display.

Update: Based on discussions with sources, it’s looking very likely that the device in these images is — in fact — a new Zune on its way to market.

Leaked Artwork Reveals Touchscreen Zune HD

Whatever the Zune HD is, if what’s depicted in this slick cache of images is real, I want one real, real bad. UPDATE: We have reason to believe it’s legit and a bit more info.

We’ve been told that these design concepts were indeed produced for Microsoft, so the artwork is real, not some fanboy’s ‘shop. Which means that the Zune HD itself is hopefully just as real and yummy.

Update 2: Technologizer’s sources “close to the Zune team” confirm Zune HD is the fourth-gen Zune. He says it’s a little smaller than an iPod touch with “competitive” capabilities. [Engadget]

Microsoft: New Zune hardware coming this year

Although none too surprising, it looks like Microsoft’s gearing up to release at least one new Zune model this year, according to company man Brian Seitz via his Twitter account. Of course, with Ballmer telling an audience last month they’re “sustaining our investment” on the product, we’re gonna temper our excitement a bit until Redmond shows off the goods, which hopefully won’t be long now that the PMP cat’s out of the bag.

Microsoft job ads hints at Zune services in the living room

Well, what’s this? A recent Zune job posting says the boys down Redmond-town are looking for someone to come up with “innovative user interfaces for delivering a rich, deep interactive media consumption experience in a living room environment.” That sounds to us like integration of the Zune software team into the ConnectedTV division is starting to kick into gear — the listing also specifically mentions on-demand audio and video content, which seem like a natural direction for ZunePass. We’re not sure how any of this is going to pan out, but at least Microsoft is making moves to keep the struggling Zune platform alive — whether or not that involves actual Zune hardware in the future is still up for debate.

A Look at the New Zune 2 and Zune Flash

This article was written on August 31, 2007 by CyberNet.

Gizmodo is claiming that the photos pictured below are the first shots of the New Zune. The images came from “a source who cites marketing materials, likely from the retail channel, but were confirmed by a second source as well.” Of course just because they were confirmed by a second source doesn’t mean that they’re legit. Gizmodo even says to take them with a grain of salt.

Zune 2

Any first impressions? My first thought was I wonder if they’re ditching the brown? The brown actually ended up being a pretty popular color for the Zune so I would have thought that a brown version would have been pictured in their marketing materials. Also from the images, we learn that there will be an 80GB model and then a 4GB and 8GB model of the Flash version. Another thought was that in terms of looks, it doesn’t vary from the original Zune THAT much. For some reason,  I was expecting more of a visual overhaul.

Whether or not these pictures are legit, for those of you looking forward to another non-iPod device, what do you think?

High schoolers grill Microsoft’s Robbie Bach on Zune, Windows

As we’ve learned over the past 72 hours, Microsoft is clearly changing its approach to the Zune. And connected TV. And just about every other entertainment-related aspect of its business. As it seeks to better connect people via its software and devices (and make “The Social” something worth showing up to), Robbie Bach has explained that the company’s new retail focus actually has a lot to do with it. The bigwig recently sat down in front of 150 students in order to take questions and relive some childhood memories, and given that kids always say the darnedest things, it’s not shocking to hear that some of the conversation was awkward, if not comical. Point blank, Bach was asked if Windows 7 would be better than Vista, and he expectedly shot back with “Windows 7 is a huge step forward.” There’s far too much dialogue to cover in this space, but if you’re looking for a little insight from the top, feel free to wade through the read links below.

Microsoft confirms expanded Zune team, new mission

While Microsoft’s own post on this newfangled Zune initiative has absolutely nothing to do directly with Windows Mobile 6.5, we wouldn’t push that inkling of integration too far away. In fact, Redmond has just that on the brain, with “that” being “integration.” Confirming an earlier CNET report, Microsoft has decided to wed its Zune software team with the Connected TV organization (Windows Media Center, Mediaroom) in order to “create a single group focused on creating software and services that enable great entertainment experiences across the PC, TV, mobile phones and Zune devices.” Additionally, the Zune device hardware team has joined the mobile communications business group to create a center of excellence in portable hardware, and the priority now is to deliver “new software, services and devices for Zune customers.” We like the sound of all this ambition, but please, don’t make us wait too long for results — cool?

Zune Team Split

As if we needed more evidence that Microsoft is looking for new avenues in which to expand its Zune software (ahem, Windows Mobile, anyone?), the company has quietly split the music player’s team. Software and services no fall under the Mediaroom and Media Center TV head, Enrique Rodriguez. The hardware side will be supervised by Windows Mobile head, Tom Gibbons.

The move, of course, follow massive layoffs in Redmond, which impacted the Zune team–though the company hasn’t said to what degree.

“Zune the service needs to transcend Zune the device,” Rodriguez told CNET.

Microsoft readies Zune service for non-Zune devices, Marketplace appears in WinMo 6.5 screenshot

We’re just days away from Mobile World Congress where Microsoft is expected to make a few notable announcements. Until then, we have to settle for all the hints and innuendo we can gather as Redmond attempts to win back the hearts, minds, and pocketbooks of consumers infatuated with Android, WebOS, and whatever Apple’s got cookin’. Like these supposed 6.5 screenshots above, this time showing what looks like a Marketplace store a la the Zune. We also have CNET reporting today that Microsoft quietly split its Zune team in two on January 22nd: software and services under Enrique Rodriguez, and hardware under Tom Gibbons who just happens to heads-up hardware design at Microsoft’s Windows Mobile unit. According to Rodriguez, “Zune the service needs to transcend Zune the device” adding, “The goal is to make non-gaming entertainment a first-class citizen within Microsoft’s business.” That includes expanding the Zune service beyond the Zune and onto more devices than just Microsoft’s. Or, “a little further out than just in Redmond,” to quote Rodriguez directly. While he wouldn’t say specifically when it was coming to Windows Mobile, he did say to expect products other than the Zune player to be using the Zune service sometime this year. Now, armed with those Zune-centric WinMo 6.5 screenshots and project Pink leaks, it’s not too much a stretch to expect a Zune-like WinMo experience to be detailed in Barcelona. Besides, isn’t it about time that Danger made good on that estimated $500 million acquisition?

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXX: It’s a Zune! It’s an iPod! It’s a spoof!

Simply aping one device at a time has just become too easy for the cloning labs in the backwoods of China, as evidenced by the two-for-one produced here by QQ. The K805 does its best Zune and iPod impersonation, and amazingly, it does so at the same time. The all too familiar click wheel is there, yet so is the rectangular design first made famous by the cats in Redmond. For those looking for the worst of both worlds, you’ll be interested in knowing that this here player features a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution display, support for a plethora of files, USB 2.0 connectivity and a microSD card slot for loading up your favorite EMF jams. We aren’t clued in on a price, but do yourself a favor and pretend you never actually wanted to know.
