Photos of Plane Being Lifted From the Hudson Are Staggering

We’ve seen plenty of photos of the plane that landed in the Hudson, but none quite like these, which were taken by the crane operator who lifted the downed craft from the chilly waters.

Thanks to Travis Cole for the photos and to the crane operator for taking them!

Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds laptop review: two screens of fury in one hefty package

Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds laptop review: two screens of fury in one hefty package

Lenovo’s W700ds stands out from the rest in an incredibly crowded laptop market — and not just because it’s bigger than almost any two of its competitors combined. It’s one of the very few laptops to offer an auxiliary display and has room for a full number pad and an integrated tablet to boot. With those two screens and that pop-out stylus it’s a little bit like a Nintendo DS that entered the Major Leagues and spent a few decades on the juice chasing home run records — but, being a Lenovo, this luggable has little interest in games. It’s powerful and very functional, but bulky dimensions and a similarly unwieldy price tag leave it with two major handicaps to overcome.

Atom-powered MSI WindBOX nearly ready to ride your LCD

Finally, a nettop we can really support. Rather than forcing consumers to deal with yet another underpowered box on their desk, MSI is enabling Earthlings to totally conceal said underpowered box so long as they have an LCD monitor with a VESA-compatible mount. The WindBOX, which actually broke cover back in November, is now completely official, and within the slim slab will be a 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, Intel’s GMA 950 graphics set, 802.11b/g WiFi, audio in / out, three USB 2.0 sockets, a VGA port and a 3-in-1 multicard reader for good measure. There’s no mention of a price, but it should start filtering out later this quarter. Better tell your LCD to start working out, don’t you think?

LP960 UAV flies around, shoots high def photographs, video of its journey

We’ve seen drones that do all kinds of things, but this one is on the special side. Lehman Aviation’s just debuted its LP960 UAV — a winged flyer that’s just over three feet long, weighing under two pounds. The bot is equipped with a 10 megapixel camera, and its job is to zoom around snapping high resolution aeriel photographs and video of the area, while being controlled remotely. The man on the ground pulling the strings can also see what it looks like up above, making adjustments to the flight path accordingly. Check the video ater the break for a demo of the bird, and some examples of its work — plus a stunning, moody soundtrack to boot. Oh, and if you were wondering, the LP 960 is priced at around $17,000.

Sprint Nextel Slashing 8,000 Jobs Before April

Telecom giant Sprint Nextel today became the latest in a long line of tech companies to announce massive job losses. The Kansas-based company plans to cut some 8,000 jobs by the end of March, in attempt to reduce labor costs by $1.2 billion over the course of the year.

Of the 8,000 cuts, the company expects 850 to come as part of its “voluntary separation plan.” The company is also extending a freeze on salaries and suspending its 401(k) match for the year.

Recession roundup: Monday morning edition

Recession roundup: Monday morning edition

It wasn’t that long ago that Monday mornings in the office were a depressing time — another cheerful weekend gone; another long week of work ahead. But, these days, being in the office on a Monday is a good thing, because if your login still works you’ve survived another scary layoff Friday. Spare a thought, then, for those whose system access has been cut off, including 1,300 from Sun (the first wave of a total of 6,000 planned job cuts), 8,000 workers at Sprint who are due to receive pink slips, 6,000 from Philips, and an unannounced number of IBM workers (rumored to be 16,000) who have also found themselves to be on the wrong side of the cost-cutting ax. In one final bit of cheery news, AMD has reported a $1.4 billion loss in the fourth quarter of 2008 and, after shedding its handheld graphics unit, is now selling its manufacturing operations to Advanced Technology Investment. Oh, sorry, you were hoping for some genuinely good news? How about this: that loss is smaller than AMD’s $1.8 billion loss from the same time last year. Now have a great day!
