Nokia ships one millionth 5800 XpressMusic, does a little dance

Okay, so we’re going on the assumption that the 500,000 figure uttered by Nokia CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo during this week’s Q4 earnings call was a touch old — you know, considering that the outfit is now trumpeting the shipment of a cool million. Following a (very!) successful UK launch, Nokia has just shipped its one millionth Tube, which is the handset maker’s first mass market touchscreen device. And to think — it hasn’t even debuted in many corners of the globe yet.

Intel Chairman Craig Barrett to Retire in May

barrett%20levine.jpg

Intel chairman Craig Barrett will retire at the company’s May board of directors meeting, the chipmaker announced Friday.

Barrett joined Intel in 1974 and served as CEO from 1998 through 2005. More recently, he has focused his efforts on bringing technology to developing countries, an effort he highlighted during his 2009 CES keynote.

Independent director Jane Shaw, who joined the Intel board in 1993, will serve as as non-executive chairman beginning in May.

“Intel became the world’s largest and most successful semiconductor company in 1992 and has maintained that position ever since,” Barrett said in a statement. “I’m extremely proud to have helped achieve that accomplishment and to have the honor of working with tens of thousands of Intel employees who every day put their talents to use to make Intel one of the premier technology companies in the world. I have every confidence that Intel will continue this leadership under the direction of Paul Otellini and his management team.”

MSI’s Wind U120 netbook is go for purchase

The Wind U120 has been drifting around for months now in the minds of undersized laptop aficionados, and being that you’ve already heard it talked up, seen it ripped apart and perused a gallery full of hands-on images, all’s that left to do is break out the plastic. Yeah, we know — $469.99 is tough to hand over even for a rather respectable 10-inch netbook, but at least you get a six-cell battery, right?

[Thanks, Abigail]

LG’s VX9600 Versa phone makes its debut before the camera

We’ve already seen a few screens and sketches, but LG’s new VX9600 (or Versa) has proven to be pretty camera shy for a phone with so much to show off — until now, that is. Those pics above come courtesy of HowardForums member Snap315, who also has a few more available for your perusal at the link below. The standout here, as you can see, is the detachable QWERTY keyboard module, which is just one of a number of promised detachable modules for the phone, including a gamepad, a pair of speakers, and an internet module with integrated WiFi. Unfortunately, there’s still no word on a release date, but these pics would seem to suggest that it’ll be coming sooner rather than later.

[Thanks, Hey Ya]

Verizon Hub “landline slayer” officially unveiled

We’ve been on the trail of the Verizon Hub since way back when it was called the Verizon One, in fact, but it’s just been officially announced, and there are plenty of details to report now. The system boasts a 7-inch touchscreen display, and will work with Verizon wireless subscribers handset(s) to eliminate the need for a landline (people still have those!?) The idea here is that the hub can sync to your calendar, contacts, maps, traffic and weather reports via broadband. It can also send and receive text messages, and do all kinds of cute little tasks like send driving directions to your phone. Subscribers have to live in an E911-capable area, and will be able to bring any phone number with them if they want to sign up for new service. The hardware’s going to cost $200 (after a $50 mail-in rebate) with a subscription fee of $35 per month — which comes with unlimited minutes and texts to and from the device. It’ll be available starting February 1st. Get ready.

Brooklyn Pastry Chef Crafts Perfect, Gigantic Wiimote Cake

Last week, a 9-year-old boy received the birthday cake of his life in the form of a giant Wiimote.

At the request of one very loving parent, pastry chef Roshel Michaeli from Schicks Gourmet Bakery got to work meticulously measuring the Wiimote before scaling it to feed a small to medium army of children. The chocolate cake with mousse filling was coated with (edible) rolled fondant, depicting the Wiimote’s buttons in perfect detail—including even a properly shaped expansion port in the bottom.

The custom cake cost $360, but we have a feeling that it’s a memory the child will not soon forget. Though without a strap, this thing will make a huge mess all over the TV. [Thanks Jack!]

Researchers tout new 60GHz RF chip for high-speed wireless transfers

It’s not the only group toying around in the 60GHz frequency range, but a team of researchers from Georgia Tech’s Georgia Electronic Design Center seem to be a bit further along than most, and they say that their new 60GHz RF chip could pave the way into a whole host of new, speedier wireless devices. Apparently, the chip is the first 60GHz embedded chip designed for multi-gigabit wireless use, and the researchers have already pushed it to some pretty impressive lengths, reaching speeds of 15Gbps at a distance of 1 meter, 10Gbps at 2 meters, and 5Gbps at 5 meters, while also maintaining the lowest “energy per bit” to date. What’s more, while it’s been flying a bit under the radar, the industry group Ecma International has already announced a new standard for chips capable of sending RF signals in the 60GHz range, which is apparently expected to be published as an ISO standard later this year.

Jolicloud’s Beautifully Designed Netbook Linux OS

I agree with designer Tariq Krim that we’ve yet to see an OS interface perfectly implemented to a netbook’s uniquely small hardware. Hence Jolicloud, and judging from this UI shot, he’s on to something.

Yes, this is what our netbooks need: clear, big app icons (big enough to be touchable) on scrollable page a la the iPhone OS, an easy installer interface for quickly adding more, constant access to a universal search bar, all presented in a clean, clear and colorful design scheme.

Jolicloud isn’t out yet, but you can track its progress here: [Jolicloud, Jolicloud Flickr Stream via Crunch Gear and BBG]
