Fujifilm FinePix F200 EXR’s photos shown off

We were fairly hopeful that Fujifilm’s recently revealed 12 megapixel FinePix F200 EXR point and shoot would produce some great looking shots. Well, the fine folks over at Impress Watch have gotten their hands on one and taken it for a spin. In case you’ve forgotten, the camera is Fuji’s first offering to boast its new 1/1.6-inch Super CCD EXR sensor, and it’s got a 3-inch LCD, a 28-mm wide-angle 5x zoom lens, and is capable of 640 x 480 AVI video recording. The photos we’re seeing are very crisp and detailed, with excellent color and very low noise. Though we won’t know until we see for ourselves (still no word on pricing or availability for this one), we’re preliminarily impressed. Check a few more after the break — hit the read for full comparison shots with explanations.

Panasonic Toughbook 52: Latest to Get Touch-Screen Capabilities

Panasonic_Toughbook_CF-52.jpg

We were already fans of the Panasonic Toughbook CF-52, the company’s semi-rugged laptop (and the line’s first shot at the consumer marketplace), when we reviewed it back in the fall of 2007. The only complaint we raised about this feature-rich laptop its high cost (a staggering $3,300, for our test configuration). Thankfully, the system has come down in price since then, and Panasonic has just announced a few extra goodies to sweeten the pot.

The biggest update is the addition of a 13-inch touch screen option for the 52, but other new features include an adjustable dual overhead keyboard light, and a 1,000 nit anti-glare, anti-reflective screen option for easier outdoor viewing. More after the jump!

Special thanks to Pentax for providing the gear!

The rules:

  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.

Ideum MT2 multitouch table surfaces, looks to replace museum curators

Ideum designs has unveiled a multitouch table targeted specifically for the museum crowd. The MT2 Table is composed of aircraft-grade aluminum and sports a 50-inch tempered glass widescreen display with 1280 x 720 resolution and 2000:1 contrast ratio — that’s a good deal larger than Microsoft Surface and its 30-inch screen. The DLP-based projector system has 2100 ANSI brightness and a 3,000-hour bulb life. Tactile response is measured via dual-camera IR system, and the whole thing is powered by a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 512MB, 4GB RAM, 1250GB HDD, and Windows XP. Each table comes bundled with Swedish-based Natural User Interface’s Snowflake software and lets you create your own apps using Flash, Java, Python, and C/C++/C#. According to the press release, the first owners will be the Don Harrington Discovery Center in Amarillo, Texas and Vulcan Park and Museum in Birmingham, Alabama — doesn’t look like they’re vying for the coveted DJ Roker demographic. Video of the table in action embedded after the break.

Rubik Returns with Rubiks Sphere

rubik360.jpg

Professor Erno Rubik has made a career out of frustrating us and making us all feel a little, well … stupid. Oh, he also provided hours of entertainment with his iconic Cube, launched in the ’80s. Ladies and gentlemen, the nutty professor is back: and his new Rubik’s Cube is badder than ever.

Rubik’s 360 looks like something out of a sci-fi movie, but that belies the new, less cerebral sine qua non of the game. Instead of matching those colorful, infuriating squares in the perfect order, the new game requires players to shake six balls into six spheres within one large sphere. To do this, you have to shake those balls through one of two holes in the center of the clear sphere to their appropriately colored home. Sounds like good, frustrating fun–and exercise.

Rubik’s 360 looks like a work of art. And indeed, the original is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. When released later this year, Rubik’s 360 promises to bring what the original gave our parents–a beautifully designed puzzle that makes us work our hands and our brains.

Nine-Year-Old Prodigy Writes iPhone App

3256026686_ca044033e8
Software companies big and small should live in fear of Lim Ding Wen — a nine-year-old in Singapore who’s already authored an iPhone application.

His painting app Doodle Kids, free in the iPhone App Store, doesn’t do much besides scatter colorful triangles, squares and plus signs on a virtual canvas, but he’s way ahead of his time. Doodle Kids has been downloaded 4,000 times over the past two weeks.

"I wrote the program for my younger sisters, who like to draw," Lim told Reuters.

Lim started using a computer at age 2. He is fluent in six programming languages, and he’s completed 20 programming projects. Lim is wise to get an early start on the App Store, where some developers are striking it rich with their iPhone apps. For example, independent developer Steve Demeter, said he made $250,000 in just two months with his iPhone game Trism.

Lim’s father Lim Thye Chean is a chief technology officer who also writes iPhone applications.

With Doodle Kids complete, Lim is already working on his next iPhone app: a science fiction game called Invader Wars.

Dick Cheney Has a Kindle

President Obama has his BlackBerry (and possibly a Zune…) and now former Vice President Dick Cheney has a Kindle.

When he is not predicting catastrophic nuclear attacks under the Obama administration, Cheney is curling up with a good war-related novel, care of Amazon’s e-reader.

“Suddenly a man of leisure, Cheney has a Kindle, Amazon’s wireless reading device, and said he used it recently to read James M. McPherson’s new ‘Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief,'” according to Politico.com.

Perhaps he was persuaded by Oprah’s endorsement. However, those looking to follow in Cheney’s footsteps will have to wait. The Kindle has been sold out since early December, and is still not in stock, according to Amazon.com.

So what else should the former VP be downloading to his Kindle?

Steve Wozniak Joins Enterprise Storage Company

Steve Wozniak is known for a lot of things: co-founding Apple, pioneering Segway Polo, and seeing Kathy Griffith naked. Now the Woz is getting ready to add one more item to that illustrious list of accomplishments: head of an enterprise storage company.

Fusion-io today announced that Wozniak will be coming on board as the company’s chief scientist, acting as a technical advisor to its R&D group. According to a statement issued today, “[h]e will also work closely with the executive team of Fusion-io in formulating a company strategy that will accelerate the expansion of major global accounts.”

“With the revolutionary technological advances being made by Fusion-io, the company is in the right place at the right time with the right technology and ready to direct the history of technology into the 21st century and beyond,” said Wozniak of the announcement. “The technology marketplace has not seen such capacity for innovation and radical transformation since the mainframe computer was replaced by the home computer. Fusion-io’s technology is extremely useful to many different applications and almost all of the world’s servers.”
