Editors’ Choice: Energy Take Classic speaker system

Energy Take Classic(Credit: Energy Speakers/Klipsch)

Finding surround-sound speakers that sound great isn’t that difficult. Of course, if you want them to be small and inexpensive, those criteria raise the bar significantly. That’s why the Energy Take Classic is a doubly impressive product. The 5.1 speaker package is a “…

Palm Pre handled, handed out to celebrities?

There seems to be no shortage of chatter about celebrities and their new Palm handsets today. We already knew that stars attending the Independent Spirit Awards would be getting a swag bag containing — among other things — a Palm Pre, and based on the coverage we’re seeing from the event (held on the 21st), they at least got to handle them. It’s actually difficult to say if Palm was giving the device out that night or putting people on a waiting list, but what it does make clear is that the Pre can’t be too far from launch if the company felt comfortable enough to throw them into such an uncontrolled setting. Does this mean the release date is nearer than we think, or is Palm just hoping that a little of that star power rubs off on the phone? Either way, we’re super jealous of Eliza Dushku.

Update: According to a Tweet from Palm (which links this post — meta!), these were just there to be played with, not handed out.

[Thanks, Marques]

Cowon gets official with D2+ PMP

Cowon’s D2 portable media player never was much of a looker, and needless to say, neither is the replacement D2+. This somewhat bulky PMP sports a bezel that’s remarkably thick, though it does boast a built-in DMB TV tuner, SD / SDHC / MMC expansion slot, FM radio, USB 2.0 connectivity and BBE+ sound enhancement. There’s no apparent word on pricing, but we suspect Cowon will clear that up whenever this thing pops official in the North American market. A few more pics are waiting in the read link if you’re still undecided on the design.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Gigabyte plans CeBIT debut for M1022, M1024 and M1028 netbooks

We already knew that Gigabyte was planning to wow onlookers in Hanover with its touchscreen convertible netbook (that’d be the M1028; pictured), but now we’re finding that it’ll be joined by two others when things get kicked off around a week from now. Reportedly, two other 10-inch netbooks will be showcased to the world at CeBIT: the M1022 and the Atom N270-equipped M1024. It’s said that the latter will simply be a thinner and lighter version of the M1028, while the M1022 will get gifted with Intel’s newer N280 processor. Beyond that, details are few and far between, but hopefully we’ll get all up in their system profiles in a few days.

Blu-spec: Sony’s latest CD format

If CDs really are on their way out, Sony is ready with their replacement: Blu-spec CDs.

Although details about the new format, launched in Japan in November, are somewhat scant, we do know that users won’t need a new player for Blu-spec CDs.

“The Blu-spec CD format boasts a …

Dell's Mini 10 comes with any amount of RAM you want, so long as it's 1GB

The case of the Mini 10 just gets curiouser and curiouser. The company finally acknowledged the red-lidded QVC stepchild on its site just last week, but before that quietly mentioned an interesting bit of information on its official blog: the 1GB of memory figure that seemed like just a start is actually the end, too. The RAM in the first batch (or possibly batches) of Mini 10 models will be non-upgradable, and while we don’t know why a company that built itself on allowing people to customize computers would prevent them from upgrading their netbooks, we are sure this won’t be a popular move. Additionally, the first Mini 10s will all be running XP, though Ubuntu will be coming, as well as an optional 720P display and even a TV tuner. That all sounds fantastic, but after waiting through all this is anyone going to wait longer still for a proper-spec’d machine?

[Thanks, Eric]

World gets updated Samsung P3, US still gets none

World gets updated Samsung P3, US gets none

It was hard to give back Samsung’s P3 after caressing it for a few moments at CES, knowing we’d be sadly separated for at least a few months waiting for an indeterminate release date sometime before July. Today that official arrival is still just as vague, but now our hearts yearn just a little more with Samsung updating and extending the functionality of the player, adding the ability to play native resolution 800 x 600 video, enabling support for video subtitles in SMIs, adding mosaic browsing for videos, and throwing in a fun little drawing application to boot. A full (and jazzy) video breakdown of the new features is embedded below, which people on the fence about S9 now or P3 later won’t want to miss.

AT-AT Walker Boombox Is So Awesome I Want to Cry

The only way this stunning AT-AT walker boombox could produce a more forceful nerdOMFGasm is if it was being straddled by Scarlett Johansson in a Princess Leia bikini.

The $1.94 reason micro-USB is the new phone charging standard

Yep, we’re all gonna get squeezed for accessories again as the member companies of the GSM Association begin standardizing on micro-USB chargers, and while we’re happy that the madness is over, we can’t help but feel the decision to use micro-USB over the already-ubiquitous mini-USB was purely greed-driven — sure, micro-USB’s supposedly more robust connector can handle something like 10x more disconnects, but if mini is good enough for everything from pro-level DSLRs to rugged portable hard drives, it’s probably good enough for your average flip phone, don’t you think? Sigh.

NASA to Launch Europa, Titan Missions

NASA_Europa_Titan.jpg

NASA announced at a meeting in Washington that it will continue to pursue sending a mission to Jupiter and its four largest moons, as well as plan another mission to Saturn to visit Titan and Enceladus.

NASA said that the Europa Jupiter System Mission will focus on a Europa Orbiter to explore that icy moon of Jupiter and its subsurface water ocean. Although much of the talk about possible life elsewhere in our solar system centers around Mars, astronomers have long maintained that Europa, one of Jupiter’s four largest moons, could also harbor life. The mission would launch probes in 2020 and followup orbiters in 2026.

The Titan Saturn System Mission, meanwhile, would center around an orbiter, a lander, and a research balloon; its launch date is so far unspecified. In a statement, the agency called the proposed missions “grand endeavors that set the stage for future planetary science research.”
