Not long after Sprint announced the LG Rumor 2, Alltel announced the LG Banter, which is really just a rebranded version of the LG Rumor 2. It has a slightly different design, but the specs are about the same.

It has stereo Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel …

MetroPCS landed its first smartphone this week when it introduced the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8330. The handset has all the features you’d expect from a BlackBerry device, which is to say it goes far beyond the majority of MetroPCS phones. …

Sneek peek at latest trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum

Here it is. It’s the latest trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum. The trailer is set to air Thursday night on MTV, but fortunately for us, Stephen Totilo, from MTV’s Multiplayer, decided to post it early for everyone to drool over.

It starts off with a great Joker narration (…

Sony Ericsson’s Idou stylus gets pictured, piques interests

We’ve already investigated every single nook and crannie involved in Sony Ericsson’s 12 megapixel Idou, but here’s something we haven’t seen: an associated stylus. It’s difficult to tell at the moment if SE plans to toss this in with the Idou (or whatever it ends being called) like Nokia did when it threw in a guitar pick with the 5800 XpressMusic, but either way, you can consider our interest piqued. Not that we’re fans of using a stylus over our own digits, mind you, but we are fond of random, if not unnecessary accessories. Save the lecture, we realize that’s odd.

[Thanks, Jesper]

Patent Alert: Apple Looking into Wii-like Controller for Apple TV

appletvwandpatent.jpg

Apple computers, meet the Wiimote. In a customary bit of patent digging, Apple Insider happened upon plans for a “wireless remote wand,” which would give users motion sensing controls over the Apple TV, a la Nintendo’s popular console.

The proposed device utilizes an accelerometer or gyroscope to control the system with three-dimensional movements. Also:

The wand may include an optical component for capturing images of the infrared modules, and may calculate its orientation and distance from the modules based on the captured images. In some embodiments, the electronic device may direct the infrared modules to identify the position of an infrared emitter incorporated on the wand, and may calculate the absolute position of the wand relative to the infrared modules.

Apple recently introduced a new version of the Apple TV, so I’m guessing we’ll have to wait at least a year for something like this to come to fruition–if in fact it ever does.

Call to Arms: The International Space Station Needs Lasers

OK, let’s cut the crap here, NASA: After today’s near-evacuation, it’s clear that you need weapons on the International Space Station. And don’t forget to put web controls so we all can play.

Seriously now: This is seriously fraked up. The ISS is almost as big as a Corellian corvette and it’s up there defenseless, floating peacefully, sitting like a dinosaur-sized duck, waiting for one of the 18,000 pieces of tracked space debris to crack it open and take it down in a fiery ball of junk.

Sure, they have a escape spaceship for astronauts. In case things go bad—like they almost did today—they can jump in there and fly away before the worst happens. However, after all the money and effort put in the only human post in space, do we want to send everything to hell for a piece of orbiting crap? Wouldn’t it be better to install defense mechanisms against space debris—or, ah, hmmm, alien ships!—to preserve the ISS?

Technically, there are already weapon systems that may be altered to perform this task, but this is not an easy task. We know it is not as easy as firing a laser and taking down the incoming chunk of metal with a Star Wars explosion.

There’s a lot of things to be taken into account. First, you will need to detect the threat and fire from a very long distance, so the resulting effect doesn’t cause any harm to the ISS itself. Then, the method to take down the object will change depending on its nature. Is it a big satellite or just a big chunk of metal from a previous collision? Does the incoming object have explosive elements inside? If the object is too big and can’t be obliterated in a single shot, perhaps it would be better to have some kind of rocket that may approach the object and change its orbit by exploding near it? Perhaps some kind of emergency tug that can attach to the object and take it down?

We don’t know. Whatever NASA and its international partner can come up with, they need to do it as soon as possible. Things are getting complicated up there, and this doesn’t conflict with the international protocols against the militarization of space—which, in any case, are being constantly violated by the US, Russia, and China.

This will be a defense mechanism against space threats, and that’s exactly what the ISS needs. It is just too valuable to be left there with no protection. NASA, it’s time to get some pew pew action going on up there.

Version 2.10 beta firmware makes your Cowon S9 a new PMP

Slowly but surely, Cowon has been issuing firmware updates to make its sleek S9 PMP the music player it ought to be. According to a recent leak of the v2.10 beta, it’s about to become even more formidable a rival. Reportedly, the forthcoming update — which can be downloaded now for those kosher with all things beta — adds in support for widgets, WMV7/8, pitch correction, full screen mode in TV-out and color tags for subtitles. As for improved functionality, we’re heard that the entire navigation process has been smoothed over, particularly in the area of browser scrolling. Check the read link for a download URL as well as the full changelog, and if that lucky individual that won our S9 giveaway doesn’t give this a go and report back, you all have to right to throw stones until he / she does.

Fully Equipped: Apple to shift to voice interface for iPods, iPhones?

I recently trashed the third-generation Shuffle in a blog post, saying it was “a disaster.” Well, I meant it. A button-less, tiny, entry-level MP3 with special “VoiceOver” features just seems so unnecessary. But then a reader made an interesting point to me. What if the lede got buried in Apple’…
