When I told CNET audio editor Donald Bell about the Flat, Flexible Loudspeaker out of the U.K.’s University of Warwick, he immediately imagined subway posters shouting at him. And he’…
While we caught this at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Samsung officially launched its WiMAX / WiFi Mondi at CTIA today. Samsung’s SWD-M100 MID runs Windows Mobile — and we have to say that it looks really polished — with the transitions between homescreen panels being particularly stunning — check the vid to see it in action. While thin, the popout lower lip keypad is a tough thing to use, the width of the keypad itself and the positioning of the d-pad make it all seem a bit awkward to use. We do like the 4.3-inch display, though suspect it may prove to be a tad power hungry once this gets a little more real on Clear‘s WiMAX network. Follow on for a short vid and a handful of pics of us playing with this big glossy thing.
While Clearwire’s Clear Spot (which is really just a refashioned PHS-300) will handle WiMAX right out of the box, those who own one of CradlePoint’s existing portable routers are flat out of luck… or are they? Said company has just announced that starting today, shipments of its business-class routers — including the MBR800, MBR1000, and MBR1100 line of mobile broadband routers, CTR500 mobile broadband travel router, and CBA250 cellular broadband adapter — will have WiMAX compatibility built in. Furthermore, a forthcoming (April 6th) firmware update will enable existing CradlePoint products to accept select WiMAX devices, and yes, it’ll be made available for no charge at all. Talk about throwing a bone to your loyal customers.
My first stop this morning at CTIA was to the LG booth, particularly to take a closer look at the LG Xenon, which was announced earlier this week. The Xenon is quite svelte at 4.16 inches long by 2.11 inches wide by …

Have you ever been on a page with a ton of animated GIF’s, and all you’re trying to do is read the content? It can get quite distracting, but if you’re using Firefox or Internet Explorer just hit the ESC key. Doing so will immediately pause all of the animated GIF images on the page. Go ahead, try it with this image:
The only bad part about pausing the images using the ESC key is that there’s no way to have them resume without refreshing the page.
One thing that I’ve never understood about browsers is why they don’t have a play, pause, and restart options on the right-click menu for GIF animations. That would be a really nice feature to have, but Firefox and Opera users do have a few advanced settings for GIF animations:
–Firefox Users Only–
In Firefox you can also completely disable GIF animations, or only allow them to play through one time. Here’s what you have to do:
In the Location Bar type about:config and hit Enter
Type “animation” in the Filter field (to quickly find the needed preference)
Double-click the image.animation_mode line and edit it to one of the following:
none — will prevent image animation
once — will let the image animate once
normal (default) — will allow it to play over and over
–Opera Users Only–
If you want to completely disable GIF animations in Opera here’s what you have to do:
We’ve already seen the SmartQ 5 MID out in the wild, and even sporting Ubuntu, but those sitting on pins and needles for the inevitable unboxing can now finally rest easy, as Kam Leung has stepped up and done the honors. From the looks of it, however, there’s nothing but the bare minimum included with the 4.3-inch MID / PMP although, judging from the pics, SmartQ may have been wise to at least include a dust cloth. Hit up the link below for the full show, and then start figuring out the best way to import one of these if you’re sold on it, as there’s still no word of an official release ’round here.
You want to take your tunes on the road, but headphones don’t always cut it, and even the smallest home speakers and receivers/amplifiers aren’t portable. Technology has come to the rescue with a new breed of portable speakers that sound a lot …
