Japanese Packaging: Fukasawa Juice Boxes

Product packaging in Japan is known for being wasteful at times (such as plastic-filled combini bento), but also for being functional and eye-catching. These juice box designs from designer Naoto Fukasawa (of plusminuszero fame – shop link) not only tell you what’s inside by sight and touch, but (at least for me) they make you taste it.

As far as we know, the Takara Banana is the only one that has made it to market at this point. With the growing eco movement in Japan, perhaps we’ll be seeing organic packages made from the product inside in the near future. Banana skins are used more and more in textiles, but kiwi’s and and strawberries may prove to be more of a challenge.

Apple, Verizon mulling iPhone deal for next year?

We’ve been down this path countless times, but rumors are once again heating up that Apple and Verizon are actively discussing the possibility of creating an iPhone to work on Big Red’s airwaves, according to USA Today’s infamous “people familiar with the situation.” The juicy gossip claims that discussions kicked off a few months ago when Steve was still running the day-to-day show out in Cupertino, but that the conversation has continued in his absence — and they’d like to get a product on the shelves next year, likely much to AT&T’s chagrin. The article claims that this would be a CDMA product, but given that Verizon boss Ivan Seidenberg himself ruled out a CDMA iPhone and opened the door for an LTE one, we’re inclined to believe that the carrier would like to see this product help inaugurate the first slivers of its commercial 4G network in 2010. Since AT&T (along with the rest of the world) is moving toward LTE, an LTE-powered iPhone is a forgone conclusion — it’s really just a question of when Apple will make it happen and whether Verizon will be able to seal the deal.

IBM Prepping ‘Watson’ Computer to Compete on Jeopardy!

IBM, not content to merely crush the spirits of chess masters like Garry Kasparov, have started working with Jeopardy! to create a supercomputer that will undoubtedly answer questions more accurately than Sean Connery.

The supercomputer, dubbed simply as a “Question Answering” system, is named Watson. Designers believe it will have the speed and “understanding” necessary to research, buzz in, and then answer questions fast enough to compete on the popular game show. But it’s not Google, engineers say. Don’t you dare call it Google.

And as you can see in the video, Alex Trebek is totally for it, going so far as to appear as though all his lines were prepared by IBM PR. Anything to avoid having to face off against your mortal enemy Sean Connery, eh Trebek? [YouTube – Thanks, blam!]

Samsung Omnia Pro with landscape QWERTY coming this summer?

This is totally unsubstantiated, but also totally plausible — likely, even — so we wanted to pass along a hot rumor out of Italian site hdblog.it claiming that there’ll be a QWERTY-equipped Omnia Pro hitting the market in the coming months, and they’ve even crafted a mockup looking like the offspring of an F700 and an original Omnia to illustrate their point. Specifically, the rumor suggests that the Omnia Pro will run Windows Mobile 6.1 upgradeable to 6.5 — which might explain Sammy’s decision to back off the OmniaHD branding for the Symbian-powered i8950 — along with a 5 megapixel cam and sweet 3.5-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Considering that the old Omnia is widely considered to be one of the company’s better (and more successful) smartphones in recent memory, it certainly stands to reason that they’d want to carry on the legacy — and slapping on a sliding landscape keyboard seems like a no-brainer way to do it. To top things off, gossip has this sucker launching this summer for something in the range of €500 ($662), which throws it face-first into this summer’s superphone smackdown alongside the N97, the GSM Pre, and whatever Apple has up its sleeves. Fun time to be alive, isn’t it?

ANTARES smashes earbuds and MP3 player together, produces KPMP316

Not that we haven’t seen MP3 players integrated into earbuds before, but we’ve yet to see any that give us more inspiration than these. Seriously, just look at this guy above — pumping iron, resisting the urge to shoot up a fine dose of ‘roids and getting all the motivation he needs from the Rick Astley jams that are undoubtedly streaming through. ANTARES’ KPMP316 DAP consists entirely of two enlarged earbuds and a cord to keep ’em close; as you can imagine, the 1/2/4GB of internal capacity, play / pause button and volume rocker are all positioned just millimeters away from the actual drivers. Folks over in Asia can supposedly snag one in yellow, green, orange, blue, purple or black, but we’ve no idea what kind of outlay you’ll be looking at.

Yahoo’s New Messenger 9.0 Beta is Spiffy!

This article was written on October 30, 2007 by CyberNet.

new yahoo messenger A new version of Yahoo Messenger is launching today with all kinds of new features. Among the changes in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 beta are a redesigned interface. With over 94 million users, it’s an important communication tool for many people.  The changes that they’ve made will make communication among the millions of users easier, and perhaps even more enjoyable. It will also allow users to take personalization to a whole new level.

Features include:

  • Forward calls and instant messages
  • New integrated Yahoo! Address Book – add, view, edit contact list from Messenger
  • Personalize your messenger background with a new “skin”
  • Watch videos with friends — just send your friend a link to a video and an inline player will be displayed in the conversation window for you and your friend to watch at the same time
  • Share maps — meeting up with a friend? Send them a map of where you’re meeting
  • Share photos from Flickr photostream right in the IM Window

Another big feature involves emoticons.  Thanks to the “Emoticontest” that Yahoo held in June, there are several new emoticon’s.  They include “thumbs up,” “thumbs down,” “rock on,” “it wasn’t me,” “don’t want to see it,” and “hurry up.” These emoticons can now be used in your status message so that your family and friends will know your mood just from looking at the emoticon you’ve selected to display.

Overall I’d say they made some great changes, and ones that will make the Yahoo Messenger experience that much better.  The most creative change was the integration of videos into messenger by allowing you to watch a movie without needing to go to your web browser! If you’d like more info on all of the changes, Yahoo put together a great video preview which you can find here.

You know, the release of this Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 beta leaves me wondering when they’re ever going to launch Yahoo! Messenger specifically for Vista. Remember that? Back in January they launched a preview and some screenshots of what it was going to look like, and it was pretty amazing. Unfortunately the site they created for it still says “Coming Soon!”

Compro showcases VideoMate T1000W network media streamer

We can’t tell you precisely how much we’ve been yearning for an L-shaped media streamer, but we can tell you that Compro has made the hopes, dreams and wishes of quite a few content junkies come true with the debut of its VideoMate T1000W. Showcased late last week at SecuTech Expo 2009, this network media streamer is an all-in-one solution that handles content shuffling, TV tuning, internal storing of files, expansion ports, WiFi access, support for USB DVD players and even BitTorrent files. As expected, pretty much any file format you could think of is supported here, though the DVB-T tuner won’t do us Yanks much good in the homeland. Fudzilla asserts that the unit should hit shelves overseas this May, though the £200 ($293) price tag just might scare away most potential buyers.

Video: robotic marimba player grooves autonomously with jazz pianist

We’ve seen an orchestra’s worth of robotic musicians, but we’ve yet to see one that integrates this perfectly into a piece without any human intervention. Shimon — a robotic marimba player created by Georgia Tech’s Guy Hoffman (formerly of MIT), Gil Weinberg (the director of the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology) and Roberto Aimi of Alium Labs — recently made its stage debut by sensing the music from a piano and reacting accordingly in order to provide complementary percussion. Unlike many alternatives, there’s absolutely no delay here. Instead, it analyzes the classification of chords, estimates the human’s tempo and attempts to extract features from the human’s melodic phrases and styles. What you’re left with a robot musician that goes beyond call-and-response and actually meshes with the Earthling’s playing throughout. The full performance is posted after the break, and make sure to leave a donation as you exit through the doors on the left.

[Thanks, Guy!]

Flip Video Ultra HD makes its unofficial debut, gets unboxed

Thanks Best Buy, we owe you (another) one. Yet again, the big box retailer everyone loves to hate has provided the world with a glimpse of a heretofore unannounced product, and this one’s got our mouths all kinds of damp. Barely a month after Cisco picked up Pure Digital for a small fortune, the Flip Video Ultra HD — which seems to be the natural successor to the standard Ultra — has already begun to hit select store shelves in America. Notable niceties include an HDMI output, 120 minutes of record time (up from 60 minutes), a removable / rechargeable battery and support for AA cells in a pinch. We’re still waiting for the full rundown of specifications (and the price, too), but feel free to tap the read link for a stellar unboxing in the meanwhile.

Update: Looks like it’s going for $199.99. Thanks Matthies!
