Palm Pre makes conspicuous appearance at large gathering of cool people

We don’t know a lot about driving cars really fast, but we do know one thing: this guy sure does seem excited about the prospect of a touchscreen-driven, QWERTY-equipped slider smartphone with webOS, from struggling handset manufacturer Palm. Apparently at some point during the race somebody from Sprint confirmed that they’ll be outing a launch date in the “next couple of days.” We like the sound of that.

Home built massage chair strikes inexpugnable fear into aching joints

It’s important to remember that when we make inevitable war with the machines, it was really all our fault — take this guy Lin, for example. Sure, he means well, building this massage chair out of scrap for his aging wife, who suffers from joint pain, but future generations scraping together a meager existence as they huddle for protection from homicidal robots and a rage-filled Christian Bale won’t be exactly forgiving of Lin’s plight. “Why couldn’t he just travel backwards in time to stop the joint pain before it started?” they’ll ask. “Didn’t he know he was endangering the entire human race?”

Official AOL Toolbar Beta Released For Firefox

This article was written on December 26, 2005 by CyberNet.

AOL has released a beta version of a toolbar for Firefox. I am not a huge fan of AOL and currently only use the Google toolbar (which is beyond useful). However, I do know that there are AOL fans out there so you might want to check out this OFFICIAL AOL Toolbar for Firefox!

Vanna White loves Slingbox on her iPhone — if only she could find three Gs!

At what appeared to be a totally wild and awesome search for Wheel of Fortune contestants in a mall, Vanna White confessed on camera her deep love of gadgets, particularly her excitement about Slingbox and the new Slingbox app for the iPhone. We suppose it’s fitting for somebody who’s been playing with touchscreens since before most of us knew how to spell “technology,” though it’s really too bad she can’t enjoy her daily The Price Is Right fix without hunting down a WiFi connection first. In an even more bizarre twist, it turns out Vanna White sued Samsung back in 1993 for using a robot that looked like her (pictured) in an advertisement. You may be a “geek girl,” Vanna, but we bet your robotic doppelganger is using VOIPover3G with SlingPlayer on her Jailbroken iPhone right this second. The brief segment of her talking about Sling starts at the 2:06 mark, the video is after the break.

[Thanks, Lonny P.]

Sony confirms new Alpha 230, 330 and 380 mainstream DSLRs

Sony’s been pretty generous with the Alpha leaks in the run up to this launch, but it looks like this new trio of DSLRs for “first time” SLR buyers, the Alpha 230, 330 and 380, is ready to go. The press release confirms all of what we already knew, along with bringing word that the cameras will support SD/SDHC cards in addition to Sony’s still-kicking Memory Stick format. The best news is in pricing, however: the shooters will retail in two different kit types, with the L-series cams ringing in at $550, $650 and $850, respectively, when paired with the SAL-1855 standard zoom lens. The Y kit series adds a second lens, the telephoto SAL-55200, along with bumping the kit price $200 across the board. Pre-orders will start on May 18th, with the cameras becoming available in July. Oddly, while parts of the press site are live, the press shots are still on lockdown, beyond a nice stack of thumbnails — we’ll keep you posted.

Apple may (or may not) be mulling background apps for the iPhone

Whether it be case materials and design, native iPhone app development, or video support on the iPod, Apple’s not a company to apologize for drastically (and suddenly) changing course. Strategically that’s to the company’s benefit, since it keeps the competition guessing; for consumers, though, it’s a nightmare trying to figure out whether the device you buy today will be dismissed as passé in a heavily-liveblogged Jobs or Schiller press conference the next week. iPhone OS versions 2.0 and 3.0 have gone a long way toward addressing some of the iPhone’s well-publicized shortcomings — clipboard support, MMS, better orientation change support, notifications, the list goes on — but one biggie that Apple has so far refused to take out of the penalty box is background app support.

A number of sources this week are reporting that Apple is now investigating ways to make background processes work, though it’s apparently early in development and the company is still investigating options; one would be to limit background apps to a total of two, another would require that background-capable apps meet certain criteria (presumably to limit processor utilization) before getting App Store approval. The company has invested a lot of time — way too much time, actually — crafting its push notification infrastructure designed specifically to get around the need for background processes in many common cases, which makes it seem terribly unlikely that they’d reverse so quickly. While it’s true that every other modern smartphone platform supports them, Apple has all but perfected the art and science of ignoring its competitors’ game plans.

Any way you slice it, it’s a near certainty that the next-gen iPhone will bump processor and memory specs, which makes background processing a more palatable concept — thing is, battery technology has barely evolved in over a decade, and that’s ultimately the roadblock to letting an iPhone (or any other cordless device) run wild. What’s more, requiring the user to choose their own two background apps seems totally counter to the “it just works” mantra that rules the iPhone’s dumbed-down interface.

Hell has a tendency to freeze over in Cupertino, though, so we can’t rule it out.

Volcano Boarding

volcano_surfing.jpg

Racing down with a board on an active volcano, turns out to be a fashionable activity. Thousands of travelers are heading to the foothills of Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro mountain to take part in the new sporting craze, started by Phillip Southan, owner and manager of Bigfoot Hostel and Green Pathways Tours.

Cerro Negro is considered one of Central America’s youngest most active volcano, which last erupted in 1999 – the 20th time in its history!

Casio EX-FS10 reviewed, slides 1000 fps capture into the back pocket of your mom jeans

Casio’s really blown out the feature list on the EX-FS10, and now PhotographyBLOG has taken the compact fashioncam through its paces. Sadly, like many modern compacts, straight up image quality is a bit scarce here, with obvious noise at ISO 200 and up, no optical image stabilization, and not even the silly 12 megapixel extravagance of its counterparts to blame it on — the EX-FS10 shoots 9 megapixel stills. The HD and slow-motion video recording is also severely hampered by a lack of zoom during shooting, bad sound, and the oversized AVI format. Still, the camera is incredibly well built, very slim, and it can pull off some really wild feats — 720p might be growing increasingly common, but 1000 fps slow motion, burst mode for stills and pre-record shutter lag adjustment make the FS10 quite unique in its category. It’s obviously a tradeoff, but at least there’s some good news: while the camera was supposedly slated to retail at around $450, it’s hovering pretty close to $300 at the moment.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCIX: Fake BlackBerry Storm adds some gold trim, beats the Storm 2 to clickscreen-free living

Well, no need to wait around for the Storm 2 to right all of the BlackBerry Storm’s wrongs, the Cool9500 is here to make it all better. Namely, the Cool9500 brings the all-important gold trim, something we always felt was a major shortcoming of RIM’s first stab at this form factor. There’s also an all-important TV tuner — another wild misstep in the original. Sure, we’ll miss SurePress and the usable software, but we’d say Cool9500 really hit RIM where it hurts with this impressive followup.

Giveaway: DVD Profiler – Manage Your DVD Library

This article was written on December 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

DVD Profiler Main

DVD Profiler is an essential application for all of the DVD collectors out there. It is used to track and organize your entire DVD collection in one central location. To make things really easy it contains up-to-date information on the latest DVD’s, HD-DVD’s, and Blu-Ray movies that are being released. Sorry, you won’t have to sit there and manually type in the DVD’s until your fingers fall off. ;)

The first time that I went to add a movie to DVD Profiler it had to download a 11.5MB file which contained a information for over 325,000 movies. After that I was able to instantly add movies that I owned according to UPC, manual lookup, a DVD that is currently in the drive, or by upcoming releases:

DVD Profiler Add Video

After you go through and add the videos that you want, DVD Profiler will download the box shots for each of them (front and back). One of the things that really impressed me was the tracking capabilities for movies you loan out to friends and family. You just create a user for each person, specify what movie rating they’re allowed to see (PG, PG-13, R, etc…), and you’ll be able to track who currently has some of your videos. You can even specify a due date. ;)

I can’t argue that this is a full-featured DVD management app, and after using this I’m doubtful that there is even a better one available!

–The Giveaway–

We have 3 licenses of DVD Profiler (valued at $29.95 each) to giveaway today! All you have to do is drop a comment below providing both your name and email address in the appropriate fields. We obviously need your email address for contacting you in the event that you should win. Believe it or not we’ve actually had winners in previous giveaways get randomly selected, but since they didn’t provide an email address we had to pick someone else.

Just as with all of our giveaways we will be using a random number generator to determine the winners. For this round here is how we’re going to give out the licenses:

  • 1 winner will be picked from comment numbers 1 through 10
  • 2 winners will be picked from comment numbers 1 through however many comments there are.

Entries for the giveaway will be accepted up until December 4th at 5:00PM Central Time.
