Kodak’s Zi8 HD pocket camcorder hits the 1080p mark, adds Facebook uploading

The Zi6 is still fairly fresh in our memory banks, but Kodak’s already looking ahead with its newly unveiled Zi8 pocket camcorder. The Flip Ultra HD competitor boasts 1080p recording this time around, in addition to usual features like face tracking, image stabilization, a 2.5-inch LCD display, and SD card slot. YouTube uploading is back, and joining it Facebook support, too. It’ll be out in September in blue, red, and black colors for just a hair under $180.

Microsoft giving Europeans with Windows XP and Vista choice of browser, too

As it turns out, it won’t just be Windows 7 that’ll be giving Europeans a choice of what web browser to use. In fact, the lengths that Microsoft is going to appease the European Commission is quite extreme. Ars Technica did some digging and here’s the fine print of the proposal. Within three to six months of the EC’s approval, an update will be sent out to Europeans with Windows XP and Vista, labeled “high priority” or “important.” User who install the update and have Internet Explorer as the default browser will see the ballot screen on next log in, which will show up to ten different browsers with at least a 0.5 percent share of the market in the European Economic Area (EEA). Users can then choose to download something new, ignore the screen, or defer until an indefinite time in the future. Windows 7 users will get the ballot update within two weeks of the Commission’s decision or by its October 22nd launch, whichever comes second. Extreme? You betcha — but we can’t argue over having more choice.

[Thanks, Adrian]

T-Mobile announces HTC Touch Pro2 for August 12 availability

Sure, the Touch Pro2 from HTC is available from a variety of carriers around the world at this point — but you won’t find many (read: none) that are offering it in the US right now, which makes T-Mobile’s launch especially notable. As expected, it’ll be hitting on August 12, bringing a 3.2 megapixel camera, AWS 3G, GPS, a glorious 3.6-inch WVGA display, WiFi, and that unique Straight Talk tech that should make the phone one of the best speakerphones you’ve ever used (frequent conference callers, take note). Pricing hasn’t been announced, but expect it in the lovely shade pictures above, which is being termed “mocha” (your choice of vocabulary may vary).

Xbox Live dashboard update preview invites begin rolling out

You’ve already read our thoughts on the new Xbox Live dashboard update, and now it’s time for those who put in their name for the preview program to join the fun. Microsoft today began sending invites that’ll get you set up for the download, so that you can enjoy Avatar marketplace and a slew of new Netflix options (and irksome restrictions for Starz Play titles). Registration is still open if you still want a shot at nabbing it before August 11th. Didn’t get an email? A second wave of invites is going out tomorrow, but also be sure to check the Connect site you registered at anyway, as Microsoft notes those who opted out of receiving emails will have no other way of confirming.

Toshiba’s inaugural 3.5-inch external HDD is exactly what you think it is

Good old Tosh is putting a little more heft on its drives, unveiling what the company cites as its first ever 3.5-inch external hard drive. It spins at 5400RPM, features USB 2.0 and eSATA output, and an aesthetic that’s easy on the eyes. Not much else to say about this space saver, but you can be sure it’s just the first of many that are in the pipeline. The presser says it’s available now, but we’ve been looking and have yet to find it on Toshiba’s retail site or other online retailers like Amazon. When it does show its face, expect it to cost $130 for the 640GB model and $160 for a cool 1TB.

Google Voice app GV Mobile ported to jailbroken iPhones, web app version in the works

So well-mannered, straight-laced iPhone users got a pretty big slap in the face yesterday by way of Apple’s (and AT&T’s, no doubt) total Google Voice rejection. Looks like jailbreakers are picking up the pieces, as GV Mobile developer Sean Kovacs — whose app was in the iTunes store for some time before being yanked yesterday — has ported the Voice client over to Cydia free of charge, although donations are gladly accepted. Even more interesting, but less concrete, Kovacs said he was already working on a web app version, possibly for submission to Palm’s app catalog. No word on the fate of GVdialer, an app that was also unceremoniously pulled, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it followed in similar footsteps.

Aabar Investments takes 32 percent stake in Virgin Galactic, we’re still not cool enough to go to space

United Arab Emirates company Aabar Investments and today announced that it would be taking a 32 percent stake in Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic space tourism venture, a deal worth about $280 million dollars. Though the deal has yet to be approved by US regulatory agencies, Aabar, which is an investment vehicle for Abu Dhabi’s government, said that it plans to build a spaceport in the capital city, and that it’s committed an addition $100 million to fund satellite launch capabilites. The deal gives Aabar the regional rights to host tourism as well as scientific research flights. When asked how they felt about having Richard Branson hanging around their city, reps from Aabar said, “King Crazy? We love that guy!”

Coke, FreeStyle

cokefreestyle.jpgIddictive.com: There’s more to Coca-Cola than just brown fizzy drinks. The company owns hundreds of brands and variations covering everything from juices to bottled waters.

Unfortunately, putting all those options on display in your local fast food outlet would be a little impractical – and so most dispensers stick to a few favourites. Although these options can be localised based on regional preferences, there are still a lot of people who walk away dissappointed with the (lack of) choice.

Enter ‘Freestyle’, Coke’s new RFID-based drinks dispenser that’s being trialled in selected US states this summer. The dispenser uses a touchscreen interface to allow customers to choose from over 100 different options, mixed to order from 30 different flavour cartridges.

Most interestingly, each cartridge is fitted with an RFID tag which feeds data on consumption to a reader built into the machine. The reader, in turn, sends the data via private network to Coke’s head office.
