Tone Audio’s Bob Gendron scored advance copies of “The Beatles Stereo Box Set” and “The Beatles Mono Box Set” of the complete Beatles catalog. Four years in the making, Gendron thinks the remasters are a feast for the ears.
Tone Audio is an audiophile Web site, so when I read Gendron’s claims of “Near-miraculous improvements in the key areas of information retrieval, hidden details, palpable physicality, expanded midrange, transient presence, and frequency response” to the remastered sound, I was jazzed. Bass, never a strong suit on Beatles recordings, has been improved, so we get to hear more oomph from Paul McCartney’s bass and Ringo Starr’s percussion. I can hardly wait.
Gendron seems to favor the mono box, mostly because the Beatles and their producer, George Martin, lavished their attention on the mono mixes of the original albums; stereo was an afterthought. Me, I’m a stereo kind of guy, so I’ll start with the stereo set. And yes, I’ll report back after I’ve had time to mull over the sound for myself. The Rolling Stones’ recent remasters are nothing to write home about, that’s why I’ve remained mum about them. Remastering, all by itself, is no guarantee of improved sound quality.

Asus, which set the netbooks market on fire with its Eee PCs, has some exciting new products coming up for release this year. Leaked slides of the company’s product roadmap for the U.S. show it is planning to introduce a new netbook with a 12-inch display and Nvidia’s Ion graphics chip and a tablet PC with multi-touch capability.
The new netbooks are expected to be priced from $300 to $500, says the Netbook News website.
Despite an overall slowdown in PC sales due to the weak economic environment, the netbook market has been going gangbusters. Sales of netbooks grew 40 percent in the second quarter, almost twice that of the growth rate of larger notebook PCs, says DisplaySearch, a research arm of the NPD Group.
Asus’ 1201N netbook is likely to have a 12-inch display, an Atom N270 processor, 2 GB RAM and 250 GB storage. It will also include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability and at $500 will be among the company’s premium products. The netbook is expected to be available in mid-October.
Around that time, Asus will also have a convertible tablet PC running Windows 7, says Netbook News. The $550 T91 convertible tablet is expected to come with a 32 GB solid state drive.

Apple has sent invitations to several journalists inviting them to an event in San Francisco on Sept. 9.
The invitation itself seems to confirm the rumors that the press conference will involve new iPods, as the tag line (“It’s only rock and roll, but we like it”) seems to imply nothing else. Remember, this has also been the subject of rumors for weeks now.
Officially, the event kicks off at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on September 9 at 10:00 AM.

The ASUS Eee Keyboard has been delayed a couple times since it first made our hearts race at CES, but it looks like those rumors of an October launch might actually come true: the new-age C64 has just arrived at the FCC for a little government work. Interestingly, the test reports indicate the presence of a UWB radio in addition WiFi and Bluetooth, so it looks like we’ll see the planned wireless HDMI model even after the spec pretty much hit the skids earlier this summer. We’ll see how it goes — and if we get that interesting Moblin version alongside the Windows edition when this thing eventually ships. Fingers crossed!

Nikon’s D300s has been filtering out to select retail locations for a few days now, and judging by the box that just arrived on our doorstep, we’d say Nikon (just barely) kept its promise of having these things out by the end of August. The semi-pro body is significantly more sturdy and somewhat heavier than our in-house D90, though the rear LCD sure looks awfully similar. We’re planning on giving the 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and 720p movie mode a go, but for now, feel free to peruse the gallery below to see exactly what a penny under $1,800 gets you in the DSLR world these days.
